the next Big Wait?
« on: February 08, 2020, 01:13:28 pm »

will there be some sort of announcement that the Big Wait has begun or is it just something that happens naturally without clarification?

My advice would be to http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ and follow the weekly releases you'll be as well informed as I am!

I assume Toady will let us know, yes. He's good about such things.

Big Wait won't be for awhile, mind. Next is the Steam release, followed perhaps by some reworks to armies and sieges and whatnot.

As been mentioned, Toady will probably tell us, and the Big Wait is still quite a bit away regardless:
- Premium arc beginning (i.e. first release): Probably just short of a year away. Followed by the normal bug fixes, of course.
- Doing stuff that didn't get into the Premium release itself , forming the tail end of the arc, followed by stuff that was cut from Villains release due to time constraints (Your time estimate is probably as good as mine)
- Some improved army stuff (Again, guess how long it will take)
- Derails, detours, strange moods, Premium demands...
- Start of the Big Wait.

The Big Wait is the time in which Toady will be working on the Myth and Magic release, which is expected to be around 2 years. Before that, he plans to do the steam release (which will begin after this round of buxfixes ends) and release a second part to the villains update, which he didn't quite finish.

Sorry I'm ootl. What's The Big Wait?
It's a nickname for the next big development phase in which no releases are made and we all wait 2-3 years while following the weekly Devblog. (Although since gaining it's nickname, it's emerged that we'll still get bug fix releases even during the Big Wait).

In theory the last Big Wait (though it wasn't nicknamed back then) was the 2012-2014 Living world update.

Development plans for the Big Wait are a rewrite of the map (makes sites more flexible, recodes some nasty buggy stuff from Toady's youth, makes the underground actually work properly and allows for big map changes during worldgen and during play (Cataclysm)). A myth generator (creates the gods, creatures, their ethics, beliefs, magical powers, afterlives and so on to make each new world created more unique - with sliders to fine tune just how unique/dangerous/fantastical you want your world). A set world editor (for creating worlds with your very own specific historical characters, artifacts, mythology and landscapes).
And a bunch more, much of it relating to the procedurally generated magic systems).

Expect more than a few Big releases until the next Big Wait occurs.

(And as mentioned above, the wait for the Big Wait is ongoing and likely at least a year, probably more away). Steam, Villains part 2 and Improved Sieges/Adventurer medical additions to add before we get there.

Development plans (some of them anyway):

(Tarn starts around 10 minute mark - From back in 2016, and, oh look, he's there with Tanya Short of Kitfox games  :) ).

Thank you for this. I think I remember the last big wait unless it was before we went 3d. I was mainly interested to hear what feature was being developed. Alot of it sounds like back ground noise tbh which isn't bad. Really excited about the wizards bits though.

I thought the big wait would add spell casting to fort mode.  If so, that's a pretty huge change, potentially impacting every aspect of industry, healthcare, and combat.

Will also get the choice to make worlds without any of the D&D races (either completely mundane or completely fantastical). There are huge changes which will effect every part of the game quite significantly.

But, fortress mode will still be a "digging holes in the ground game" (until the non-fantasy worlds you can generate get their own town-building style site game). If that's all you see DF as being, I guess any update from now on is just "background noise".

To Rude's point though, a good portion of the work is going to be background stuff, with the map rewrite needed to make a lot of the other cool stuff possible.  But I expect the end result to be much more of a change in gameplay than even the past several releases were.

Imagine the world map still changing during fort mode play rather than set as is... and the possibilities with magic for modding as well as gameplay overall, elves using healing magic during sieges humans using fire magic or even magic into weapons and armour and the associated resistances or weaknesses to magic types... ritual summoning, being able to perform necro experiments on your own dwarves or goblin prisoners...
