Commander Arms Race: Core Thread (Preliminary Turns)

Commander Arms Race

Philosophers call this the age of peace. They say that the horrors of war have finally cured humanity of its taste for wide scale destruction. That men grow tired of dying for their masters, that this last fifty years since a major conflict will be representative of the world going forward. They say that the weapons man can turn upon men are too terrible to contemplate using. They say that there will be no more war. They are wrong.

The old generals remember war. They remember glorious charges, heroic victories and valiant last stands. They think this generation has grown soft for lack of war. They conjure fears of the “enemy” in their people, push their governments to react to even the mildest slight. They rattle their sabers, aching to draw and lead their nations to glory once again. They believe a good war will be healthy for the state and over quickly. They are also wrong.

Alliances tangle together like a powder keg’s string, waiting for a single spark to light a wildfire. Two nations, isolated from their allies but strategically positioned, strike a match.

Askia to the East and Etroa, to the West each claim the other has wronged them, and muster for war. While they are each isolated from their peers, they have a disproportionate influence on the world stage, each known for their incredibly competent military commanders, and for the unique, nearly magical resources they bring to the table.

Ever since they became neighboring states, tensions have brewed. Ever since they showed their strength, nations have courted them to their sides. And when tensions boil over and war breaks out, the rest of the continent will surely erupt into warfare.

The philosophers lose their age of peace, the generals are forced to learn what modern war really is, and the world burns.

Well, now that’s the cheerful introduction of the way. Let’s get into the meat of this opening post, yes?

This is an Arms Race, and most of you know what that means. For those who don’t, here’s a TLDR. You take the role of the R&D divisions of two nations, designing the equipment used by your nation’s military, be it land, air, or sea. You also take some level of command over those forces because ostensibly you know how best to implement your equipment, but this mostly boils down to choosing where you attack.

This particular AR is heavily inspired by Man of Paper’s Industrialized Warfare Arms Race and Mechanized Warfare Arms Race, although I hope to put my own spin on the ideas and hope that you guys don’t just decide to try and replicate the special resources in those.

Annnd that’s about it unless I forgot something. Standard rules of etiquette apply; mistakes can be made on the part of the GM and players alike, emotions can run high, but try and keep it chill and try not to pick a fight - your team isn’t trying to lose just because they prefer someone else’s idea after all. Feel free to ask questions (Although keep in mind I’m not an engineering major, I’m probably not going to get so granular as tensile strength and specific heat capacities of your ubermetal :p).

Throughout the preliminary turns, try to keep the character and history of your country in mind, because there is a lore contest that ends with the last preliminary phase, rewarding the winner with an espionage credit.

Turn 1 Designs was a foundation for the general direction our nations; lots more speculation and arguing as such.

You'd think that it'd be quicker to decide on a single design than two revisions, wouldn't you? Votes are locked.

Classical Era Conflict and World Developments

To understand the war of today, we must understand the past that led to this. While until recently, such a war was unthinkable, looking at history it must instead be seen as inevitable.

The two principal belligerents of the war are, as we should all be well aware, Askia and Etroa. Both formed, at least in their original incarnations, from a unification of various tribes in their respective environments, and set about consolidating power in their region - but that’s where the similarities end.

The Nations

The Askian people are from a land of duality. The Askian Savannah, with it’s life-giving rivers, was a place of plenty where the Askian tribes originated. But they were isolated by the Desert Tu, keeping them locked off from the world at large. Their civilization developed through the lifetime of Chijindum, the Great Unifier, a philosopher-chief who mastered both the pen and the sword; his law codes are said to be the first complete writings in history, and his conquest was what gave birth to Askia as a proper civilization. At the same time, Askia was home to a unique gas, coming up from the earth and always drifting north. What we today call “magnetofumes”, served as a prototype compass, allowing for navigation of the featureless deserts, as well as a variety of other properties. The Askian Kingdom spread across both the savannah and the desert, and later made a friend and trade partner in what was then the Kingdom of Ofal.

