Askia, when one talks of the edge of the world many look to the lands and seas beyond their sight. When the proto-Askian people passed down legends they spoke not os such things. They told instead of the skies above and deeps below. Today we know of Askia, the land, as one of the geological wonders of the world for it holds said world's tallest mountain along with its largest and deepest cavern system both. The charted regions accessible to the public reach depths of approximately two kilometers, mining operations reach deeper and the lowest publically known location is over 30km below sea level. In conjunction with the mountains above the system reaches over 50km in depth.

The Aski mountain range and associated foothills provide a near imprenetrable barrier to any who wish to cross, however in the modern age the use af the cave system and strategic tunnelling alongside a robust transport infrastructure allows a valuable and lucrative trade route through this otherwise impassable terrain.

Past conquests, canny marriages and in one case during the medieval period of Yurup the economic domination of a hostile nation into a puppet state allowed the Askain civilization to expand far past the foothills its people origonated from.

Traditional Askian villages are, while not overly packed, rather dense affairs. They can be found both above and underground yet those entombed within the stone are primarily of military construction as extremely well fortified strongpoints to deal with matters deemed of vital import to the nation.

Towns and cities are both primarily surface based with far smaller proportions of their settlement extending into the mountains. Such locales are primarily reserved for the settlement's industrial sectors as a way of separating them from the populace. Rigerously enforced legislation prevents runoff and waste being disposed of into the tunnels, the penalty for which is death to those who do such and those who order it. If such is done accidentally then large fines and a hefty prison sentance is levied against the group responsible even if such is due to negligence. This is usually a shocking prospect for foreigners however the caverns hold as a near incomprehensible cultural icon and living history. An entire fourteen kilometers of tunnels are sectioned off for preservation by the nearest university as they uphold a tradition of maintaining and expanding on history through cave art.

The administrative and bureaucratic heart of the nation, the capital city is located at a conflux of three valleys and two rivers. It is entirely devoid of access to the cave systems. Compared to most settlements it is also of notably below average altitude and unusually, is not among the largest cities population-wise.

The most famous cities internally are also the smallest, largely cities in name only. They share geographical coordinates yet differ greatly in altitude. The first was a bronze and iron age cultural centre constructed on the Death Zone of the highest peak. From its temple gardens and houses one can see the curvature of the Earth, it is here that the theory of a spherical planet was first proven. The city plays host to the world's highest observatory and temple. A sect of priests maintains the temple and on occasion expeditions to the summit of the world. They return intact most of the time.

The lower city also has a number of choice names, in some parlance it has been colloquially nicknamed the Sunken City and the City of Stone. As readers may have guessed this is due to its rather hidden location. Deep within the warren of the caverns the city has been carved out, it it notable for being located only four hundred meters above sea level where the average settlement is closer to 2500m. Its population is small and again consists of a sect of priests. They too plot expeditions but for them, the depths of the mountains are the goal, over millennia they have charted the tunnel systems. As such information is of strategic importance the settlement also holds a relatively large garrison in comparison to its non-military population. This city is regarded as a significant holy site and pilgrimages are often made. There is a tradition amongst some of the pilgrims of accompanying the priests into the depths, often these are those who are sick or crippled sometimes they are able of body and mind. Ancient writings indicate that centuries ago willing sacrifices were taken, the priests say that this practice has been long discontinued however some note that not every member of the expeditions returns. Rumour says that there is a secret temple in the depths, when asked the priests said that while there is no temple an ancient shrine did exist and had been lost at some point in the past, they also requested that nobody venture past the safe zones as the caves are far worse than any warren imaginable. Not coincidentally travel to depths below this settlement is forbidden by the government and known passageways either monitored or blocked off trespassers risk being fined or imprisoned in accordance with the depth they have reached. Some criticism has been levelled at how such a measurement is done as it is based on extremely old records of dubious accuracy internationally.

This dual paradox in the landscape and settlement of the nation is central to the Askian psychology. For millennia their society has existed on the boundary between two worlds. They live above and at altitude or below, in the stale air of the earth. Unsurprisingly the majority chose the latter.

