Also as long as the tests will not cause long term damage I do not see the issue.

Good to know also not to try and ascend anyone else!  I suppose your other allies will have to do that instead if you ever want to expand the number.

Gene-Wright Guild is a good start but we -you- can hammer out details later.  Consenting and fully informed test subject though would not be so much an issue.

In addition the particular work they are doing is very dangerous.  You should require inspection before a product is approved for release into the wild.  Not like every single item but anything new.

Restrictions could be relaxed once the plague is defeated in the local system.

Last requirement would be better care of Silas's health.  Working the man into the grave for short term gain is an inefficient use of valuable resources.  Remind him this is a marathon not a sprint.
