Selling classic Boatmurdered version on Steam

Nostalgia is a powerful motivator, and people talk a lot about how they like the gameplay in the pre-3D version of Dwarf Fortress. I myself miss the flooding when you first breached the cave river and lava, the seasonal floods you had to rely on for your farms, cave crocs coming out of the well, and of course the famed raging elephants and killer carps. The simplicity of not having to deal with multiple z-layers was also pretty cool.

I think selling on Steam the classic DF version that was used for Boatmurdered, perhaps with a few quality of life features added (but not the full graphics treatment) and some bugfixes, would please a lot of people. Perhaps along with the Boatmurdered save and some other legendary playthrough saves?

Since the DF code has changed enormously since that version, perhaps this is even something that could be handed over by Toady to Kitfox programmers? I doubt there are many secrets worth keeping in that old version by now. Perhaps Toady might even feel comfortable with publicly releasing that old source code, ensuring the community can update it so it doesn't fall to tech decay.

You can always just download old versions. They're all on the site down to the original 2006 release.

Yup, I know that, thanks. The post is about selling a specific one on Steam, with some quality of life changes and bugfixes. And releasing the source code to that old version to the community at the same time if Toady doesn't feel it would be a threat to his livelihood. If it's not so secret anymore he can get outside help for this, which would leave him free to work on the release of the modern version.

You're suggesting to sell the old version, but also suggesting that the old version be open-source?

I wouldn't mean to come across as unruly in my response but i think Toady or least Kitfox would probably have good grounds to sue you for copyright, since he so generously only really mentions that his & threetoes acknowledgement should be mentioned for having made the game (i haven't read his full statement on the matter to be honest, that's as much as i memorized). Brazenly profiting off his old builds & work is a bit of a goblin-tier maneuver especially with the paid version coming out in-case you started under-cutting the main DF game.

Alternative genres or inspired-likes such as Rimworld healthily compete with DF (soon to be financially) without directly stepping on intellectual rights, since Toady has no control to 'patent' fortress or 'base building' games.

Well the op's idea was for Toady to give away his game to Kitfox who would spend resources on bug fixing and graphics implementation in order to compete with their own release of Dwarf Fortress. So no copyright issues.

Although, as you say, there are many site management games which do a far better job on expanding on 2D DF's concepts. And quite frankly I don't see the appeal at all. Toady sells an ancient concept that he's long outgrown, Kitfox, an Indie game maker, puts resources into brushing up bug-filled code of an incomplete 20-year old game instead of, you know, making games and supporting indie game makers.