The Askian people are known for their endurance, the altitude at which the home provinces exist provides a harsh winter yet a bevy of specially cultivated plants and a number of hardy animals allows a far greater population to live there than expected. This boon was generally unexpected by those who attempted to invade and those who were invaded as it allowed for a far larger ability to wage war than most enemies would predict.

As a product of their environment the Askians have exceptionalled skilled light infantry regular divisions, while referred to domestically as 'Infantry Type Light', they are oft classified as special mountain divisions by other nation's strategic command.

"Technology": Chijindum and Chijindum's Code of Laws

The nomadic people who migrated across the Askian Savannah and into the Tu Desert were, for all intents and purposes, perfectly mundane flatland human tribals. They contended with the environment, flora, and fauna exactly as well as one would expect. Indeed, the rate of advancement of the Askian tribes was perfectly average.

There were a number of separate Askian tribes at first. This changed when Chijindum [Author's Note: Igbo for "God holds my life" - us and twin being god eheheh] came of age. Legends say that as a child Chijindum killed an attacking lion with a single blow to the head from a stone held in his hand, and the tales only get more fantastical as time goes on. The facts we've managed to verify still tell quite the story. Chijindum's father was killed by the tribal leader, Chijindum and his mother were exiled from their tribe, and they were forced to shelter with another tribe who was quite wary of outsiders. Chijindum learned how to fight and trained hard and constantly until he'd grown to be an adult as well as the most fearsome warrior of the tribe that had adopted him. His mother had passed of illness a couple of years before Chijindum felt capable of exacting revenge, and with the nights getting longer warriors weren't seeing as much use in general. This left Chijindum with nothing to keep him from setting out toward his old tribe.

Chijindum had played the part of outgoing curious child plenty of times when travelers crossed the tribe's path, and he'd managed to keep track of the migration of his first tribe. He came upon them with a sling and a spear, announced himself, and demanded satisfaction in single combat with his father's killer - who by this point was getting old. Still, the man ran the tribe through fear, and when Chijindum's challenge was announced, a single wave commanded two tribesmen he had as personal guards to club Chijindum to death.

However the fight went, Chijindum gained leadership of his old tribe and used his close ties to his adopted tribe to merge the two while retaining leadership. The uniting into a "supertribe" led to greater needs, which led to settling land, agriculture, and territorial claiming. With the singular tribe settling and expanding rapidly, Chijindum needed to delegate duties to those who could act in his stead. In order to regulate the actions of these Governors it fell upon Chijindum to create the Code of Laws. These nearly 300 rules established standards, fines, and punishments across the tribe, and is the oldest known collection of deciphered writings to date. The Code of Laws was etched onto stone pillars at the center of every village and settlements, and are the clearest indicator of ancient Askian presence.

----

For Twin: To clarify, I'm attempting to get a good, popular, not-a-total-dick leader for the people who is most known for his establishment of laws. I left both the fight to take the tribe and the specifics or effects the Code of Laws had extremely vague so that you could define those in the results. I didn't want to write how noble and honorable of a fight Chijindum had if he rolls shit and is an Ancient Hitler.

Resource: Magnetofumic Vents, Magnetofumes, and Magnetofumic Navigation (Sphere - Electromagnetism)

Magnetofumic Vents are holes thrust deep into the earth that constantly emit a light grey, slightly reflective, weakly-bound magnetic smog. The Magnetofumes are the product of some element deep within the planet being heated and escaping through gaps in the mantle and crust to the surface. The fumes themselves are nontoxic, and have the peculiar tendency to drift consistently towards the nearest magnetic pole. At least until the Magnetofumes dissipate into the atmosphere. This behavior aided the ancient Askians in their travels across the near-featureless Tu Desert, acting as a compass before the invention of the device.

----

Different take on ferrogas. Also provides some interaction as well as a "design" for it. Indirectly gives the interaction of cooling into liquid/solid states by stating the fumes are the result of heating something else, and gives a navigation bonus.

Extended discussion of why exactly the Abberans screwed up our conception of special resources and that a game run by a former Salviosi will use their conception of resources has led to changes in my opinion.
