Commander: Hasdrubal Bowelle
Type: Offensive

Hasdrubal Bowelle was born and raised in the Tu Desert at an oasis outpost near the western border with Etroa that saw Hasdrubal meet countless travelers, pilgrims, and griots. The childhood home of Hasdrubal was a permanent posting for his father, a Rulaaran cavalry officer, who oversaw most of the goings-on in the outpost and was treated as de facto governor by the civilian residents. His mother was a faithful Chiite and remarkably tall among Askians - a trait passed down to Hasdrubal, who stood a head taller than his peers. The guidance of Hasdrubal's parents saw him adopt the Chiite faith of his mother, while his father's influence saw him acquire a growing interest in the military. Hasdrubal spent his youth attending school, learning to ride a horse, how to maintain an Askian maglock rifle, and interacting with a wide variety of travelers before deciding he'd join his father in walking The Iron Way and devote himself to the life of a warrior.

Hasdrubal attended the Askian War Academy and graduated top of his class before being placed in command of a platoon in training. While there had been plenty of peace between nations for a generation, Askia had been plagued by Chijindum rebels, and Hasdrubal's unit was part of a company being created specifically for the task of rebel suppression. Training largely emphasized mobility and rapid pinpoint strikes using small squad tactics in conjunction with support from weapons teams as opposed to the relatively recently outdated battle lines.

Being a student of warfare, Hasdrubal was quick to pick up on the direction of the evolution of combat as battlefields saw more industrialized warfare. This willingness to adapt reflected itself on the battlefield through Hasdrubal's ability to improvise tactics as situations evolved. This proved beneficial during a particularly brutal three months when a full-on civil war threatened to break out in the northern Tu Desert. Hasdrubal was in charge of enforcement of martial law and suppression of dissidents that was considered to be a low-risk area. This turned out to be false, as a significantly well-armed rebel group formed up one evening and besieged the command post set up in the town square. The CP was hit hard, with Hasdrubal's two immediate commanding officers being killed during the first volley of grenades. Hasdrubal was quick to reorganize his men and beat back the assault, but instead of pulling out of the area or digging in to recover he launched an immediate counter-attack with anyone who could still move and shoot. Rebel forces were hounded during their retreat, and while the street fighting was intense, Hasdrubal's troops were better trained and inspired by Hasdrubal's presence (and his demand for immediate retribution). Eventually the rebels were surrounded and besieged in a multistory cramped apartment building, which required extremely close-quarters fighting. Pistols, bayonets, knives, rifle butts, a few broken bottles, some table legs, and a cinderblock were used to clear the building room-by-room.

While the successful counterattack led to the local rebellion being destroyed, other pockets along the northern coast required clearing. Hasdrubal was given quite a hefty promotion and put in charge of the entire operation - a battalion-sized force. The suppression of revolts and widespread success of the "Hounds of Hasdrubal" put Hasdrubal Bowelle on the fast track up the ranks, and garnered him favorable postings as his actions drew the eye of a grateful state. As the threat of war with Etroa bloomed, Hasdrubal had the distinct honor of being the highest-ranked officer in the Askian armed forces that had seen and survived direct combat during the Period of Peace, which made him the prime candidate to act as the Brigadier General directing our forces along one of our flanks.

I’m going to try to make three designs based on a resource that deals with the sphere of Shape — I really want us to have two resources instead of going full Inithar with just one, and I feel that this sphere both potentially works extremely well with magnetoshit, dealing with physical properties as it does, and gets us in a very obvious way to the programmable matter dream.

Quote
Miracle Metal (Sphere: Shape)
Miracle Metal (so named because its discoverers were griots that rather wanted to make a point) os a shocking material that was only recently discovered... or, at least, which was only recently discovered to be useful. An extremely difficult metal to smelt, what is now called Miracle Metal was found in small quantities all the Askian Savannah near its rivers, particularly in the bed of the River Konoo, and was called many names in Askia’s many languages. Until the industrial era, it was nothing more than a precious, pretty, glossy black metal... not due to rarity of the material (and indeed nobody bothered to try to exploit major deposits) but simply due to how incredibly difficult it actually was to extract and smelt the metal. Though a process invented in the industrial period made it far easier to do so, it was ultimately judged as not necessarily all that worth it; the substance was still basically steel-like in its qualities, a little harder, but not magnetic... a property much less useful with the command that Askians already had over the magnetic qualities of metals.

