I’m just impressed that you’re reading 280+ pages and 450+ years of this world.

Ala only knows how many real world hours have been spent in Orid Xem but it’s been played nearly constantly for four years.

I think we deserve our place in the Hall of Legends!
This is the last great forum succession game.

Personally, I think the series peaked with The Museum II.

Ah yes, that was the one with the talking wagon.
Too bad it was completely unplayable due to crashes and lag towards the end.

Feel like the forums could make a comeback, but it would take intentional promoting of it.
Reddit is for news, memes and one shot stories
Steam is for game questions and posting screen shots memes and mods now
Discord is great for community stuff, but getting it widespread is the problem. Most people form micro-communities and so there isn't a central place for big succession games and stories

I think more people need to know this place exists, feel like they're missing out on some really epic games, and some more promoting of past legends!
I got into df at first from Sseth vid and then from reading hall of legends stories.
Played by myself for a long time because I felt insecure about my abilities, but deep down I was always drawn to the hub of all these epic stories. I think the DF youtube scene has a similar struggle and its most epic entries has always been when it tried to tell a story

Sorry, but I think it's market saturation. Anyone who knows about DF, knows about the forums and likes to play or just browse Legends Mode, is already in our community. I've said it on reddit, I'll say it here, getting into this game isn't about intelligence or some elitist wank, it's about commitment. I watched for days, weeks YouTube Let's Plays before I got into the game, and even then, I had to return to those videos to know what I'm getting into. There's also the fact that I wouldn't have gotten into the game at all if I were to use the default tileset, those tiles scare and annoy me. Maybe the Steam version helps with that, but I don't think it's by a margin.

That being said, I think there's room for good future community games. Hopefully Toady won't ever stop updating this game, and the fact that he's gathering a community of coders around him is a good sign for the future of the game.

As for the Museum II (Teyo Ametha), I always thought it was a world of potential, but Orid Xem has its charm in this quasi-post-apocalyptic setting we're playing in. While I regret I never got a turn in Museum I, it was very limited by the version that made it a near-dead world since World Activation. I'm probably subjective as I've playing in this world the most of the three, but I think Museum III is the pinnacle (at least so far).

I think that game developer forums in general, have decreased in popularity as many people just use reddit or discord and do not want to bother with a seperate account for each game they own. I agree with Maloy that the forums are better suited for succession games than steam etc, but new people need to be told about the forums. Most people will not actively seek for the bay12 forums and those that do are unlikely to find the interesting sub-forums, or they might just see the low posting rates and not bother.

Right now might not be a good time for advertising. the 504 errors make it all but impossible to load the forums. That needs to be fixed first

The first public alpha release of Dwarf Fortress wasn't even six years old when the first Museum game first started. Back then, long-running succession forts with a lot of participation were a lot more common. I think a lot of the diminished activity is due to that aforementioned first alpha build getting close to its twentieth anniversary. A lot of the old fans probably don't even play anymore and, if they do, are no longer interested in having their own version of Boatmurdered. The bulk of the new fans are probably coming in through Steam (people, amazingly enough, actually pay to play this game) without ever needing to visit the official Bay 12 Games website. Ultimately, I think the forum probably needs more than two or three succession games going at once in order to seem alive enough for a lot of people to bother.

In other news, I hope to have my turn's write-up finished sometime this week.

Once we start the museum IV game I will definitely make an effort to advertise it on steam. It would be good to have some new players. I guess that mentioning the achievements of the current game, (a world with close to a hundred player build fortresses and four and a half years of real world time of adventuring) might help people see what hidden potential this game has.

My hunch is that the future of gaming communities is apps with smooth real-time communication such as Discord, not forum boards. But i don't know. Even on Discord, it's not easy to run successions. I've been playing some succession forts in BlindIrl's discord - Bannerblunts, Fightquests and currently a wonderful fort called Dungeonrooms. But the amount of individual people who plays in our runs is around 10 people total per year, maybe?

Sorry, but I think it's market saturation. Anyone who knows about DF, knows about the forums and likes to play or just browse Legends Mode, is already in our community. I've said it on reddit, I'll say it here, getting into this game isn't about intelligence or some elitist wank, it's about commitment.

I'm not sure what market saturation here means, but I'm sure there's a lot of people who don't know of the forums, or they know but don't know how to join in or don't want to use the site. I only joined the forums to post about Bannerblunts, but then i took a leap of faith and decided i would join Maloy's succession. I had no idea if it would be fun but it turned out to be a good decision

Commitment is one way to look at it, for me it's making my own fun and finding meaning in something. For me the fun comes from succession games. I've been dreaming of a perfect solo run but haven't had much fun or success on that front.

