How to deal with those & that come with goblin sieges?
« on: March 03, 2020, 07:15:14 am »

All goblin sieges I had in my current fortress were accompanied by two or three &'s each. These guys seem to be much deadlier than the average forgotten beast. In my fortress, I lost the entire military against such foes twice. Any suggestions how to deal with those monsters?

Demons ought to be about as dangerous as FBs. I'd trap them in air locks (i.e. between drawbridges) using doors as bait/delaying tactics to lure them in and keep them in check until the bridges can be closed.
I'd then consider killing them with cave-ins, one at a time, or by unleashing them onto other invaders, with the hope they'll kill them. That requires getting invasions from multiple sources, though.
The other alternative is to turtle until they tire of making rude gestures and return home.

If they don't have any range attacks you might consider dusting off the marksdwarves, and have them engage the enemy from relative safety behind fortifications (ROOFED OVER!!!).

An advantage of demons over FBs is that demons tend to be of a few different (random) species, so with luck the same tactics can be applied to all of them (and with bad luck the buggers are flying web and fire spewers made out of a really hard material).

Ah, yes, repeating menacing spikes work on demons if you can get them to pace over the spikes, provided they're not made of a material that's as hard as or harder than the spikes, and provided the buggers don't melt the spikes.

I started marksman militia, lets see if they will be of any help. In all three sieges, the demons were of different type. Interestingly, the demons did not attack those visitors that are stuck swimming in a pond.

Demons are immune to traps in general but still respect gravity for falling onto spears if they can't fly, though because of their immense size bridges will often not work but can stop their movement. Pelting them with arrow bolts in a closed off gallery may work after all the surrounding troops have been killed capable of firing back, and killing enough troops to try and force a general retreat also so you dont have to fight the clowns at all.

Id recommend using siege engines ballistae and catapults if you do actively want to 'kill' them, to ideally utilize material harder and less likely to break upon the enemies they are being fired at. Or least recruiting weaponmasters to try and take on one at a time.

Yes, ballistae are a better alternative when the demons can perform ranged attacks, as you can place them out of range from the demons, while still being able to fire through fortifications (or at least I believe so: I think I've fired through fortifications from quite a distance, but I'm not sure).

Wait, you get goblin sieges ? Not only that, you get goblin sieges with the demon leaders of their civ ?

Demons are definitely more dangerous than forgotten beasts, although it depends of the randomization material and special attack. I think forgotten beasts have no inherent combat skills, although I'm not sure, while demons have at least Accomplished and Grand Master (!) for the humanoid ones.

Probably unintended though. Might want to add this as a bug, at least demons shouldn't come with goblin sieges before your fort is really mature, probably before the king comes.

Considering they're trapavoid I would just use some lever-pulled upright spikes. Since they're building destroyers, a bunch of upright spikes two tiles away from a high-quality, hard material door would damage them before they break through the door. I've had masterwork stone doors last quite a bit before breaking.

The new deep-disaster sites can be provoked into attacking, where demons will probably be in amongst the military to respond because they're seeded amongst the civ in finite amounts (but then again, whether cutting down some demons will make any difference to their site number, is a different kettle of fish).

Yeah, breached sites generally have 10-20, sometimes a lot more demons besides the big boss. Raid and piss them off and you better have a good defence plan ready.

--Edit
A quick check of an emerged civ from my current world and besides the Dark Pink Fiend who runs the place we have:
92 Spirits of Salt
91 Devils of Flame
74 Rove Beetle Fiends
60 Pig monsters
52 Black demons
50 Steam Haunts
And a mountain goat man.

Yeah, don't raid these guys.

I did not raid any goblin sites. In fact, the appeared in the first siege for the fortress, while I had not set up a military yet. They are called regular invaders on the unit screen, no special titles. I had three sieges with three different type of demon.

If you raid them, they'll come before you get 80 dwarves.
If you don't they won't come until you have 80 (plenty of time to get your defences up). That's all I meant.

Ignore the poster above who suggested it's a bug, it's not. Some goblin civs have a lot of demons as I pointed out. That's all it is. Completely expected behaviour. Your fortress is part of the ongoing demon/goblin invasion that 47.x introduced.