Etroa’s path was different. Settled around the world’s largest caldera, the Etroan tribes had access to large amounts of metal and were some of the first groups in the world to work metal into usable shapes, the forge becoming a fixture of the Etroan village - to this day, craftsmanship and skill are some of Etroa’s highest values. The Etroan Caldera is home to the unique, opal like gem known as “sunseeds”, a mysterious material that, at the time, was known primarily for how, despite itself being no hotter or colder than a regular stone, would quickly heat water to a boiling point when making contact. The fact it also caused blood to boil when the Etroans stuck it on their spears and swords is believed to have been some evidence that early scholars pointed to as proof that blood was partially made of water rather than it’s own unique substance. As they expanded, they made contact with the mountain civilization of Icona.

Many believe that the rivalry of Askia and Etroa was inevitable. There wasn’t enough space on the ismuth where they originated for two great powers. Through millenia, through countless waxes and wanes of power, through any number of changes in regime and internal and external struggle, the two states have been at each other’s throats since they met. Scholars theorize endlessly at what could have been had their first meeting not been in battle, if they could have at some point worked out their differences - there are glimpses of what could be, in the rare bouts of cooperation for mutual benefit. Whatever people say and theorize and preach about, Askia and Etroa met for the first time on the field of combat, and that would portend their relations all the way to the modern era.

The Battles

As Etroa marched on Ofal’s scrublands, it met an Askian army coming to the aid of it’s friend and trade partner. Or rather, it was ambushed by an Askian army. The Askian scouts had discovered the invaders well before the Etroan scouts met with the Askians, trained as they were by the griots of the Golden Path in the ability to navigate rougher terrain faster, along with a tool that was later learned of by Etroan scholars - the magnetofluid compass - that let them easily discern their location. When the Askian forces met the Etroans, it was in ambush. The forces met with a clash of iron and bronze. Man for man, Etroa had better weaponry and armor; while both had metal armor and weaponry, the Etroans had it in higher quality and quantity, and the sunshard spears and swords would generally take someone out of a fight if they managed to pierce an enemy, boiling blood around the wound. But while Etroa had an advantage in equipment, Askia had the advantage in the discipline of their soldiers, and in an ambush followed by a chaotic melee, that was important; while Etroan formations bent and broke into skirmishes of individuals and small groups, Askian troops continued to fight as units. Led by their officers, martial priests following the Iron Way, the Askian troops managed to make good on their ambush. Dotted across the line were units of shock-troops, the “Warrior-Sorcerers” wearing Fumehide Armor, armor made of a tough hide-like substance; while if it were normal hide, these men would fall quickly, the Etroan soldiers found their iron weapons jerked away by an unseen force as they tried to stab; lethal blows were made merely wounding, and some would-be wounds were avoided entirely. After a long and grueling battle, the remaining Etroan forces withdrew - the Askian army found pursuit difficult, as they found the retreat covered by new fortifications that the scouts had not found before the battle.

Meanwhile, Askia’s invasion force entered the mountain passes and found itself facing Etroan fortifications. The scouts reported seeing men with strange bronze contraptions on their arms, belching steam as they pounded stakes into the ground - the fortifications seemed to grow more complex by the minute. This force, unlike that in the North, had dug in heavily in the passes leading to the Iconan capital. As in Ofal’s battles with the Western nation, Askian scouts found the weakest part of the fortifications and the army assaulted them. After a bloody battle, they managed to breach them, and rounded to flank the enemy army. However, when they did they found more fortifications, that had been erected recently - the clouds of steam over the retreating combat engineers attested to what had happened. Every line of fortifications breached gave Etroa more time to organize and arm, and soon, Askia was facing the brunt of the Etroan army. While their excellent training and leadership meant that Askian forces, while tired, were not as broken and bloody as many would be after that grueling slog, there’s only so much soldiers can take. After a comparatively brief clash, the army broke; the retreat was disciplined, with several fumehide-bearing warrior-sorcerers and monks of the Iron Way proving a vicious rear guard, but a retreat it was.

And so the status quo of the ismuth was set. To the East, Askia, and to the West, Etroa. Two great powers that would bicker and battle through the ages, dragging their allies into war with them.

-Excerpts from History of the Grand War, Chapter 1: Conflict on the Askia-Etroa Ismuth. Book by Yuzuan Federation historian Patariki Nakora, 1915
