Blood and Sand - House Flavius (Planning II)

Welcome to House Flavius
Core Thread

House Flavius is most known for it's silver-tongued politicians, shrewd merchants, and aptitude with coin. Their sprawling estate practically envelops a popular crossroads outside of Rome. Their opulence draws many an eye, though their lavish galas draw much more than that. Always keen on opportunities to make more money, the Flavii erected and maintain a tavern for travelers to drink, eat, rest, and spend their money. A ludus was also recently constructed on their lands to facilitate their branching into training slaves for Games, with plenty of space for expanding operations.

Three family members are in charge of gladiatorial endeavors. You will be selecting them from the list below and voting for them in "sets" (as in Option 1 = Dudes A, B, D, Option 2 = Dudes A, C, D, etc.). The most important things to note are the token they start with. You will be choosing one of those three family members to be the head of operations. Their token will generate every turn, however they will be out in the public eye, for whatever good or ill it could bring the family. There is also a trait associated with every character. The trait's written effect only applies if they are the head of operations. The Head can be changed, but only once per turn, and at significant cost dependent on circumstances.

Living Family Members are required to run operations. Victory comes only when the other family ceases to exist. There will be occasions to expand the household, but they will be rare and quite costly.

Marcus Flavius Ebrius:
Eldest son of Marcus Flavius Laudis, Ebrius followed in his father's footsteps into politics, but also in his uncle's footsteps into a fondness of parties. He is the current head of the family, and is generally considered a kind, generous patriarch. His political career has not gone as well as those of his forefathers, having failed to attain a position in the senate thusfar- he failed twice to be elected as quaestor-, but he is hopeful that this gladiator business can generate enough fame to get him elected before he turns sixty. [+Fame Token][Bacchus' Chosen: Frequent celebrations leave the estate stocked. Your champion gladiator feasts well and does not dig into the Food cost of slaves (no Food Upkeep). Champions are the most victorious gladiator unless manually assigned to someone.]

Titia Aelia Pecuniosia:
Aelia is the wife of Marcus Flavius Ebrius, and despite the Roman tendency to ignore women, works hard for the sake of her new family- de facto managing many of the family's businesses. Under her leadership, the family's fortunes have grown steadily, although she is somewhat skeptical of the value of gladiators, and so is hesitant to invest too much into the new venture. [+Favor Token][Profitable Ventures: Titia has a hand in the sale of memorabilia of the family's gladiators. Victories grant a Fortune Token in addition to the pot. This triggers for every individual victory, not per turn.]

Marcus Flavius Lanista:
Scion of the Flavius family, Marcus Flavius Lanista has thusfar shown little interest in politics, preferring to spend much of his time watching gladiatorial games. He is the driving force behind the family's investment into gladiators- and, in fairness, he brings together all of his family's interests in this pursuit; a knack for showing people a good time, a talent for spending money wisely, and the skills of a shrewd political operator (in the form of a stirring speech to the family regarding the virtues of gladiators). [+Fame Token][Plebeian Tongue: Marcus Flavius is as well-spoken as any of the Flavii. He just has a better grasp on vulgarity and humor. His disarming manner makes it more likely that Favor Tokens used on people will result in their owing the Flavii a favor. Deeds required to pay back a debt may also be easier or cheaper.]

Caeso Flavius Mensa:
Second son of Marcus Flavius Ebrius, Caeso has chosen to enter the business side of the family's affairs. His aptitude for mathematics is extraordinary, and he has already started to develop his own techniques for handling the family's finances. His actual negotiation abilities leave something to be desired- he is somewhat shy and reclusive-, but he can quickly calculate whether a deal will be profitable, which ensures that at least he is very hard to fleece. [+Fortune Token][Advanced Mathematics: Numbers are useful for a great number of things. Besides money, of course, they're also quite handy in construction! Buildings, upgrades, and expansions onto the ludus have a chance at being higher quality than rolled.]

Pyrinikos of Abdera:
A Greek scholar, from Abdera (a town in Thrace), with some interesting views on the workings of the world, being a proponent of the works of Democritus (whose wild theories ranged from the existence of 'atoms' that make up all matter; the existence of other worlds orbiting distant stars; the notion that animals and plants change in form over time; and more generally that the universe is inherently mechanical). He is employed by the Flavius family as a tutor, advisor, and status symbol (a Greek spouting bizarre philosophy is just something wealthy Roman families have). [+Fate Token][Foreign Affairs: While foreigners aren't unusual in Rome, having one running the affairs of a strong Roman family is. Interactions with non-Romans will gain reputation much faster, while interaction with Romans will lose it faster.]

Publius Flavius Lepidus:
A man enthralled by fashion, appearance, and style. Rumor has it that he intentionally sabotages his own repeated attempts at attaining public office in order to consistently don the splendidly white toga candida. Of course, he was highly upset on the occasion that he'd proven to be the best candidate and won. He is known by many, and considered quite eccentric by nearly all of them. [+Fame Token][Hedonistic Philosophy: Always do what makes you content or happy. Especially if it's fabulous. A "little bit" of flair is added to custom equipment at no extra cost/difficulty.]