What made Miracle Metal suddenly a MUCH bigger deal, spurring exploration for the substance, was when a team of griots a mere 6 years ago running material conductivity experiments abruptly discovered that when exposed to electric current, Miracle Metal suddenly and violently flowed into another shape. After the whole Lantarkifume thing cemented itself in history, the griots this time were less shocked (literally and figuratively) by the results of running an electric current through a thing and getting sudden results, and discovered the properties of the substance: it “holds” two different shapes, and when exposed to an electric current, it switches between them. These shapes can be altered and will still be “held”, which allows the material to be worked and switched at will between two predictable forms.

Quote
Girgiza Miracle Munitions
Going with the modernized artillery form of Askia’s famous magnetoglass cannons, the Girgiza Miracle Munition is a munition designed explicitly to deal with the equally-famous Etroan fortifications (lending clear credence to suggestions that Askia had been preparing to go to war with its neighbor for years). It’s a device at once simple and complex — it’s a long artillery shell, taking advantage of the magnetoglass cannon’s ability to not demand a specific length and shape from its munition, being a railgun with external “rifling”, and composed of two parts.

The first part is the actual Girgiza munition. Composed of Miracle Metal, a battery, and a simple electronic component which flickers a current rapidly on and off into it, the Girgiza munition changes rapidly between two extremely similar shapes. While in the barrel, neither shape protrudes enough to damage the cannon, but once fired, the munition lodges into the enemy target (intended to be their fortifications) and the Miracle Metal flows rapidly and forcefully back and forth between its two shapes, shaking wildly in what it’s lodged into, damaging it and drilling into the wall or roof of the fortification it’s hit, stopping either when the battery runs out (and, as the current that switches Miracle Metal need not be powerful or high-voltage, this actually will be a while) or penetrating through into the insides of the fortification and sort of just shaking there inert while the second part of the shell does its job.

The second part of the shell is a Lantarkifluid grenade on a timer. As it turns out, having one of those detonate inside of your fortification/fortified area really sucks.

Quote
[insert start year here] Maimaita Automatic Rifle
An automatic or semi-automatic rifle is a surprisingly difficult thing to do with a magnetoglass rifle - given that the guns, though breech-loading, just dropped a bullet into the magnetoglass part of the gun, and given that magnetoglass rifles don’t produce any gas with which to spur the loading of new bullets, attempts at automatic mechanisms either attempted cycling mechanisms that were often unwieldy and fragile, prone to breaking in cases of jams or knocks of the gun, or involved just uncontrolledly dumping an entire magazine into the rifle, which sometimes actually knocked over the poor bastard holding the gun.

Miracle Metal provides an easy and simpler solution, hence the Maimaita. In the Maimaita, holding down the trigger actually completes a circuit between a battery in the gun and the loading mechanism by the spring-loaded magazine, which switches on and off at a metered rate. As the loading mechanism consists primarily of a piece of Miracle Metal, this switches its forms at a quick but steady rate — one form is that of a small plate blocking the breech, the other is that of that plate no longer blocking the breech but being gently curved against the wall of the magazine to catch and hold the next bullet in the magazine as it slides down. The transition from the second form to the first form pushes the held bullet into the barrel as the plate uncurves and tilts into a shape perpendicular to the magazine, thus firing it, whereas the transition the other way cleanly grabs the next bullet as the plate tilts and curves against and under it. This ensures that bullets can be fired at a consistent rate, with few jams if the magazine is actually loaded in any way that isn’t batshit insane, and absolutely without accidentally firing more than one bullet,

As the Maimaita itself is fairly short, sacrificing some accuracy for easy usage in tight spaces, it’s a vicious and terrifying weapon to face in close quarters, such as in trenches, or oh gee look, coincidentally in and around the fortifications that the Etroans love so much, allowing for quick and controlled bursts of fire into one’s foe.

(Soldiers are instructed to keep the Miracle Metal mechanism in its flat form when the gun is unloaded, as it does protrude from the un-loaded gun in its curved form, where it would reach into the magazine. Though Miracle Metal is quite hard, if it is unnecessarily protruding and takes a sharp impact it CAN bend. Thankfully, there’s little reason for this to actually happen, and damage in the flat form is both MUCH harder without the protrusion and also less disastrous.)
This can also probably be an easy basis for a machine-gun in our starting armory, I’d imagine.

Quote
[Insert Start Year Here] Dangelo Miracled-Armored Car
The Dangelo is a reasonably simple armored car, converted from a particularly powerful civilian car (a Sundiata Motors model, actually), with 4-6mm of armor placed in plates on an around the car, giving it an angular silhouette. As 4-6mm is a pretty damm light amount of armor, it can still haul ass relatively fast, at around 55mph, and it even has room for a squad weapon (cough, please let us put a MG in it if we get one, cough) to be fired out the front. This is a pretty unremarkable light armored car, matching worldwide experiments with such a concept... or at least it would be if not for the nature of the armor.

