Butchered an animal and was making crafts as usual, went to make a totem and well...

My guess is a procedurally generated musical instrument. I agree with making one to learn more.

You can check the craftsdwarf's workshop menu and can see the description of totmon.

You might need a special material to make the totmon. The totmon might need clay. The totmon might need cloth.

The totmon might need the distilled tear of a screaming demon.
