Relax! Socialize. Enjoy the evening. Try not to get too drunk.
Consider at some point: have we done something to make an enemy of Eric?

<Eric associates Phoebe with Mother Nicole, who seems to have a polarizing reputation. He’s also got that competitive ”I’m better than you!” personality>

Yeah, that's quite likely all this is-- still, I'd like to check we haven't done something out-of-the-ordinary to offend him. It's been a year, after all!

[-] You do believe that he was upset with you for not condemning your grandmother for firebombing towns with civilians still within, to stop the spread of the Infection. He stopped talking to you after that. You also realize, after a slow draw from your beer, that if it weren't for you, he'd be the most physically fit person in the class. During the 'test of will,' an exercise wherein a heavy weight-bar is placed on your shoulders, you lasted a full five minutes longer than him...while staring him down. He was smirking at you when you both started in your defense.

[10] The rest of your time passes pretty uneventfully. You have a few beers, another glass of Emma's wine, and a shot some random classmate bought you. Mcgee, then James challenges you to an arm-wrestle, which you soundly beat both of them, while Emma drunkenly referees. You never get more than tipsy-- you probably have to drink a lot more to get drunk. Emma is another story; she's hunched over the bar, near the end, and, piteously asks you to take her home. Several of your friends snigger. They go quiet when you glance at them.

[14] You rise, hauling Emma up with you. She brings her nearly empty bottle of wine, letting it hang from her fingers as you maneuver her out the door. That extra muscle you've gained helps considerably, as does Emma's thin frame. She stumbles along as you drag her, and you give a final glance back to your friends. None of them elected to accompany you, and you notice bills passed around.

You step out into the cold night air, Into a deserted town in the early midnight hours.

[1][12][11][11] Too empty. Something pricks at your senses, and you take in your surroundings as you walk down the paved path out of the city. You don't stop moving, though. You confirm your suspicions in moments—fIve people sulk in one of the alley-ways between a gunshop and a pawnbroker, on the way out of town. You feel the faint hum of pistol reactors from them.

Take cover behind a nearby building out of line of sight, quickly if they start to move, but otherwise at a normal pace.  Determine whether flanking them or getting on a roof is an option.

Also, are any nearby buildings likely to be unlocked?

[20]You slip into an empty building left unlocked, Emma in tow, and your would-be ambushers are none the wiser for it. You're sure they haven't noticed you yet. Emma mumbles something incoherent, looking more surprised than concerned. "What's goin' on? She manages to slur out with great effort. You settle her down in a corner, freeing yourself up.

[5]They're on the move now. The hum of their pistols prickling at your senses as they make their way towards your location.

Speak low. "Trouble. Stay quiet."

Draw our pistol. Keep to the darkness of our corner; stay still, silent, and low to the ground. Should our would-be assailants enter the building, overcharge our weapon and incinerate them.

Ambush and shoot normally, aiming for the center of mass
<Using Overload would blow our cover and reveal ourself as a supernatural being. It'll draw way too much attention. It'll also destroy our weapon.>

I agree that we should avoid the overload, at least initially.  But I do think we should only attack if they enter the building.

Also, if possible without making too much noise, lock the door(s).
