Maybe the dwarf intelligent creature needs to die before the Necromancer's eyes for him to Ghoul it ?

If we have some spare dwarfs merchants or visitors, we could Science that... Using on repeat weapon traps to kill 'em would do

Might work better with an intact corpse. Y'all need a drowning chamber, methinks.

I dimly recall that a corpse needs to have at least one limb with the [GRASP] tag to be a valid target for resurrection; if there aren't any such bits on the torso, it won't rise.

This is also why heads and arms get back up, btw; heads have [GRASP] on the tongue, and arms on the hands, obviously.

Based on some previous tests I did, the requirements for intelligent undead are a bit different. It seems like It's based on the upper body being intact rather than graspers, so even a delimbed torso should work (as cruel an existence that would be). I think it probably comes down to AI targeting quirks. I'll chuck some other corpses in and see what happens.

I'm in love with that puppy.
Thanks! DF's limited colour palette makes it pretty hard to accurately portray something with multiple shades of brown, but I think he turned out okay.

Also, sorry for the slow updates. I'll push to get through the rest of the year over the weekend.

===+ Journal of the Undying Overseer – Autumn 161 +===

23rd Limestone

There’s been another incident of assault. On his way to deal with the caravan, Auze attacked Rakust, the sacred mirth, and then ran off. The poor bastard was already the victim of another attack earlier this year. I don’t know what triggered the attack, but it worries me how Auze seems to have worsened.

I just got word that he started another fight in the library, right in front of the human ambassador. This behaviour is completely unacceptable, but I’m at a loss on how to manage it. He’s an important figure in our fortress and a former overseer so shipping him off to the hillocks is out of the question.

Ah good, he’s calmed down. Well Auze, what do you have to say for yourself?

Sigh… Well, at least that’s something we can work with. Maybe a specific temple to his goddess will help. The Confusing has a few worshippers here but little mainstream recognition.

I also think that some combat training would do well to curb these aggressive tendencies. Many dwarves outside of the militia have expressed the desire to learn. Battering each other with practice weapons should help them let off some steam.

25th Limestone

With Auze out of the Picture, Mateusz stepped up and demonstrated his diplomatic skill by handling the traders. They bring ill news from the capital, I fear. Our king was felled by a goblin during the latest attack this past winter. He reigned for barely a year following the death of queen Datan Tooldip, the fort’s original sponsor, also slain by a goblin. The new queen is known as Amost Tradehandled. May her reign be longer than the last.

We bought the usual assortment of essential resources. wood, iron and steel, gypsum powder, etcetera. One item that stood out was a crate full of “yeti leather”, or at least that’s what they claimed. I have my doubts, but who could pass on such a rare, dubiously legal item? We also offered a host of assorted crafts to curry the favour of our new queen.

Excavation of the new temple has started and already it has been blessed by a cluster of sapphires, including a precious star sapphire. A good omen if ever I’ve seen one.

13th Sandstone

I found Auze huddled in a corner of the Sanctum of Honor, crying about seeing corpses. He’s been kept away from any burial duty so at first, I didn’t know what he was talking about. Then I took a closer look at the random trash pile behind him. Hidden beneath rusting weapons was a mass of assorted bones. An elf, a goblin, even an ogre. All just waiting for someone to walk by and notice them, like some kind of land mine of horror.

Did the sacred mirth do this? It is his temple (even though it looks more like a landfill, the way he keeps it). Maybe that’s what triggered the attack. Well, let’s get that cleaned up before someone else gets traumatized.

5th Timber

Aha! I knew it was just a matter of finding the right motivation!

Rakust’s rotting corpse was buried, apparently suffering enough humiliation to absolve her of her dishonor. However, there was no reason not to put the newly discovered skeletons to use. With some minor renovations and our fearsome cyclops replacing the puppy, old King Kol was much more willing to demonstrate his magic. It remains to be seen if he will produce more than simple zombies, but it’s at least a start.

11th Timber

I just realized that the outpost liaison has been locked outside the walls for two months now. He chose not to enter with the caravan and instead has been waiting at the main gate. Well, hopefully we haven’t damaged our reputation too much. I’ll have to escort him in personally to smooth things over.

13th Timber

Just after the liaison got inside, we heard a rumbling in the distance. Giant!

After months in the wilds, the outpost liaison is refusing to let anything distract him from his mission.

Yes, yes, trade agreements are important and I’m sure the next overseer will endeavour to meet your needs. Now, dwarves, to arms!

14th Timber

We opened the gate and stormed out. One of our swordmasters, Bomrek, caught sight of the giant and ran to engage. She crippled the intruder with several expert strikes and then he stumbled into one of our cage traps.

A somewhat underwhelming ending to the first action we’ve seen in far too long.

Wait, that giant didn’t carry normal weapons. Are those… slabs? He dropped one when Bomrek sliced his arm, but still carries another…

By Weevilmessiah! I know the stink of necromancy better than most, and those things absolutely reek of it! What are these things? Whatever they are, we need to get them secure in the fortress. Are these slabs what lead the necromancers to our doorstep? Surely, they must be searching for these artifacts. But how did a giant get them? Too many questions for now, get everything inside and seal the fort!

