I can't seem to figure out how to do the most important thing, which is pet my pets, how do I do it? I can't find the option, is it buried somewhere?

I think that's mostly due to the interaction is manually added due to being in the txt raws and not a built in mechanic everyone can do.
so hardcoded beings probably don't have means to do this.
this also means if you're making a custom species you need to manually add the pet interaction.

It also means that if you are making a custom species, you can expand on the pet interaction with more options.

Might be related to the fact that the necro-made races I've played so far don't seem to have fingers (or they can't put on rings, at least)
We'll know more once dfhack has been updated

It seems to also provide contact with the creature. Might be funny with modded extremely hot or extremely toxic creatures...
