Wait, uh, is this saying these abominations are Crusaders distorted by some psychotic episode?

What is blue on blue?

It's all just a hallucination.  Psychosis.  Blue on blue means friendly fire.

[6] Blue on blue. Friendly fire! You giggle, letting the blue, barely visible flame dance in your hand as you curl up against the heavy comfort that the capelet provides you. It still smells of Emma's perfume -- warm and sweet. Your giggles turn to wretched sobs as you contemplate what you might have done if you had chosen fight instead of flight. The Crusaders below call your name, but you do not respond.

[1] Black ichor starts to drip from the sky again as your skin twists and itches. You shut your eyes tight against the tentacled horrors that claw their way up from the ground below.

[Shall I administer more sedatives, Ancestors?]

Not yet.

Phoebe, take a deep breath, keep your eyes closed, and count to ten.  Everything is fine here.  There are no enemies.  Relax and let yourself become still.  Stay here for a bit.

Kings and soldiers-- warriors and gods. What good are we now?

If we just knock her out, she won't be able to respond to actual threats.  We should just try to talk her down right now.  Also, for the record, don't fire lasers next to explosives.

[8][18] you take deep ragged gasps of breath. The feeling of wriggling moisture on your skin slowly fades. You don't dare to open your eyes -- but something heavy covers you against the ash and snow. A las-gun is nearby, you note -- and when the adrenaline slowly fades, you can hear someone breathing through their mask.

[15] "Focus on the here and now, Mother Pheonix. You're safe. You're sane. S- Pheonix protects--" Someone nudges you with a booted foot, and for a second you almost want to break the offending leg-- instead, you comply. "You're safe. You're sane. The Pheonix will protect. The Crusaders will protect. Warm tents. Fresh food. Bravery, strength, sacrifice."

You start at a low whisper, focusing on the words as you lie beneath the padded, very heavy robe. You open your eyes slowly, fearfully, and the sky has returned to the gray overcast.

"It hit you hard -- I didn't know...well...angels suffered from it the same, Mother Pheonix..." Its a young man on the other side of the mask, youthful masculinity hiding fear. Hiding concern.

Do we say anything? If so, what? Apologize for our lack of orecautions?

"The plague touches everything... but together we can overcome it.  Thank you for your comfort.  Let's get back to work."

Maybe this?

Stable. Safe. Φοίβη. Our Φοίβη. Bright moonlight. Φοῖνιξ now. Blood red.
I worry so. What can a dust elder do, but worry?

We should not imply we are infected.  They likely don't understand physical immunity, make sure they understand it is mental.

I should note there are many effective therapies for these kind of things and have seen them used.  This should be a priority, as you are in NO shape to be fighting at this point.  And without you, there is no hope.

...well my advice was useful. That.... that was close.

My youth suggests I leave plans of action to the more experienced advisors... but though action is fitting to the Line, it seems quieter plans have their place as well.

You kept us from-- from a terrible deed. Thank you.

...

I've little stomach for them at the moment... but in truth, we have need of words. The Crusader is concerned.

"Not quite the same... but I pay my price." Sit up, if we can. "I sacrificed more than an arm, against the Leviathan. Its memory is a wound on my mind."

Well that could have gone really poorly, good thing we've got some quick thinkers on our side.

+1 This sounds like the thing to say.
