Blood and Sand - House Magnus (Planning II)

Welcome to House Magnus
Core Thread

House Magnus is well-regarded, especially within military circles. The Magnii are brilliant warriors, strategist, and leaders, even if a little stubborn. They recently finished constructing the basic necessities on land within a serene valley said to have been walked often by the gods. Evidence of an old temple to one of the gods rests upon their property in the form of a square of crumbled stone walls and a cracked, worn, mossy stone floor. A single pedestal still stands bearing the mark of Mars, but there is little else of note. A ludus was also recently constructed on their lands to facilitate their branching into training slaves for Games, with plenty of space for expanding operations.

Three family members are in charge of gladiatorial endeavors. You will be selecting them from the list below and voting for them in "sets" (as in Option 1 = Dudes A, B, D, Option 2 = Dudes A, C, D, etc.). The most important things to note are the token they start with. You will be choosing one of those three family members to be the head of operations. Their token will generate every turn, however they will be out in the public eye, for whatever good or ill it could bring the family. There is also a trait associated with every character. The trait's written effect only applies if they are the head of operations. The Head can be changed, but only once per turn, and at significant cost dependent on circumstances.

Living Family Members are required to run operations. Victory comes only when the other family ceases to exist. There will be occasions to expand the household, but they will be rare and quite costly.

Lucius Magnus Caelius: Head of the Magnus family, and the first of the family to have reaches into social ranks as an Equites through virtuous service in the military, and by such service having brought glory upon House Magnus as a Primus Pilus (Chief Centurion). A stern, hard man (In other terms, a rather ideal roman), Lucius runs the household with the same strict discipline has his legionaries did under him. [+Fame Token][Symbol of Roman Virtues: Many people look to this man as the golden standard for a good Roman. Foreigners, however, are more intimately familiar with his bloody successes than anything else. Interactions with Romans will result in much larger increases in opinion, whereas opinion will decrease faster with non-Romans.]

Gaius Magnus Caelius: Lucius's twin brother. Still in the legion, serving in Germania. Whilst still only a centurion, Gaius has undertaken a second tour in the military after completing his first, driven by ambition to replicate the success of Lucius' career. [+Fame Token][Centurion's Service: Serving in the legion often means years without seeing Rome. It does afford a significant deal of respect from fellow Romans, though. His honorable service makes it more likely that Favor Tokens used on people will result in their owing the Magnii a favor. Deeds required to pay back a debt may also be easier or cheaper.]

Severina Caecilia Sabina: Lucius's wife, and the effective brains behind most of the family's business operations. [+Fortune Token][Shrewd Businesswoman: Severina is capable of negotiating for better payouts in the arena, resulting in an extra Fortune Token for every victory.]

Titus Magnus Calvus: Lucius's first son, whom has enlisted in the legion as befitting the House's reputation. [+Fate Token][Newblood: An empty head and willingness to learn is an attractive asset to those who teach. Recruiting a trainer for your gladiators may result in better results than the roll would have allowed.]

Tycho Flavius Vulpus: Unrelated to the family. Served directly under Lucius Magnus Caelius as his Optio. Now he helps manage Lucius' estate as well as handle the general dirty work and low level details. They also posses a pet Red fox. [+Fate Token][Ex-Flavii: Tycho's betrayal of his branch of the family didn't sit well with the Magnii, but he's proven himself trustworthy beyond measure. Still, he has a touch of the Flavii Flair, resulting in custom equipment being flashier and showier at no extra cost/difficulty.]

Tertius Avitus Cato: The man who operates as the Ludus's owner/manager, given the social connotations of being a vendor of human flesh for public entertainment. Not that he doesn't earn a fair pay for what he does, but the concern is to shield house Magnus from the social repercussions of renting out gladiators. [+Favor Token][Hired Help: Tertius is familiar with plenty of working gangs, and can get them to the estate with little issue. Skilled hands for constructing additional facilities or upgrades means there is a chance they will end up better than the results rolled would have allowed.]

Given the absolute vitality of trainers and facilities, we'll definitely want Titus and Tertius as part of our head of operations. Beyond that, we'd should get either Severina or Tycho.

This gives us a chance each turm to get free favors from our favor token.

Alternatively, if you want all fate, I recommend Titus (head), Tycho, and either Tertius or Severina.

This way we have the opportunity to get all types of token, and put up a business related front.

Per the GM, the two other operators only provide their tokens once (Or else, it's not a steady income), so the real thing is if we can swap them around as necessary. Or else keep the gladiator business 'peripheral' to our family in order to avoid any backlash for owning such a business.

