"...A couple guards, maybe, to keep watch at the compound. After tonight, I find I trust Thornton machinery rather more than Crusader infantry for such work."

why de we italicizing? It seems unnecessary to place emphasis on any words in particular

Just my attempt to put to text the vocal inflection natural to such speech. A stylistic choice, nothing more.

I do take inflection of words into account.

"I'll send a squad. Not these ones, however. They'll need down time." William pauses, "Give them an hour to get here, or a few if you're walking back to the compound first."

"I think I'd better take shelter here and wait for those guards to arrive. Thanks again, Billy.  You're literally a lifesaver. "

Heh, was wondering which is more dangerous: to wait here an hour and risk a followup attack, or to head back without escort and risk an attack that way?

That works tho.

[11] "I'll leave these ones here, for now. They'll head back when relieved." William explains, glancing out towards the street through the rubble of the collapsed storefront. "I doubt anyone will try anything, what with Xavier here. He dies and the Guardians..." William grins, explaining after you give him a confused look, "You should've seen it before he rose to power. Nights of blood. After he negotiated with the Families, the arrest rate soared and the number of bodies 'found' dropped. Guardians actually could have families to return to, instead of bloody rooms and rage."

"And yeah, I know it. Call me if you need anything." William flashes a smile, and walks out into the city streets alone, hunching down and slipping his hands into his coat. He passes out of vision without a glance back, and you and Emma wait alone. You and Emma sit, chat, and eat, and the bartender shows you his books. It doesn't make much in terms of profit, especially after his salary. He reckons the bar will make about [+.25 credits] in profit, per month.

Emma's radio emits a small chime, and she lifts it to her ear. She listens intently, quietly, then stows the radio, reporting in a cold monotone, despite the grin, "First target down. Iyal is alive. There wasn't collateral. Two lost on her side, but don't get choked up: investment recovered. Clean getaway."

[15] The Thornton reinforcements arrive, and the captain of that group dips a respectful nod to you and Emma, the only defining feature is the red band across the top of their helmet. The voice is feminine, however, "We're ready when you are." A frightened technician trails behind her, with Mitch's leash in her hand. Mitch doesn't seem to mind, dragging her to the drying puddle of blood to lap at it.

Our little assassin! I'm so proud.
...she better not get caught.

Grab Mitch, and let's head back to compound. We'll want to see to the burial proceedings of our slain guards once we arrive, and to find out who's taking over as captain.

You arrive to your compound before the corpses of your fallen guards, the trip into the Holy City passing uneventfully. The Guardians arrive with them thirty minutes later, and they are stored in the on-site morgue for further processing. They'll both receive the standard burial practices associated with Crusaders; including the duration of their contract being paid to their loved ones. With Sarah Potmend's death, no one is quite sure about who will inherit the position-- its been left up to the Council as headed by SEED, so far, so you are still at his mercy with that.

[-]The morale in your guard unit...is glum, to say the least. Two captains have died in the span of a month. Rumors and superstition will no doubt spread about the position.

[?] The second in command, now acting commander until such a time that the Council convenes and picks another, is one Jennifer Shatterly. You meet in the morgue, and she drops to a bow in front of you. "Mother--" She hesitates, glancing at Emma, "Mother Pheobe. Its an honor to meet you. I'm Jennifer Shatterly, Acting Captain of your personal guard." She glances at the corpse of Sarah, her wound stitched together, a pretty collar of fabric hiding the hole in her neck. "I didn't know Sarah well. She just transferred in, but its a shame to lose someone nonetheless."

Emma's radio chimes and she listens to it. "Earlier reports were wrong, Pheobe. One credit collateral."

Unfortunate but not unexpected.

"I'd say it's nice to meet you, captain, but under the circumstances I'm afraid that would be a lie.  Do you have any suggestions for improving morale and preventing further deaths in the personal guard?"

"Permission to speak freely, Mother Pheobe?"

"Granted."

[14] "This posting was...was considered baby-sitting duty. A lot of young Crusaders, fresh off the killing fields of whatever Outland war they were in, signed up because they thought no one would have bothered to try and kill you."Jennifer shrugs, picking at the edges of her helmet nervously. "They weren't expecting actual combat. Our faith will hold, as Crusader's faith has held many times before, but..." Once again she shrugs, "I don't think they were ready to go back to war with people so soon."

Jennifer sighs, "In my honest opinion? Replace them all with those more willing to accept a las-blast death. There's no shortage of vetrans itching to get off the front. To them, a las-blast in the neck is better than a scratch that turns you into a man-eating monster in your tent camp."

[20] With a glance toward's Sarah's corpse, she continues, "We're prettily heavily armored, for our posting, but I've been hearing word of even heavier armor being developed. Not Thornton cybernetics, but bulkier gear, designed for riots and the like. If you're in charge of SEED's military, you could try that." Without a trace of humor or irony, she continues, "It apparently comes with armored gorgets. Heavier assault rifles, maybe even specialized soldiers in squads."

"Thank you.  Emma, could you please see to replacing the personal guard's gear with the sort of riot equipment that the captain is describing?  I think we need our veterans on the front right now, considering the dire situation, but I will see if that is something we could look into when things improve."

"I can try, but I doubt I'll be successful until after the convention." Emma dips a nod to Jennifer, who rises to her feet and makes to leave you, providing you have no further orders.

What now? And what are your plans for tomorrow?
