I, personally, like TankKit's names.

Glass is, as usual, correct.
Yep, as ever, I bestow upon Glass the expected +1
I'm gonna say we go with whatever Glass's idea is.

I’ll +1 this.

I don’t think fancy names would be at the forefront of colonists’ minds, and I don’t think that would necessarily have changed over the history of the colony.

I mean, the planet name was probably decided before arrival, so it likely would be kinda pretentious.
Meanwhile, TankKit's proposed name is also fairly straightforward and self-explanatory, while still sounding better in my opinion.
(I'm also not really clear on whether Ghaz's suggestion was for the planet name or the Republic's.)

Nah name of the Planet, bit of a reference to Hyperion Cantos, where they have Renaissance Center as an important world.

Like Glass said, it most likely wouldn't be the colonists themselves naming the planet, it would be the government that first decided to send them there. It's pretentious enough to be a realistic name for the planet, having a fair amount of meaning while still being quite simple, and rolls of the tongue nicely.

You do know that's it's still going to get shortened, right? Probably to any of:
- One word or the other ("Novus" or "Mundus")
- Getting translated into normal English (Just being "New Earth", since "New York" is simple enough for people)
- Some contraction of the full name ("Nomun", "Nomund", getting corrupted into "Norman"...)
People love their shortenings.

Of course. It is quite unreasonable to expect an entire planet to pronounce a word the same way and, like Hector said, most colonists won't particularly care about it.

It will always by Novus Mundus in my heart, however. :P

So would it be reasonable that someone would be a complete memer when founding it and gave it a meme name so it would never die?

To work on the contraction idea, Novmun is a good one. Otherwise, can we please put latin back in the grave whence it came?

Giving the planet a meme name won't make it less easily forgotten. You have to bear in mind this is an entire WORLD full of people under one government. There's going to be different versions of the name no matter what.
