How to get rid of tattered clothing Without using DFHack?
« on: March 19, 2020, 05:58:56 pm »

Since DFhack is still not stable for the 47.04 i would like to know if there is any other way to get rid of it.

Sell it, dump it into the magma pit.

I imagine if there were a better, automated method, the Dfhack people wouldn't have wasted their time making one.

If there is a way, it'll be in the quality setting in the stockpile (q). But I've a feeling it doesn't have a setting for worn items (hence the popularity of the Dfhack version).

There's no easy way, as far as I know. It's a lot of micromanagement. Selling it or dumping it is what most of us who play without DFHack do. If you produce enough clothes, your bins will fill with tattered clothing that is easy to sell/destroy.

XXclothingXX is considered to be refuse, and will be accepted by a Refuse/Items stockpile set to take armor/legwear/etc. I use a one-tile binned stockpile for this.

Have a clothing stockpile that only takes from the clothiers workshop. Any clothing stockpile that takes from everywhere can be considered trash.

Bumber's recommendation is the only vanilla procedure. You'll get some losses in that some unused clothes end up in the sale/dispose stockpile, but with a sufficient production that can be accepted. I don't know if there's a usable vanilla way to clean up the piles of clothes dorfs store in their rooms, though (a cabinet can be used to get them to hide the hoards).

I hope the stockpile UI/functionality rework that's may make it into the Premium release would allow for wear and size to be specified in stockpile settings (as in "I want to dispose of all troll and ogre size clothes, but keep underwear sizes that fit my fortress population, with their default quality non metal junk clothing disposed off as well").

I've heard putting linked-only (with no link) refuse stockpiles on the floor of the rooms will help the clothing decay quickly. Can't place stockpiles on the furniture, though.

There may be unintended consequences if dwarves are now storing other items in their rooms. Clothes that rot away shouldn't trigger masterwork defacement, but other items will.

There's probably an alternate method involving dropping controlled amounts of magma on a cabinet, but that involves a lot of setup.

I have an idea of enhancing Bumber's method. It is alike pouring out magma, when setting up magma workshops on surface.

1 stockpile to accept from links and linked to clothier- and leather-workshops.
1 stockpile to accept clothing from everywhere.
You need to make a 1 tile hole in floor.
Hole should have 1 tile refuse stockpile on its bottom.
Then the automation magic in form of stop dumping items on receiving into the hole.
Set H-route to grab all clothing from the stockpile that accepts from everywhere and voil'a!
Fully automated clothing disposal!

Enjoy!

PS. I sell my tattered clothing.
The XdressX and xdressx can sell for almost 1000, while the stone trinkets and crafts sell only for around 50-120.
This is because my clothing chain uses only died cloth and all my clothiers, dyers, weavers are legendary in skill.

Doesn't work, because owned clothes won't be hauled.

I keep one clear glass cabinet per room. With time (10 years) it fills up with tattered cloths?
So, I noticed Dwarves haul their tattered cloths back to clothing stockpile lately.
I guess, there is a limit how many tattered cloths a Dwarf can stash in one cabinet?

Else, it could be solved like with the missing bag/chest in a room.
Though you would need to mark those items on floor for dumping manually. Dumping on receiver stockpile of course.
Then unmark forbidden from it and watch minecart dump it automatically into refuse 1z level bellow.
