Unusual neighbors list
« on: February 27, 2020, 03:11:43 pm »

Is it possible that the Neighbors list will show your relation with something near you with out showing the name or have I found a bug of sorts?

Any thoughts?

Is it possible to be a war with a vault or a kobold site?

And if so, if they haven't been discovered by the player do they not appear on the neighbors list?

If it's not a bug and it's not something that has to be discovered to reveal it's name, then I'm out of ideas.

Even if caves are revealed, Kobolds don't appear on the neighbors list, so it's not that.

Not showing a name with a pure vanilla game is certainly a bug. Any mods?

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Pure vanilla, only thing added is a texture pack.

That's probably the cause (for some weird reason). Swap to a curses set and see if it remains.

I think I may have stumbled upon the reason: I suspect it's a kobold civ that somehow has managed to both get in contact with your civ, is the closest kobold civ, and is close enough to be your neighbor.
The entity_raw for the SKULKING civ type has an empty string for its description, and it may be that they're actually always displayed, but typically have a blank description and a blank relation? Doesn't quite fit with the list being reshuffled based on proximity, though.
If you've still got the save and haven't embarked I'd suggest DFHacking the description to say something and see if it shows up when your pre embark is in that spot (or text edit the entity_defaults.txt file within the save).

Does someone know what I'd need to change in the entity_defaults.txt to populate the missing description mentioned? I'm not very familiar with using DFHack so with out step by step instructions I think editing the entity_defaults.txt would be easiest for me.

Before any of that, what happened when you changed your tileset? Did the glitch remain?

I'm also curious about that.

Looking at the file, it should be adding a [TRANSLATION:KOBOLD] tag after [CREATURE:KOBOLD], or fill something into the translation field of the entity_raw for kobolds.

It's not Kobolds. You can play the game with revealed caves and see exactly where the Kobolds are and they don't appear in the neighbours list.

I know they don't appear in the list normally. With access to the save (still pre embark) it ought to be possible to track down who the mystery neighbors are.

Removing the texture pack had no effect (The entry still shows [blank] -------)
Adding  [TRANSLATION:KOBOLD] under Skulking had no effect
Moved the save to vanilla version of the game with no texture packs and no DFhack, no effect.

I could host the save file if someone wants to have a look at it. Is there a good resource for that?
