"Father?"

"Promise me, Alphira. It weakens us, this division. It gives rise to abominations, to twisted beasts shaped like us with the minds of many. It is an...unclean act. It's inhuman for us to to give life this way, to put them beneath us by virtue of the essence, to write ourselves into their will."

"Do you regret making me, Father?"

"I regret nothing, Alphira."

...

Good thing we're already an oath breaker, eh?

You awaken in your compound's hospital, the familiar pale green tiled walls filling you with a sense of comfort. Emma lays sleeping beside you, eyes puffy. Hair greasy and unwashed...she shifts in her sleep. You take stock of yourself. You're swaddled in bandages, all of them bloody. You flex your left hand-- and find it missing. You're in pain, you know, but your conscious mind does not feel it. Your headaches and throbs, and you feel a great hunger.

I think we may have just made an Empyreal of William.  :o

Y'know what? Let's let Emma sleep in a bit-- she probably needs it right now anyway.
Can we move our other arm, or is it strapped down by bandages and whatnot?
Is Lucille still with us?

I’m sure it’ll be fine, he would still have his mind, right? I’m sure he would rather not be dead

Oh, he's gonna be pleased as punch. The ramifications for us are... unsettling.

”Can I have some nutrient cubes from my pack, or was it destroyed in the battle?”

I imagine we'll eat soon as somebody realizes we're conscious. These people oughta know how we work now.

Your other arm is quite free, besides for Emma. As for Lucille, you do not see her, and feel faintly uncomfortable with that. At least, you grin to yourself, there isn't a turret in here anymore. You do, however, lift your free hand, waving it at the camera. It takes a few minutes, but eventually the door slides open, and a medic pushes in a cart. He smiles at you, gesturing to the...nutrient paste, like its a buffet prepared by a gourmet, all elaborate flourishes and smiles. You slowly disentangle yourself from Emma, leaning forward and eating with the hand you still have.

You put down four bowls before you feel full, and the medic checks your vital signs, noting them down and as he leaves, comparing them to your baseline. A clever little invention by Silas, the measurements taken over a week of calm for future medical emergencies like this. Zachary steps into the room, gesturing to a seat beside the door away from the sleeping Emma.

"Mother Alphira. I'm glad to see you awake." He does look happy, to his credit, but there's a vague uncertainty about him, "I'm glad you answered our prayers, especially after news from the battlefield reached us."

Finally he breathes a sigh, "I've never been good with delivering bad news, Mother Alphira, and I hate to have to start getting good at it. Rodstadt fell after they evacuated you. I'm told your battalions were all destroyed, with half of the Thornton Mercs and only a few others as survivors. Major Anderson, Gem Thornton, and the other officers all fell in the retreat. The encirclement under Maxwell later reclaimed the city, and purged it of the Infection."

...you have the oddest feeling you should do that in private if its anything like all the other times. It will be painful, violent, and probably not very pretty to watch. But you can continue if you would like.

"He...seems perfectly fine. A miraculous recovery. He's at the range, right now actually. I think he got tired of waiting for you to wake up-- he and Emma stayed beside your bed for a long time. I guess he got bored."
