Towers and default world gen settings
« on: February 27, 2020, 12:40:44 pm »

I remember in my previous games there might be a hand full of towers through out the entire world. Finding one was some times a chore and I rarely ever had to worry about starting near one.

I just spun up a new medium sized world with all the defaults and there are so many towers it's almost impossible to start a fortress anywhere that isn't near one. Is this some random chance that I've encountered or is this more common with the newest version of the game?

I've spun up another world and this one clearly as more towers than the one before it. Some of the possible locations to start my fortress have over 8 towers near them. Is there a way to limit how many towers pop up during world gen? I'm not fond of the idea of being sieged by undead in the first few months of the fortress's life.

Yes, the number of towers has increased significantly. You can reduce the number of secrets with advanced world gen parameters, thus reducing the number of necros that learn secrets firsthand. However, they can now reward underlings with secrets to a much greater extent than before.

Are those rewards you speak of primarily in adventure mode, fortress mode, or both?
Do you know what settings need to be modified to cause the change you're referring to?

Those rewards happen in world gen. So even if you limit it to one secret, there's still a chance for multiple towers, as necromancers will spread secrets to their apprentices.

The wiki has the information here.

Necromancers and their creations seem to be the new experience of DF, so I recommend learning to deal with them rather than avoiding it totally. Of course, 8 towers all around you is a nightmare no matter what.

The rewards happen during history. I don't know if they happen in the active world while playing in Fortress and Adventure mode, but unless you play a very long lived fortress it would have very little impact. Given that necros aren't supposed to live in player fortresses (currently bugged), the shouldn't be able to teach others in the fortress either (and I very much doubt the bugged ones do currently).

It's taught through books, so they can teach if they write/bring a book containing the secrets.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.