Well, gonna give my pitch.

Quote
Option A: Titia (head of ops), Pyrinikos, Lepidus

Basically, trying to get some variety in options, with the chance to get some early income boost from Titia's trait; we're probably going to spend the first bit getting general equipment for our gladiators so Lepidus' trait is more useful later on when we have our baseline established.

Of course, Twin is neither man nor woman but an unholy eldritch abomination like every other Bay12er. The difference is they hide it better.

Think we all agree here. Just need to get a few characters made from our own hand after this, like last time.

Basically what powderminer said, that and it was ages ago and I never got the chance to make a character, even for Magnus. I have an idea though...

Blood and Sand - House Flavius (Action I)
« Reply #10 on: February 06, 2020, 02:26:20 pm »

Action Phase I

The keen of mind who read the rules now posted in the core thread may have noticed we are skipping the Planning Phase. This is because you have no Gladiators to assign to bouts yet. In BoC I mashed phases together, but this caused some confusion on the next turn. Don't worry too much. Keep reading and everything will be okay.

Titia, Pyrinikos, and Publius met to discuss ways to get the attention of those in charge of setting up Games. While some connections could be used to slide into a low-level match somewhere, the option to hold an exhibition on the property was also discussed. The trio made their way to the local forum to browse the slave stock that would be required regardless of how their introduction would be decided. While they could use all their resources getting as many Gladiators as they could, they'd obviously need to leave with at least one to set up a match, two if you want the option to set up your own exhibition. Their choice would be the first of many to steer their family toward greatness...or ruin.

There was a lot of slave stock available for perusal, as the wars with Gaul were bringing in a large number of the barbarians. Four in particular seemed fit for the arena.

Gallic Clan Leader (Cost: 2 Tokens)
Traits: Gaul, Nobleman, Broken
Technique: 6 (Convertible)
Resilience: 6
Agility: 2
Intelligence: 6
Theatrics: 1
Strength: 2
Equipment: Rags

Gallic Hunter Cost: 1 Token)
Traits: Gaul, Hunter
Technique: 3 (Convertible)
Resilience: 2
Agility: 5
Intelligence: 4
Theatrics: 4
Strength: 5
Equipment: Rags

Gallic Mystic (Cost: 2 Tokens)
Traits: Gaul, Herbalist, Priest
Technique: 3 (Convertible)
Resilience: 5
Agility: 1
Intelligence: 4
Theatrics: 6
Strength: 1
Equipment: Rags

Roman Criminal (Cost: 1 Token)
Traits: Roman, Thief
Technique: 4 (Convertible)
Resilience: 1
Agility: 6
Intelligence: 1
Theatrics: 5
Strength: 3
Equipment: Rags

----------------

It is time to Purchase Gladiators. You will need to vote on which ones to buy as well as which tokens to use. You will also need to decide if you'll be fighting against a random opponent in a public exhibition or stage a private exhibition at home between your own stock. As you can imagine, a private show will have a much different audience than a public one. As this will be your first fight you may really want to think about what kind of image you'll be painting of your family.

While this would be the phase where you buy equipment for your Gladiators, you do not need to do so now as the exhibition will be fought with training weapons regardless of which you choose. That way you can equip your first Gladiators based on the Traits you discover upon ownership. You can still purchase upgrades this phase if you decide to.

Spend a Fortune Token to purchase the Gallic Hunter: (1) Powder Miner
Spend a Fame Token to purchase the Gallic Mystic: (1) Powder Mine
Spend a Favor Token to contract the services of a better Doctore (ideally with specialty in agility): (1) Powder Miner
Hold a public exhibition: (1) Powder Miner
In order:
The Gallic Hunter is kind of a god of stats, look at this DUDE, and his theatrics aren’t even shabby. Money seems like a good route for, you know, a slave purchase.
The Gallic Mystic has fuckin 6 theatrics, we GOTTA have him, and in addition Herbalist seems like a likely helpful stat — for someone so stylish, using Fame seems potentially suspicious.
A better trainer is seriously vital, it is absurd how much of an action economy boost this could be if we get an extra training die. If Magnus does this and not us we’re in very serious trouble. I prefer agility focus simply because agility and theatrics seem to me to go together very well. Quick flashy mans. Favor strikes me as also the best token for establishing long-term relationships, considering its nature, and getting a better trainer to work with us all game is exactly that.
Naturally, a public exhibition fits the flair and style and ostentatiousness of House Flavius, yes?

To put it simply, I think we are all picking the hunter because the hunter is great, just take our money already. The Thief however I feel is a better investment than the mystic for a actual Gladiator. I'd rather the fragile speedster than the tank that can't throw a punch. Unless we want the Mystic as a Medicus anyway.

Well, we can pop a die to increase his strength, but his herbalist trait may be useful to help with stuff like medicine, yeah, or maybe various tricky powders to throw during battle. THAT we couldn’t train into the thief, and it’s a particularly unique path.

(Magic is also a potential option with the Mystic, considering he IS a mystic)
