There are several designs for napalm within the database, all of which could probably be made relatively inexpensively. There are at least four hovercraft designs. One is a smaller, combat orientated vehicle, with an internal capacity at roughly [two thousand pounds], and an external of [seven thousand pounds], however, it's not quite comfortable for more than a single squad of ten to occupy. The second is a passenger style craft, designed for ferrying troops, with a capacity at roughly [eleven thousand pounds], or around fifty full kit troops. The third is a massive, slow-moving hovercraft, with a capacity of [six thousand tons]. Its primary use is the transport of freight. SEED, in its evacuation plans, pulled out reserve hovercrafts that were even larger, with capacities of [one hundred thousand tons] and up. These move at a snail's pace and are energy-guzzling beasts.

Bombing runs have been a useful tool in dealing with feral strains of [The Plague], but the current strain tends to shoot down and 'recycle' hovercrafts, turning them into infected monsters.

"A mixture of all or none. I have not run recon on those sites. District Number Nine will follow you -- the Thorntons are a menace if they do not." Zero informs you. "When the Military is reorganized, I would recommend taking that action."

You frown at him but turn and leave, not bothering to exchange pleasantries as he begins to work at the assignment you have given him. Down the dull hallways you walk in silence, Emma clinging to your arm. You step into one of the empty office spaces, taking a seat on one of the desks, and you explain your speech to her. Or, at least, the vague idea that you were given for a speech.

[12] And you show her the symbol you want her to spread, conjuring it from hydrogen flame in the air between you. The room heats up rapidly, but neither of you pay it any mind. Emma dips a nod, lounging in her seat. "Your speech has a good basis. The Symbol -- it works...and it's simple. Its something that an artist can elevate to detailed heights or a child could dawdle on their notebooks. You can make it into a necklace or paint it on a wall."

Emma picks at the edge of her coat with small frown. "I will also line up a project for any artisan that survived to begin beautifying our spaces with our religious iconography. Good scenes -- but ones that do not call to mind the Holy City. Cheaply made. However, if we intend to live here forever, these people are going to need something more than pretty pictures-- they're going to need luxuries. Wall hangings, tapestries, or hells, we could just use the Eastern style and start decorating everything with loosely draped linens." She pauses, "We're also going to need actual plants to make this space livable. Greenery, flowers, ivy, whatever. Actual food too, if those nutrient cubes are as bad as you say, even if just as a reward."

I hope I've not misrepresented the humble nutrient cube.

"They're... edible... better with something to wash it down. Still bland."

"Could we set up personal vegetable gardens for people down here? We've space to spare in the living quarters, for time being... folks would have some greenery to tend, and a steady trickle of fresh edibles."

"That's a good start." Emma nods. "Seeds are going to get real valuable soon, as are fresh vegetables. It'll supplement their diets. We're also going to have people start sending requests to come live here-- luckily, they won't be able to just wander in, or else we'll be flooded...but maybe we should be." Emma pauses, breathing out a sigh.

"I want to bring the entire Thornton Group here." She announces, suddenly. "All of them."

You blink, shifting slightly, uncomfortable at the hint of favoritism she's suggesting.

"Things are going to get bad out there, Phebe. I can't abandon my people -- I'm sure William feels the same way. We need scientists, and farmers, and laborers, and artisans. And hey, if they don't have to worry about winter supplies, maybe we can use our seed stock to produce some food. Maybe bring some animals, too, to raise, if the Fortress has the ability. It wouldn't be much, but its a start."

Her people are our people, and they are highly skilled. I think we should take them in.

The precedent is dangerous. How far will we go, to elevate this one Family above all SEED's people?
Still... I do not see how we can deny. We need the Thorntons by our side, now more than ever.

"Your people." Sigh, smile. "Our people, then. How many?"

"One thousand and five hundred or so, as of the last SEED census." Emma provides, giving you a weak and hopeful smile. "Not too many -- and two hundred of those are trained chemists, in some way. The Warmachines will worry about their families less now, too."

I was worried it would be more, the more people we have, the more food and water it will take to sustain everyone. Chemists, farmers, and scientists of other disciplines will be helpful, as will laborers and mechanics

Only that! A request easily granted.

Emma gives you a big smile, sitting up to provide you with a hug and a firm shake of her head. "No, we can handle it. Thank you, Phebe." She kisses you, and the two of you turn to leave. You head back to the hangar, to your private room aboard one of the vessels -- only to find said vessel missing. A null nearby approaches you with a precise bow of his head.

"Where's our room -- and our stuff?" You ask, bluntly, agitation creeping into your voice.

"Forgive this one." The Child of SEED dips his head in a bow, "But we had to use the vessel to transport refugees. Your personal property is on Level Zero." He extends out a set of keycards. "It was originally to be the observatory, but we've turned it into your private quarters."

You lift your brow, taking the keycard offered. Emma takes the other, looking just as confused as you.

Getting into the elevator, you glance over the document describing the Fortress. Level Zero is indeed an observatory. However, SEED deemed it ineffective, as well as a security hazard. As such, it sealed it off to the general public. The Level is far smaller than the others, only ten thousand square feet, divided into many empty rooms, some of which contain modern bathrooms.

The elevator hisses to a stop, and you slot your keycard into the reader. It gives a pleasant beep.

The central room has a massive telescope apparatus with a computer interface. The surrounding rooms have glass ceilings, designed to be covered with heavy steel and concrete plates with just a few presses of a centralized display. Optional timers are built-in to the display. Your bed and desk are located in a room with a view overlooking the snow-capped rim mountains to the west. A bathroom is just a few steps away, and the Children of SEED have provided you with a crude steel wardrobe filled with uniforms. A computer, one of those briefcase affairs, sits on your desk nearby.

You fall into bed with a sigh, stretching out your limbs as Emma looks out over the star-lit mountains.

This is a bribe, I think. Those corpses are wanting to ensure their survival by making us happy.

Emma gives you a kiss, shaking her head softly, and leaves you alone in your new room.

[17] Ha-ha. No, something bes--Mitch! You bolt out of bed, rushing down the hallways to the elevator. The null is still in the landing pad, directing traffic and the stream of refugees.

"Where's my dog?" You ask, and the null, for the first time, looks confused.

"Dog?"

"Barker. Hound. Whatever the word for it is! The big bitey puppy thing."

"One of the Warmachines had to escort it to level zero for us, as it tried to bite every other handler..." The null pauses, adding on, "It bit the Warmachine as well, as fact, but I'm sure those ruptures in the armor can be repaired."

You leave, returning to your level, and searching through it. Mitch, you come to find out, is lying in one of the empty rooms, on a pile of shredded uniforms. He's asleep, his thick chain in his mouth midchew. You return to your bed with a puff of exasperation.

Go back to Mitch. "You shouldn't be tied up, Mitch. Let me remove that chain, but please try not to bite people, okay?"

Mitch wasn't really tied up -- the chain is the only type of leash that you don't have to replace daily. Only monthly, but you wander back to him and unhook it regardless. Mitch starts awake, his slavering jaws snapping down on it. He pulls it back from you, and the two of you struggle against one another in an impromptu tug of war. Despite his small size and youth, he gives you a good run for your money. At the end of it, he spits out one of his broken teeth, panting happily as you hang the chain up out of reach.

You pet him after he gives you an 'affectionate' nip of your hand.

"[Try not to bite people, okay]?"

[14] He growls in response, nuzzling at your hand.