Looks like we might be seeing the potential for this fort becoming a necrofort in the future.

Well, you just stumbled upon the few books I didn't want to put in the library.

Also, I just realized one of the slabs is made out of "tin glaze". I'm not sure that's even possible.

===+ Journal of the Undying Overseer – Winter 161 +===

10th Moonstone

I’ve gone through with the planned reorganization of the militia. There is now a new squad of mostly speardwarves known as the Crystal Inquisition. I also revived the old Swap Hunter archer squad. Getting the soldiers re-adapted to the sun is coming along nicely. They still grumble and shield their eyes, but at least they don’t start uncontrollably vomiting anymore.

I’ve planned out a safe place to hide the necromantic slabs until I can learn more about them. Can’t risk anyone trying to read the strange runes carved on them. The giant has stubbornly refused to part with the slab he’s still holding. I can’t allow him to keep it, we’ll have to extract it from him by force.

6th Opal

The slab chamber is ready and now holds the first one, I just need to pry the other from the giant’s hands. Best to minimize exposure, I’ll handle this personally.

Giant! Surrender the slab!

Ah, I needed that workout! Not much of a challenge, but I worked up quite a sweat hacking through his skull! Hmm… he’s still mostly intact and in the right spot right now. I wonder…

Bah, our necromancer is being uncooperative again. I suppose the shock of a cyclops staring at you only works once. Probably for the best, really. An angry undead giant in the heart of our fortress could pose a problem.

Now, to put this slab with the other one. They should be safe, out of reach of necromancers and curious onlookers alike.

15th Opal

Looks like I was wrong, Kol was apparently just oblivious to the shutters opening. He finally caught sight of the cyclops and worked his magic! Just a normal zombie, I’m afraid. Well let’s just get that cleaned up and-

Oh. The giant seems to have been more than our crusher could handle.

Not to worry, situations like these are what the cage trap is for. He’s back in custody with no one the wiser. A bit of a pain that we need to replace the bridge, but accidents happen. Now we just need to figure out what to do with a nigh-indestructible zombie giant.

17th Opal

During all the excitement, KingZultan started acting strange, almost possessed. I hope this isn’t a sign of further necromancer influence. Well she’s claimed a clothier’s workshop and started working furiously on something. Let’s see what comes of it.

21st Opal

KingZultan has finished what she was working on, a wool head veil with an… interesting name.

Huh, apparently, she and Phonso are related somehow.

She says she has no memory of making the veil, but it doesn’t seem to be dangerous… KingZultan at least appears to be a bit happier than she was a few months ago, but whether that is due to the artifact or general improvements in her quality of life, I cannot say.

On that subject, I’ve decided to start displaying our precious artifacts in well-traveled areas of the fortress. Too many of them are lost in forgotten stockpiles or simply rotting in the workshops where they were made.

1st Granite

The rest of the winter has passed without incident, and it is time for me to return the mantle of leadership. Smallhands survives still, despite the best efforts of the necromancers.

Stress levels seem to have dropped for the most part, though Auze and Rovod are still extremely on edge. There may not be much to be done for them.

I am still concerned about the number of citizens with infected wounds. We have plenty of soap now, which should help for the future, but that doesn’t help those already suffering from infection. There’s also the matter of Rakust, who is still stuck in the hospital in traction after Auze’s attack. It’s been months, will he ever walk again?

The military has mostly adjusted to its reorganization, but there are still a few teething issues. When the squads reconfigured, most soldiers took the opportunity to swap out their gear. Unfortunately, some have ended up without boots or gauntlets. Could be a problem. The Swamp Hunters have also been a bit finicky. They aren’t using their archery range, which, admittedly, is quite overgrown at this point. Maybe they need the excitement of a live target? Now there’s a use for the giant…

All told, I’ll be glad to return to smaller duties. A new overseer will soon take command. Good luck, Smallhands!

The inner thoughts of an Alpaca
applet, Ex-overpaca

I hear the dwarves talking about a visitor carrying gifts for us, and that supposedly the gifts had some arcane runes on them.

When I walk past the cages I hear one of the caged dwarves talk to one of my subjects saying that if he reads one of the "slabs" he will never die. Curious. Wish I could read. But on the other foot it's probably does nothing good for your mind.

Come to think of it, there is only one caged dwarf now? I wonder where the other one went. Still waiting for my baron title, wish the bureaucrats would get a move on already.

Hmm.... Those slabs are safe in so far as dwarves can't read slabs.

Likely, that giant is related to the giant who killed the queen's son. Sorry to hear Tooldip passed away without me noticing. Perhaps Smallhands has been forgotten in some way in the chaos of kings and queens.

Well done as always, nogood.

Thoughts on dropping an undead giant on a forgotten beast?

Sorry! The last few turns took longer than I thought, I don't think I'd be able to get started for at least another week. I think you'll have to skip me. Bump me down to the end of the list, hopefully when it rolls around I'll have time again.