See, the armor is Miracle Metal, rather than steel, and while the base form of the material is flat against the car, each plate’s second form is bulged out from the car in a round manner. Under the armor (or at least right under it in its flat form) is a piezoelectric material, and whenever a bullet high-caliber enough to normally penetrate the armor strikes it, the force translated to the piezoelectric material (and probably some other circuit construction) causes current to run through the plate, causing it to violently bulge outwards as it shifts forms, abruptly hitting the bullet with a large amount of force diagonal to its flight and also changing the angle of the struck armor mid-strike, diverting a LOT of the bullet’s force.

Ultimately, this allows the Dangelo to deflect more powerful projectiles than its very light armor should allow... such as the rounds from the Etroan sniper rifle, without sacrificing any of its speed.

Though a future vehicle could very reasonably have a circuit and switchboard system to restore the armor to its ready form with a flick of a switch, as an armored car on its own is very experimental and still primitive, the armor is just reset back at base between battles through applying electrodes briefly to each bulged plate.

Siege Tool

The Siege Tool is a multipurpose trench shovel-like tool meant to be part of the standard-issue kit for every soldier deployed on the battlefield. The tool itself totals 50 centimeters in length. The base of the handle contains a battery connected through the handle to the Miracle Metal spade head of the tool. A steel cap at the bottom of the handle can be unscrewed to access a button that completes the circuit between the spade and battery. This induces a "metalmorphosis" that changes it from "Entrenching Tool" to "Melee Weapon". While the spade can be devastating in it's own right, it's crafted more for the purpose of breaking up and moving earth. A variety of form-2 variants for the Entrenching Weapon are in production, with the mattock, spike tip, axe head, and mace head being the most common.

The battery is also an improvement upon current iterations of power supply. The Magbattery is considered a nickel-magcad battery, or NiMCad for short. These batteries have extremely high power-to-weight ratios and can provide power over an extended period of time even when sustained thanks to the Magnetglass-Cadmium alloy utilized in it's construction. The alloy is created in a manner to align the magnetglass in the batteries to it's "positive" side, marked by a series of chevrons around the positive end to clearly indicate it to the layman/stressed trooper.

EDIRT:
Iron Paths

Iron Paths are cylinders of Miracle Metal with a small metal box containing a power supply and activation lever. When the device is activated a current is sent through the Iron Path that causes it to metalmorphosize into a plank-like shape. Iron Paths can be triggered again to revert back into their cylinder shape. A pin keeps the small lever (not unlike a shutoff valve) in place to prevent accidental metalmorphosis. The Iron Paths are meant to be used as ramps, makeshift roads, walkways in dangerous terrain, crossings over gaps, really anywhere firm flat ground is desired. The planks are rated to withstand the weight of horses, carts, and crewed weapons, not to mention infantry.

The power supply, a battery, is also an improvement upon current iterations models elsewhere.

Hate to say it, but I’m not terribly impressed by either design, MoP... they feel like things that could be done in revisionsover the next couple of turns, rather than good designs to introduce and show off Miracle Metal.

Illusium (Sphere:Light):
"Askian Desert Glass" has always puzzled mankind. This strange substance, found in the depths of the dessicated wastes, distorts light in ways other glass doesn't. Ancient wisdom informed us this is due to evil spirits. More recent wisdom postulated that the unique mineral composition results in an irregular internal structure that diffracts the light in unpredictable ways. The most recentest of wisdom, however, is that it probably has something to do with high concentrations of Illusium.
Illusium is an inexplicable material, the existence of which eluded humankind for millennia, and the refinement of which eluded them until very recently. It can be extracted from certain areas in the Tu Desert relatively easily, however refining it into a usable state requires a considerable amount of industrial activity, necessitating the establishment of large refineries. Once refined, Illusium can be used to manipulate light in ways previously considered impossible. The most straightforward application being 'meso-scale induced photo-permeability'; a technique whereby, through the application of an electrical charge to a properly prepared piece of Illusium, all matter within a defined area becomes more transparent. Early testing enabled Griots to use a 1cm Illusium crystal to reduce the opacity of matter in a 4cm radius by 10%; theoretical models, however, predict far more impressive feats.

