Good grief.

"Take what supplies you can use from the dead. We will avenge their sacrifice."
[I don't trust my senses just now. Cover for me.]

Grab a stray assault rifle, for burning-- or even that Inferno shotgun the merc had, if we think we can heft it. We make for the church.

Try using earth manipulation to stop a charge if they shrug off the overload.

You snatch up one of the bulky, overloaded inferno-shotguns, and you can indeed carry it with both hands, something that William laughs at. "SEED, you're strong. Remind me to arm-wrestle you in full kit later!" His mirth spreads through his soldiers, but your rank and file continue to look grim. They seem surprised...maybe even a little concerned about William's cackling. He slips his helmet on after giving you a wink.

You feel good, elated, and return the wink.

Then you march on, and your men follow, William abreast of you, his smile hidden beneath steel and a bloody-flecked crest of white. Those heartbeats in the ruins drift away towards the center of town as you approach. There's a crunch beside you, and two more insects shatter down the concrete walls on either side of the Thornton Mercs, once again taking you by surprise.

[7 vs. 14] And while the tactic doesn't surprise the Mercs, the bugs still gain the upperhand in the resultant charge, neatly goring another merc, who, despite the horn ripping straight through his armored torso, drops his gun and pulls his cutter from his kit. He dies, and the bug flings him from it's central horn.

[18+1 vs 18+1] The Mercs and the two Insects exchange blows, the mercs dodging a blow and dealing them in turn, but they're evenly matched, until one more of the Mercs collapses from his a gaping chest wound. With his dying breath, he lurches forward like a man possessed, wrapping his massive metals arms around the beast. The two other mercs with him hack and slash indiscriminately, killing both man and bug.

In front of you, a mass of abominations emerge from the darkness of the ruins, and their las-guns begin to pulse, denting the armor of the mercs-- and you realize your soldier's lines of fire are blocked.

[18] With a twist of your hand, you bring up the hydrogen in the air, and shoot it forward, lighting it at the same time. It explodes in the ranks of the abominations, but they continue to lay into the mercs, who are now turning to return fire with-- "GET OUT OF THE BLOODY WAY!" Anderson orders, screaming for you to hear. His troops are lined up in neat ranks behind whatever cover they can find, las-rifles trained on the abominations in front of you.

[10+1 vs 10] [18]William moves his prodigious mass, body slamming the bug back into the rubble from where it came, and it scrabbles for purchase on his armor. William's shotgun blows steaming chunks away from its core. The mercs all dive for cover. You wisely, do the same--

[3 vs 11] The resulting firefight is fierce, and many of your men are shot down in the resulting exchange of las-fire. Those heartbeats in the ruins draw closer to your position.

[18+2] You reach out with your willpower, and pull the buildings down around your men, crushing those heartbeats that stealthily inch closer. Dust flies up, obscuring your view.

[13 vs 2] The firefight continues unhindered, medics pulling away the injured, and treating them the best they can as pulses of heat burn overhead. Many of the abominations have fallen, laying limply in the street like dolls with their strings cut.

[18 vs 16] It isn't long before the mercs begin to shoot into the crowd of abominations, las-rifles flashing out. A screech goes up, and the las-gun abominations flee deeper into the city, probably to fortify the plaza.

You rise, breathing hard as hunger pains make your stomach ache. William emerges, his armor intact and he approaches the downed Thorntons to grant them quick deaths.

"Two more done."

"Fifteen killed, twenty injured, Mother Alphira." Anderson reports the casualties, voice muffled behind his gas-mask.

[That leaves you with fourteen Thorntons, and three hundred and fifteen troops, sixty of which are injured.]

Your men regroup, and you press forward, eating as you do, quickly choking down more of the nutrient cubes. You're approaching the plaza, and you don't need your helmet's sensors to tell that hell awaits you there.

We're taking severe losses.  The flanks are probably doing even worse.  Do we need to change tactics?

Hold up, the Inferno shotgun's... an actual shotgun. We can't Overload that.  ::)

Yeahhh. I'm trying to think how I want to deal with this.

Would it be possible to project a torus of earth manipulation around the soldiers to prevent the bugs from getting close?

sounds like a good idea
Also can we set fire to the bullets as they leave the gun?

Right. Options.

- We could press on as we've been doing, maybe with a bit of earth manipulation worked in. This is probably gonna get us killed.
- We could attempt to Overload a Thornton fusion rifle into town square, and work from there. This has a decent chance of getting us killed.
- We could... ask Alphira to take over. I have no idea if this would get us killed. (It'd be kind of embarrassing tho.)
- We could retreat. Regroup at the bridges. Call in outside help. This would still be dangerous, and would lose us a lot of face.

Thoughts?

I don't think we should retreat.  One other option would be to ask the suit for tactical advice.

[Lucile, what tactics would you recommend for this situation?]

[1] [This unit is not equipped for that function. Fight until the day is done.]

You briefly contemplating lighting the fragments of metal aflame with hydrogen fire as they leave your shotgun, but you realize that as soon as they hit the air, they already catch fire.

Do you wish to ask Alphira for advice?

We're making progress.  The fighting is brutal, but we're pushing forward, and we might have the chance to wrap around and support the flanks.

Make more aggressive use of our powers.  Use small, focused overloads against single large enemies, like the insects, and use wide flames to attack masses of enemies.  Try projecting a torus of earth manipulation around the soliders to prevent the burrowing ambushes.  Keep pushing.

Ask Alphira for advice.

You come to a stop, and your men slow as well. Alphira, what should I do? You feel almost humiliated asking for help, and have to bite down on your pride.

[17] If I help you with this, we kill those fussy old bastards, those so-called generals, who put us into a trap as bait. -We- do not meekly bow to this aging institution of war. It serves -us-. Alphira's anger boils beneath the surface, suddenly bright and hot.

We're going to kill SEED, Alphira. The generals of this land can join our vengeance or perish.
