No Civ, Yet Caravans & Migrants?
« on: February 29, 2020, 07:26:13 pm »

I've been through my c-Civ/World screen line by line, putting my cursor on literally every last square -- twice! -- and can find no trace of my civilization. I've used the h-holdings/tributes option, pulled up the legend, and still found no trace whatsoever. The whole SMALLER-sized world is just me, my 21 dwarves, 200 humans, and about 30,000 goblins. (That last one isn't an exaggeration.)

Yet I get migrants regularly, and I am currently hosting my second caravan. (I think that's right: year 251.) Where are they coming from? Should I expect the stream to dry up?

Any insight will be greatly appreciated. The answer is probably the first hit of the world's most obvious google search, but hey, I'm dumb. Thanks in advance!

Remnants of your civ may be living in caves. On default settings, caves are hidden on the map.

If there's population around anywhere they'll send merchants and migrants (these are very old features which don't need to respect infrastructure - to be replaced entirely one day).

Open your world in Legends Viewer or something similar to trace where your dwarves are hanging out.

Cool. I'm not crazy. I was guessing the migrants were coming from a diaspora; the caravans didn't mesh with my preconceived notions about dwarven refugees.

I hope they're not looking to me for salvation. I set my pop. cap to twenty-nine.

Not a truly dead civilization - which can happen even with zero living citizens. People like queens, outpost liaisons, etc. will either be created ex nihilo or taken from some performance troupe somewhere. Migrants also will generate from nowhere or be taken from non-major civ groups (bandit groups and the like) It happens and is some sort of bug.

That said, a truly dead civilization isn't actually that enjoyable to play as, so congrats!

Ironically, I had a fort with an active but small civ and got no migrants nor trade caravans. It was...interesting.
Thanks!
