["Good boy. Let's go for a run tomorrow. You'll like it, these mountains are beautiful."] You murmur. Mitch yawns in reply, returning to his bedding and settling in. You give him a final pet, slipping past his nip in response, grinning to yourself.  He's grown over the last couple of months, coming up to your knee now. His baby fat is already giving way to muscle, and his soft fur is becoming more and more bristly. It's turning from sandy white and brown to a more grayish red.

We're going to have to get him a chew toy. Or a bar of iron smothered in grease.

He's growing into quite the little hellhound. We should go for steel instead. Our Mitch deserves only the best.

I'll file the requistion.

Unsatisfied, you rise to your feet, pacing around the telescope in the center of the room. An hour passes as you compose your speech internally, practicing various gestures and movements as you do. The Pontifex's teachings come in handy, but you're limited by your lack of an arm. You'll have to 'borrow' a half-cloak from somewhere to cover it up, and instead work on the choreography of your speech with just one. A broad, sweeping gesture.

A gentle chime sounds at the main doors, and you approach, opening them with a flick of the card.

Iyal stands on the other side. She bows her head respectfully. "I wish to speak with you, Lady Pheobe."

"Uh, yes. Come in." You're already put off balance by the time she enters, and the two of you find a sitting room. She sits upon the floor, setting her palms on her knees and bowing her head.

"I would like to ask you a question."

"Okay..?"

"Why are you doing this?"

"I'm--I'm sorry?"

"Defending these people. Why do you care, when you're so much stronger than they are?" Her words catch you off guard, and you shift in your seat. "As an angel such as yourself, surely there's something that awaits you besides this world?"

“This is my home, too. These people are friends. This planet must not fall to the [plague]. Why should I let an entire planet die? The [plague] must be stopped. Losing this planet to it will make it stronger. If we destroy the [plague] here, we will be safe, and,,,”

"If we try to cultivate certain virtues within us, we will lead a fuller and more satisying life. In contrast, if we act callously and care only about self-advantage, we will invite suffering into our being. I think it's important to ask ourselves what kind of person we would like to be, individually and in respect to the communities we belong to, and attempt to act accordingly."

Perhaps this as well?

[-] Iyal gives a small nod in response to your statement. "Will trying to live a good life like that alleviate past wrongs, you believe? Allow you to find atonement for the wrongs you have committed in past lives?"

"Nothing can alleviate or nullify the wrongs that we have already committed, but at least by improving our character we can make conscious efforts towards ensuring that those wrongs will not be repeated. The past cannot be changed, but the future holds infinite possibilities."

"...No. I am corrupt. Prone to outbursts of anger and bloodlust." You answer, honestly, glancing at her. "I've let myself be used as a weapon of war and bloodshed."

[17 vs 13+4] Iyal nods, and you hear the main door open in the distance as someone rushes into the level. You hear your name being called--

"[You are no longer Alphira Sol. That I can see.]" Iyal speaks calmly, gently, in perfect Empyreal.

[4 vs 20+1] You cough, tasting blood. You should have been faster, but you've realized it a little too late. Your heart misses a beat as something tightens around it.

Iyal sits patiently, a sharp black spike jutting from her arm, impaling your abdomen. "[Call them off, or I'll rip your heart out. Then kill them.]"

"Don't come in." You yell back, obediently, breathing hard.

I suppose the fact that she switched to a conventional firearm should have been a clue.

"Who sent you?  Was it the navy, the usurpers?"