Blood and Sand - House Magnus (Action I)
« Reply #9 on: February 06, 2020, 02:25:55 pm »

Action Phase I

The keen of mind who read the rules now posted in the core thread may have noticed we are skipping the Planning Phase. This is because you have no Gladiators to assign to bouts yet. In BoC I mashed phases together, but this caused some confusion on the next turn. Don't worry too much. Keep reading and everything will be okay.

Severina, Tycho, and Tertius met to discuss ways to get the attention of those in charge of setting up Games. While some connections could be used to slide into a low-level match somewhere, the option to hold an exhibition on the property was also discussed. The trio made their way to the local forum to browse the slave stock that would be required regardless of how their introduction would be decided. While they could use all their resources getting as many Gladiators as they could, they'd obviously need to leave with at least one to set up a match, two if you want the option to set up your own exhibition. Their choice would be the first of many to steer their family toward greatness...or ruin.

There was a lot of slave stock available for perusal, as the wars with Gaul were bringing in a large number of the barbarians. Four in particular seemed fit for the arena.

Gallic Clan Leader (Cost: 2 Tokens)
Traits: Gaul, Nobleman, Broken
Technique: 2 (Convertible)
Resilience: 5
Agility: 4
Intelligence: 4
Theatrics: 3
Strength: 1
Equipment: Rags

Gallic Farmer (Cost: 1 Token)
Traits: Gaul, Farmer
Technique: 3 (Convertible)
Resilience: 6
Agility: 2
Intelligence: 2
Theatrics: 3
Strength: 6
Equipment: Rags

Gallic Druid (Cost: 1 Token)
Traits: Gaul, Priest
Technique: 2 (Convertible)
Resilience: 5
Agility: 2
Intelligence:  5
Theatrics: 5
Strength: 2
Equipment: Rags

Roman Miner (Cost: 1 Token)
Traits: Roman, Miner
Technique: 3 (Convertible)
Resilience: 3
Agility: 4
Intelligence: 3
Theatrics: 3
Strength: 4
Equipment: Rags

----------------

It is time to Purchase Gladiators. You will need to vote on which ones to buy as well as which tokens to use. You will also need to decide if you'll be fighting against a random opponent in a public exhibition or stage a private exhibition at home between your own stock. As you can imagine, a private show will have a much different audience than a public one. As this will be your first fight you may really want to think about what kind of image you'll be painting of your family.

While this would be the phase where you buy equipment for your Gladiators, you do not need to do so now as the exhibition will be fought with training weapons regardless of which you choose. That way you can equip your first Gladiators based on the Traits you discover upon ownership. You can still purchase upgrades this phase if you decide to.

Ludus Refurbishment:
The current state of our Ludus is shameful, with conditions in it being poor and basic. As proper Romans, we cannot allow such an asset owned by us, even one of dubious morality, to remain in such a state of disrepair. By getting some construction workers in to fix the building up, and scheduling a proper maintenance routine afterwards would greatly improve the facility's capacity to train and house gladiators.

New Trainers: Whilst our current stock of trainers aren't too bad, To make our fighters shine we need better trainers and more of them. This requires more trainers and staff to keep up with the demand for high-quality gladiators.

Another Training Team: Of course, as the school grows, we need to consistently be able to produce gladiators of quality. By getting a second team of trainers would ensure we can do so without hampering the training schedule of other gladiators.

Better Training Equipment: As much as a wooden post is good for teaching a fresh gladiator how to swing a sword, and which bit to swing, it's not awfully conductive to the knowledge needed to actually survive in a proper fight. By upgrading and refurbishing the training equipment available to us we can magnify the effects our trainers have, and greatly increase the ability we have to prepare our fighters for proper combat.

Plan: Salt of the Earth
-Purchase Gallic Farmer (Fortune Token)
-Purchase Roman Miner (Fate Token)

-New Trainers (Fate Token)
-Ludus Refubishment (Fortune Token)
-Better Training Equipment (Fate Token)
-Temple Restoration (Favor Token)

Wait, you think we really follow the Roman gods? >.>

Edit: another religous option to add to Mars.

Edit:
Plan New Roman Might
Buy the Chieftain (Fate Token x2)
Buy the Farmer (Fortune Token)

Refurbish Ludus (Fortune Token)
New Trainers (Fate Token)
Refurbish Doctore (Favor Token)

We will take the broken of Gaul and show the world what can be made by hammering strong the might of Mars. We will present new Roman warriors to the world, and it will tremble before us.
