How do i get my hammereer to use a specific hammer?
« on: March 08, 2020, 02:41:34 pm »

I first must admit I have not done any experimenting yet. Then I must admit that this question has been asked enough times on this forum that I have probably missed the answer rather than it being a case of it never being answered.

But, as far as I can tell, the hammerer is a civilian position so will not use equipment assigned by the military screen and whenever the job is assigned (could be practically any time) goes to pick up the closest hammer not in use.

At the same time there are a lot of threads telling people to give him a candy hammer.

As far as I can tell, there are 2 options to ensure he uses the candy hammer, neither is good:
  • Make sure you never have any other hammers un-claimed and un-forbidden in the entire fort.
  • Restrict the hammerer to a smallish burrow separated from the main fort by a good distance then ensure the candy hammer stays in the burrow but no others enter.
The first is painful to the point of being impractical and the second does not actually sound reliable. What am I missing?

I don't have a lot of experience with dwarven justice, but perhaps you could make your hammerer part of a squad by themself and assign them the correct hammer through the military interface.

Apparently a hammerer in a squad will go fetch a different hammer to apply justice with, so that doesn't work (never knew that until someone mentioned it fairly recently, I always assumed he used his squad hammer).

will a hammerer use a hammer that's designated for melting?

if not, then maybe you could micromanage your hammer supply by:

a) as much as possible, only having high quality silver hammers that are directly assigned to individual military dwarves
b) have your wiffle bat, not assigned to anyone
c) every other metal hammer, designate it for melting

the other metal hammers will eventually be melted down, and in the meantime will hopefully be ignored by the hammerer.  since the remaining hammers are all military-owned, i think the hammerer's only remaining option is then the wiffle bat

if you need to outfit a new hammerdwarf squad, you could temporarily retire your hammerer, build a tonne of new metal hammers, assign the good ones, melt-designate the rest, and then bring the hammerer back to work

Assign the position to a handless dwarf so he can't use hammer.

Would a handless hammerer be any different from a hammerer with no chains? I want to get rid of the bad thoughts that dwarves keep getting from justice not being served. As I understand it:
  • A hammering being administered but ineffective gives hammerer, victim, and guilty party good thoughts. Guilty party also gets a bad thought.
  • A hammering being downgraded to a beating gives victims and hammerer bad thoughts, gives the captain of the guard good thoughts and gives the guilty party both.
  • No hammerer gives the victims bad thoughts and no thoughts for any body else.
  • An effective hammering gives victims and hammerers good thoughts; haulers, family members of the guilty party, and sometimes the hammerer horrified thoughts; and friends of the guilty party bad thoughts.

If all my data on that is correct, the ideal course of action is ineffective hammerings followed by no hammerer at all. But those victim bad thoughts start to add up once you have hundreds of crimes worthy of hammering reported and no hammerer.

Is my understanding wrong?

will a hammerer use a hammer that's designated for melting?

I have seen wood cutters claim axes designated for melting and miners claim picks designated for melting (when I use metal duping to train weaponsmiths I make both in workshops linked to auto-melt stockpiles), so I suspect the hammerer would claim a hammer designated for melting.

Good thought though. Similar to my first option, but if it worked would be considerably more manageable.

IME hammering only comes up as a punishment when the crime is failing a mandate. Tantruming gets imprisonment or being punched by captain of guard.

I read somewhere that handless hammerer still carries out the "hammering", except that he will BITE the "criminal".

Alright, just got 47.04 working finally, could not keep any of my 44.12 world's though for some reason. When my newest fort gets a bit more established I will attempt some carpendectomys.
