"Officers in the field get radios, I'm assuming, as well? That only knocks down our required amount of radios to a couple thousand, plus the ones the command centers get." Emma scribbles a note down on her pad of paper, nodding to you. "Give me and William a day, we'll see how many radios we can make, and if its feasible for us to put together stations like that within the time we are given. SEED will have to assist, though, I'm sure."

"Anything else we need to handle?"

"I suppose we should coordinate the coup with the Pontifex, but that can come when we arrive at the Holy City.  If the plague can listen in to radio communications, we may need to use some sort of cipher."

"Can they even understand us?" Emma asks, looking confused. "I've never heard of a talking Infected."

She slowly rises, scratching Mitch behind the ears before extending a hand out to you, explaining as she does. "We also have the higher scholar tongues, which already work as a cipher, if the need arises."

Then, gently, "When do you want to head back to the Holy City, Pheobe?"

“I think the sooner the better, also before the big plague thing died, it told me it would be back, so they can talk, at least the big stationary ones”

Sigh. "Soon as we've got our tech situation figured out, I expect. They need help out there."

"Ah...that's...disconcerting. We'll use the highest level Scholar's speech we can, I suppose, and hope its enough. SEED will have to contribute some labor into developing a cypher." Emma gives a wince before offering a solution, helping you to you feet. Your stomach growls, and she keeps hold of your hand as she walks down the corridors. You follow-- its either that or be drug.

"I understand." She murmurs, looking back and giving you a weak smile. "Do you...you want me to take the field with you? I might be able to keep up now." Emma offers a giggle and a wink. She leads you down the hall, into the dining room, pulling out a chair that's out of the way for you.

You lift your brow when she promises she'll be back. It doesn't take her long to reappear, a serving girl behind her carrying platters of food for you; stew, bread, wine, baked apples, and a number small, cooked vegetable dishes. Emma doesn't sit, instead, she begins to walk away, waving at you. "We'll catch up later. I'll go get the ball rolling, and have our Warmachines ready to go by tomorrow."

last "I'm-happy-you're-alive" hug

We seriously lucked out with that transfusion. I was all ready to watch us descend into a raging grief-stricken mess and everything.

"Thanks, Emma.  I'm glad you're feeling well."

Eat.

I was expecting the worst as well, but was pleasantly surprised.

The luck of the roll shined upon you-- the 19 happened, and immediately after was a 1. So close to killing Emma.

"Wait." Emma pauses as you approach, looking back with confusion until you sweep her up into a tight embrace and a loving kiss. Surprised, at first, she melts into you. She blinks, smiling with clouded eyes. "Thanks Emma. I'm glad you're feeling well."

"Mhmm." Is all she musters, shaking her head clear as she walks away. Mitch, stays close by-- hopping up on a chair to start eating a roasted rabbit from the tray. You decide to join him-- he growls when you approach your food, however.

Hm. Mitch. How on earth are we going to train this thing?

idea.

See if we can't use our will to placate the varmint while we're at it. Charming animals can't be all that different from charming people, right?

[11] You approach a growling barker. Many Outlanders would have called you a fool. However, you maintain eye contact with him, even as he crunches through the bones of the rabbit, swallowing it down in a few, quick chomps. When you're close, almost close enough to touch him-- he twists to bite you, a serious bite, no playful nip.

[3 vs 6] [16] He bites you hard on the hand. But your will swells forth, as you stare into his eyes. His teeth let go, and he slinks back, pacing away. The wound was deep, three rings of bleeding bite marks. You're pretty sure he wasn't trying to bite too hard, or you'd be missing a hand.

[20] You heal as you eat, Mitch keeping a distance away from you, prowling on the edge of your willpower.

Nice, that will thing is handy.

Let's try going for a run with Mitch next and see if he can keep up.

Oh.
You named this thing after the doctor.
Why do I only now realize this?  :P
