[OOC] Here is the annoying part.

In fort mode before this turn, elves ambushed The Eternal Citadel. For some reason the elves declared war on Morul Kan some decades previously. Leading this ambush was none other than Yawo Rainstir the Bane of Meanness, an elven warrior and adventurer of the Museum (tonnot98). I captured him and placed him in a cage trap. The next part of my turn was going to be Kol rescuing this "general" for Queen Adela, but when I checked legends viewer, Yawo had teleported back to his forest retreat of Jawbride. I am not sure why this happened, but it ruined my story particularly as tonnot had mentioned he wanted a new turn to play as Yawo again...
It's been a while since I checked the thread, but it looks like Yawo decided to go on his own adventures WITHOUT me. At least he succeeded in his goals of reaching political importance, and is actively trying to revive Ribiromimi! It's a rather nice surprise, though I wonder where he is after the anti-rapture...

I wanted to see what would happen if I unretired Pis the charcoal brute who doesn't have a body

He gets reincarnated instantly into the body of a mountain gnome named Yifles and dreams of bringing lasting peace to the world

This could be a glitch of his character ID looking for a body, but I'm guessing one of the previous players decided to mess around with him lol
Yawo Rainstir butchered him after running into some necromancers. He didn't like the idea of a demon being raised from the dead, but looks like it happened anyway. If the other 'returned' don't have bodies, then it goes double for Pis.

All that being said, could I be added to the turn list again, Bralbaard? I'm thinking of bringing Yawo Rainstir back from his centuries of meditation.
Given his new-ish rank as a General or somesuch, I think I might try to hunt down those villains that terrorized Ribiromimi in the past and bring them to justice. If it's okay with the players behind those characters of course, like nogoodname's Arcturus, who seems to be in in a flux between being alive or dead. I might need to consult with one of you on how best to set up DF to actually play this venerable save these days...

Not sure if dying of old age is an honor or a shame for weaponmasters. On the one hand, it means they never got the opportunity to die in glorious battle. On the other hand, it means nothing could beat them in glorious battle.

A point I'm not sure you're aware of – most of the Returned don't appear in adventure mode. The few who do are those who were given bodies probably through DFHack f-ery by Dik. I am not sure if the characters given bodies in fortress mode keep their bodies in adventure mode.

That is to say, what you plan could still be doable, but you'd have to run through a lot of hoops to find ways to give these villains bodies so that your character may encounter and slay them in adventure mode.

I wish I knew how he gave certain ones their bodies back

I’d be willing to sit through the tedium needed to re-body the major characters we’re all interested in seeing return

My speculation is that he spawned a new character (I think there's a DFhack option), then gave them the old creature's ID. Or I think there's a DFHack option to spawn a clone with a different ID? I could be wrong though.

Remember that if you ever find the way, and resurrect an old human/dwarf/mortal, give it -1 death age, otherwise they'll just die of old age like the mortals did during the Anti-Rapture.

I get that, but outside of Oddom Girdergrove The Queen Bitch of Death, I was mostly considering other, usually immortal museum adventurers as villains. Which is why I mentioned asking for permission first. Honestly, I'm fully expecting to do a lot of set up just to die in the first ten rounds of fighting against any of those monstrous individuals. Besides that, Returned elves not being interactable suits my needs just fine. They're active off-screen (as if they're hiding more effectively from adventurers, they learned their lesson with Arcturus!) and it'll be harder for a player to fully genocide them outside of Fortress mode, probably.

Any tips on how to get LegendsViewer to work, Lurker? DF seems to crash whenever I export the XML file for the latest save, and whatever it creates can't be loaded by LegendsViewer Next. I've been trying to see the details on that military operation Yawo led.

My only tip is to reinstall your operating system or install a parallel one to the one you have. I had issue with LV myself and they were only resolved on a fresh operating system.

LV works for me just fine right now, except particular entries which crash it (Gods-sent immortality slabs etc).

It's definitely a glitch. Half the creatures returned in the Anti-Rapture that I tried to unretire throw me in a different body, sometimes directly into a literal unnamed hell demon. I'm 99% sure Yifles doesn't have the same ID as Pis. In my experience, it works with half of them (of course, my testing rate was of about maximum 10 of about 100,000 returned, so that statistics might not be representative of the actual odds), but we probably need more testing. I also suspect the time to posses bodiless Returned was directly after the Anti-Rapture and that things will go more wonky the more we retire forts and adventurers.
So I tried playing around with things, trying to bring back a human that was killed, then Returned in the anti-rapture, but then died of old age. I went into gm_edit and set his death year to -1, and then used full-heal -r to bring him back to life. The corpse disappeared with no sign of the guy I revived, but he was listed as 'alive' in Legends mode again. So I used unretire-anyone to try and possess him, but it sent me into some random farmer instead, unfortunately.

However, I learned that if you fast travel while "borrowing" a body in this way, the person doesn't actually travel. Instead, you possess some other random entity (any animal, person, or demon). You can't seem to be able to retire like this, but if you succumb to starvation or die in any way, the original Returned that you tried to revive doesn't "die" and they can be continually used to unretire and possess random creatures around the world. The main drawback is that if you're stuck underground or in hell (or teleport to Deephalls for some reason) then you'll have to pass two weeks to possess someone else.

Unless someone knows of a way to edit a specific hist_fig's body and teleport them without them being physically present, I don't think certain Returned can be made interactable again. But maybe this can be used for some weird astral-projection / wandering spirit playthrough? It'd certainly be a challenge to make it to Boltspumpkin like this. Dikbut, how did you even manage this mass-resurrection anyway??

Edit: Also worthy of note are that several adventurers, after having been dormant for centuries, are now in a state of Quantum Flux (as coined by Lurker). They are alive, but don't exist anywhere in the world until someone sees them by random happenstance, they are affected by a world-gen war, or they are unretired. This can be easily seen by going to the unretire screen of Ketas or Nom or anyone whose map screen doesn't appear immediately. Go in and out of their confirmation screens, and you'll see that the unretire location changes every time. So if someone wants to find them for whatever reason, they might have to unretire them first.

So what you’re telling me is dfhack needs a quick command that allows you to transfer unit IDs between entities?

Hold on, it needs to be distinct from body swap so people don't get confused. How about identity transfer?

Also to clarify your questions you asked in PM, my last adventurer was Zokun, and I gave up on writing the last chapter of his travels because it was more of a null-point. All I managed to do was retire him.
