The disease, it spreads!

I saw on the news that they'd found it in some diary cows, but I didn't catch were.

Checking the possible source I picked this up from in December, it was said to be Texas (where bovine incarnations of avian H5N1 may have flipped a receptor to work better in humans).

As I recall, generally not a problem with treated milk ('raw milk' might be a problem, but that's often problematic in other ways), as consuming the remaining viral fragments has the full power of the stomach against them (likely won't even "vaccinate" you, to use the highly appropriate term).

But farm-workers are most at risk, being exposed to aerosol milk droplets/other fluids, so that situation is being monitored.

(In searching for the recent news, I note that this has been a known thing since at least as far back as April 2024, but the receptor change only mentioned a couple of months back. Thought there was something late January, but I'll need to speed-listen to some radio-archives to check that.)

Yeah we saw / are seeing a large flu wave here across the Channel as well. Largest we've seen in years.

Three weekends ago, I was on a trip, probably encountered more people than I generally do in any typical week (even with several trips to the supermarket). By two weekends ago (and only actually one supermarket exposure) I'd come down with something, which I'm still in the end-zone of getting over. Someone I travelled down with escaped the worse (may have picked up sniffles from me, afterwards, or just managed to hold the same thing off for longer and to less effect), which only goes to show. But I'm actually glad it was that way round, as I may have felt horrid in having what I had, but I'd rather it was me (the younger of us, actually) that actually did have to go though it. Disrupted some of my plans for last week, apart from a pre-arranged activity or too (not amongst other people) I did a bit more 'self care', in front of the fireplace, than I would have, but almost back to normal now.

Flu? Maybe. Could be practically anything else we discuss here (short of ebola, and also i'd rule out m-pox), or 'just' a bad spate of a usually more trivially rhinovirus.

In Congo, a mysterious disease is killing people by making them bleed from their eyes, nose and intestines. It is not ebola.
It is rumoured that the disease started when 3 village kids ate a bat.
Investigators are unsure if this is the case. The disease popped up shortly afterwards in a village far away.
So far, 431 cases have been reported. 53 of those have died.

Doctors spooked because patients die within 48 hours of symptoms manifesting

W.H.O. said it could be a new type of viral haemorrhagic fever

Meanwhile in Sudan, 53 dead and 1,300 symptomatic with cholera after paramilitary groups knocked out a water supply plant

And the Daily Mail sent its finest detectives to tiktok to investigate whether banned bushmeat was still being imported to the UK, posing an anthrax & ebola risk

Let's just hope it doesn't go pandemic. Then the US is screwed unless they quickly murder another Kennedy.

A 20% fatality rate within two days of symptoms inclines me to think it's one of those diseases that isn't likely to spread much outside of Africa, unless it has a hell of an incubation time during which it is transmissable. More of an epidemic risk than a pandemic one.

Since it might have come from a bat and is haemorraghic I suspect it's from the same viral family as the various strains of ebola, filoviruses are all haemorraghic in primates and at least so far aren't transmitted through the air. The previous outbreaks of haemorraghic viruses either kill a few dozen or a few thousand people before dying down again, so this could shape up to be a proper humanitarian crisis regardless.

Seems like at this rate we're going to have a potentially deadly disease for everyday of the year.

Hmmm we are going to need a whole lot of new disease names then.
Easter Ebola, Pesasch Plague, Ramadan Rabies, Halloween Herpes, Christmas Gut Rupture, Thanksgiving Turkeypox. I've got some covered already.
