"William says we'll be ready to fly tomorrow." The Captain finally reveals, dipping you a nod as she returns from her conversation. "Without it hindering our continued operation."

It will be nice to see the actual conditions on the front for ourselves, even if we can only stay there for a day or so.

You exercise until Emma returns home. She yawns as she approaches, flopping on to you in an extreme display of exhaustion. After a brief kiss, the two of you get dinner in the compound cafeteria. "Three days, at a church in the Inner City. I also got you this-- don't open it all the way."

[SEED's Orders for the Execution of Crusader General Hardy]. You browse through the file, shocked and surprised-- apparently SEED really doesn't like being lied to. You hand it back to Emma, who grins at your reaction. "I get you the best gifts, don't I?"

You return the smile over your [beast of burden] stew, picking at the tender braised meat and winter vegetables, stewed in red wine and heaped over freshly cooked grainmeal. There's a touch too much salt for your liking, but its filling, and tastes slightly of smokey pine resin. You drain your glass of wine, setting it on the dish table in the cafeteria. You and Emma retire to your bedroom--

You awaken in the morning to Emma tossing your underlay at you. "Hey, come on sleepy head. You got a hovercraft to catch." You grumble, rising to shower, letting the warm water wash over your skin. You feel hesitant, concerned, but duty calls, and you dress. Emma, in a state of undress, helps you put your armor on, planting a kiss on your cheek before slipping your helmet on. "You better be careful, Phe-Phe."

You step into the hovercraft as it lifts off. The door shuts behind you and you take a seat across from the Warmachine Captain. "We're going to touch down a bit away from the front and march to it. You didn't specify what part of the front, so we're going to the closest section. We'll touch down there at the command station, march to the front. It'll probably take us about an hour after we land." You nod. "We've got a full squad here-- we couldn't take the bigger ship, though, and we still have to defend Emma and William."

An hour of peace follows, as you lounge in the smooth flying vehicle. It comes down to land in the center of the Command Camp for Region Three. Immediately, the sounds of artillery fill your ears, and you turn to the west as you step out of the craft, watching as fire blooms across a sinking quagmire of a wasteland. Las-blasts fill the air, visible in the fog and smoke that drift across the plains. You can see abominations in the distance, Insects supporting them, along with many more twisted forms you've never seen before -- but they're definitely less than an hour away. Wounded missing limbs are streaming from the front, cradling burnt stumps.

[20] An officer goes shock still when he sees you, dropping to his knees. "Lady Alphira. Our prayers are answered!" He begins to weep -- in relief when the squad of Warmachines form up on you. "Crusader Major Eric is holding the front while we retreat, we need all th-"

[1] An explosion wipes away a tent, nearby, and the officer is knocked over by the concussion as you and the Warmachines brace yourself against the blast...Bodies lie in the wreckage-- and the officer has a large chunk of metal sticking out of him that was not there before.

Amplify our voice.  "MEDICS!  I need medics over here!"

Try to stabilize the officer and the nearby men and women.  Inject the hopeless with sleeping medicine to ease their passing.

They glance your way, hesitating in the middle of stabilizing bleeding and injured, but they continue to pull the wounded away from the incoming mortar fire. They return to their task, ignoring those that are definitely dying in favor of saving who they can.

[10 vs 12] You're not going to have enough medicine-- you duck down as another shell from the Infected line whizzes overhead, exploding into the field behind you haphazardly. Another Infected shell blows away another tent in a sudden explosion of flame, wiping it away as you hesitate-- Crusaders scream as they die, choking on their blood. The Hovercrafts suddenly lift-off, your captain kneeling in to scream as the Warmachines hit the deck, "They cannot stay, otherwise we don't have a ride back! We need to do something Lady Pheobe! We're not fucking medics!" All around you the shells continue to rain down, as the Infected bombard the command center. The artillery in the distance gives retort in kind, flaming shells blowing through the enemy lines.

Wow... it's even worse than I thought it would be.  What can we do about this?

Uhh yeah. Bad.

Er, what's it take to recharge our shield belt?
Loud voice still: "Fall back. We'll figure out how to approach this mess once we're out of the line of fire."

My apologies. I'm an idiot. I will double-check those from now on. A twenty four hour period per one point of recharge.

[16 vs 16] The Warmachines begin to pull back, never completely turning their back to the front. They wrap you in a protective circle of bodies. A shell explodes nearby as you make your way out of the artillery strike, but the metal fragments bounce off the Thorton's armor. Eventually, you can tell that the shells are definitely landing behind you within the camp, as the Medics have set up a triage station a little further east. A few more make it out of the ruined camp behind you, pulling along the injured-- sometimes pulling along the dead as well.

The enemy's artillery is devastating.  Is there some way we can counteract that?

Would it be possible to fly above the range of the shells and get clear shots at the enemy artillery without extreme personal danger?

[20] Judging by the angles of the shells and their similarity to Crusader Artillery pieces, you believe that they would not be able to reach you at your average flying height. Not without them dropping shells on their own lines. However, as the infection does not value the individual lives of its soldiers, no doubt it would not hesitate if it calculated that such a tactic would increase its chances of success on this battlefield.

Unfortunately, nothing in battle is without extreme personal danger.
You shake your head, snapping out of your brief reverie -- you could almost see the firing lines, how to avoid all off the artillery fire that might be angled upward towards you at a moment's notice. The small arms fire is the real danger, especially with how flashy our wings are.

"I have minor damage to left side, Lady Alphira." One Warmachine dully reports, not sounding concerned. "It didn't penetrate armor." The other eight report similar conditions, sounding off one by one in muffled, stoic voices.

"What's the plan?" The Captain asks, squinting into the middle distance, where the lines of combatants meet in a bloody exchange of las-gun blasts and cutter blades.

Hmm.  The beetle wings would be much less flashy.

Is it a cloudy day?