I had a plan to go to the Kitfox Games discord and ask if they could have a Succession channel there, since it's bigger than BlindIrl's discord. But i haven't had the courage and don't know if anything would come of it. I should probably also make a thread here on the forum about Dungeonrooms to show what's going on there

I'm not even on the Kitfox discord. I'm only here and on the unofficial DF discord.

Oh, i never heard of the DF discord, what's this? Couldn't find a link while quickly looking on Google

I'm not even on the Kitfox discord. I'm only here and on the unofficial DF discord. I don't care for Kitfox's rules. I mean, god forbid we offend any real life elves. ::)

I don't like Discord at all, I don't even have an account with them. As for market saturation, maybe I'm using the term wrong, but what I mean is that, in my opinion, anyone who could/would have started playing the game, have done so. I also believe anyone who plays the game and goes to the reddit will make an account here too. If someone's not committed to make an account here, they weren't committed to play the game in the first place.

When I talk of commitment, I mean learning the game in the first place needs commitment. You need to put hours and weeks into learning the game and if that's not for you, no amount of badgering from friends will convince you otherwise. People who are into gatcha, shooters and other plug-and-play games will likely never commit to learning DF. That's the biggest hurdle and I don't think the Steam version will overly help with that.

As for my turn, I've had some downs and ups, thankfully in that order. Some crashes at the start before I realized that while I nominally fixed my computer, there's some video buffer problem or w/e which means if I have too many programs open (DF, Firefox, Opera etc.) the game will run fine, but will insta-crash when I save, so now I have to play with everything else closed. I found some weird things, including this, which I am calling "Trade Depot corpse pile-up" in which a BUNCH of undead AND thralls were in a neat Trade Depot/Kennel layout. I cleared the thralls the first time, but I ran into that save issue, and the second time I'm not sure I got them all. I decided that I was done and left for... other pastures.

I was exploring the west jungles, looking for some worthy prey (lots of boars and mountain goats, but nothing worth killing) until I found a fort (Palacework) with a nameless stray cave dragon. I was prepared to fight for my life, but by some miracle I two-shot it. I'm not sure if it's been done before, but my submission is now a dragon corpse (mutilated, unfortunately). I hauled it on the highest chamber of the Museum (the one below the roof).

I've been visiting around. For now, Northmanor impressed me as it's sitting on a literal mountain of gold. A very tall, very rich mountain of gold. And a lot of hard-worked steel is there. I was so tempted to take a bin of gold and/or steel, but I abstained myself. Livingstead (Livingdead?) is simply insanely built. I have no other words. I'm at Emeraldcrown now, the first time I visited it. I didn't know it was built around a volcano. There are some goblins there, I hope nobody minds if I massacre them. Then I'm going to Razorbridge and maybe that annex to Mabkor, I've been wanting to add a few gifts there for turns now. Is Razorbridge that co-op project Bralbaard and Maloy took on, if I remember correctly?

I still want to murderize things, but the jungles are empty. No trolls, no unicorns, nothing worthwhile.

There is a place where a bridge might be worthwhile, somewhere between Blueocean and the fortress to its east (and further east is the one on the northern island, I didn't visit that). I had to swim for a few minutes to get to the other side. To be fair, it could be bypassed in a longer route, I suppose.

Weird things I encountered were some player fortresses that were nearly empty or outright unbuilt. I don't know if it's the corruption or people staking claims on land and barely building anything on it (though again to be fair, I probably did the same in the Mine of Silver). Some of which had goblins, which I exterminated, of course. A hamlet had two dwarf settlers, and I suspect it was conquered. The trend of hillocks full of humans continues is more unassailable than your average dwarf fortress.

Any idea which sites? That kind of sounds alarming.

Razorbridge is indeed build by Maloy and me.

I'll keep an eye on that, but the problems were in the east, some of the forts neighboring Northmanor. I sent you a message related to that.

I do have another surprise related to in-game events unrelated to anything that's been discussed. In fact, I'm surprised it was me who made this discovery and capitalized on this, since I believe it's another positive aspect of the Anti-Rapture. Once more I bow to dikbutdagrate's brilliance and his intended and unintended consequences.

Speaking of, at least some of the goblins who returned in the Anti-Rapture have bodies now? I don't know what's that about, but more goblins to kill, so that's great for my character.

Does anyone know how to remove allegiances to groups/civilizations from creatures without killing them? That might prove really useful. Like say, I don't want Lurker to be a member of Omon Obin anymore (this is just an example, I don't plan to leave Lurker's allegiance from Omon Obin).

Not sure but I think retiring in another civ does that?

I'm pretty sure Avolition did the opposite of that, that's how he could remain Law-Giver and gain titles in other civilizations. I thought you only lost group allegiance once you move to another civ's territory, not the old civ allegiance too.