Quote
Zobe Self-Propelled Stealth Generator:
There are two ways not to die on a battlefield; survive getting shot, or avoid getting shot. And while there are some radical thinkers who have proposed vehicles that can do the former, we here in Askia have no use for such ludicrous notions. No sir, we'll take the far more sensible second option, and make an invisible vehicle.
The Zobe starts with a fairly standard four-wheel truck, capable of good speeds on road, and acceptable speeds off road. It can carry some men or materiel, but this is not the focus. The focus is the large Illusium crystal mounted within, which is connected to batteries charged by the vehicle's engine. The crystal is manufactured such that, upon activation, it renders the entire vehicle plus an additional two metres to each side and above (but not below) largely invisible (not entirely, but sufficiently transparent that it requires considerable effort/luck to identify them from a distance).
While it is safest to use while stationary, the Zobe can move while cloaked, to which end everything in the cabin has (the equivalent of) a braille label, and many systems provide audio feedback. Driving at night is not recommended, as the headlights will not work properly with the cloak active (the bulbs will still generate light, but the reflectors will not work. Plus, disembodied lights travelling down a road may raise suspicion)
The standard setup has the Illusium providing the aforementioned "vehicle+2m to each side and above" cloaking field, but other setups are relatively easy to create- for example, having the field offset so that it covers 4 metres to the left and none to the right, allowing larger pieces of equipment to be hidden.

I feel like stealth could be an interesting path to go down, while the sphere of 'Light' offers many other avenues in the future.

Unit - Askian Corp of Engineers

The Askian Corp of Engineers are soldiers trained further than their peers in the art of fortifying an area and effectively deploying obstacles and hazards. The Askian Corp of Engineers deploys equipment similar to our standard forces, slightly modified by the use of Miracle Metal. Currently the only specialized equipment we make for our ACEs are the Pocket Plank and Rapid-Deployment Wire. The Pocket Plank comes as a Miracle Metal rectangular prism with a single-use activation mechanism that transforms it into a Miracle Metal plank. The plank form of the Pocket Plank has slats that allow Pocket Planks to interlock with one another to create larger barriers, walkways, walls, or whatever else they may be needed for. The sides that will expand outward are clearly identified to help prevent unfortunate accidents. The Rapid Deployment Wire is a pipe of Miracle Metal pre-deployment. A single-use activation mechanism provides enough power to force the pipe to undergo metalmorphosis. The deployed form of RD Wire is similar to barbed wire, deployed in loosely wound loops in the direction of each open end, with sharp metal points jutting out all along it.

I feel like the Barbed Wire could shift shape continually and thus both be more brutal and be much harder to clip rather than just deploy rapidly, and an edit to that effect would be cool,, but I DID say I would vote for plank with barbed wire.

Since the consensus seems to be for doing Miracle Metal in some form, I will give up on Illusium. However, I feel that the engineers are a waste of a design. A plank and some barbed wire is a revision-tier action at best. Of the Miracle Metal proposals, I feel that the Maimaita has the best combination of utility and practicality.

Lethal Askian Trap Ensemble

Asynchronous warfare has existed since more advanced civilizations descended upon the rich lands of civilizations living seemingly centuries behind their own. Askia has had it's fair share of asynchronous warfare throughout The Troubles as those wishing to reinstate the supposed bloodline of Chijindum combat the Chijindate. While the Askian forces have widely been successful in their fight, there are a handful of things that Askians have adapted from their brothers-turned-enemies. Rebellious forces have made particularly good use of lethal traps to deter rapid movement and inflict psychological as well as physical damage on our soldiers, but the Askian state has the means to make these traps even more frightening.

By using Miracle Metal we can create traps that are not only violent and lethal, but are also capable of being self-resetting as long as their batteries hold charge. Three traps in particular see use in Askia's attempt to develop defenses against invading enemies. They are as follows:

Wall Trap: A vertical plate of Miracle Metal attached to a pressure plate that triggers at partial depression. As the plate connects the circuit on the depression the Miracle Metal undergoes a sudden change and a series of long spikes shoot horizontally over the area the pressure plate resides. When weight is lifted off of the pressure plate it briefly completes it's circuit again and reforms into a sheet of metal against a wall (or other suitable vertical surface).

Floor Trap: A similar but somewhat simpler variant of the Wall Trap (in that it needs less set-up), the Floor Trap has the Miracle Metal double as the pressure plate. As with the Wall Trap, the Miracle Metal is triggered at partial depression so that lifting weight from the Miracle Metal plate causes the spikes to reset.

Wire Trap: The Wire Trap is a smaller trap than the other two consisting of a thin wire of Miracle Metal loosely connected between two points, usually posts or stakes, though only one end is required to be a post as it holds the circuitbox at the end of the wire. Once the thin, light wire is tugged past a certain threshold a trigger in the circuitbox sends a charge into the wire and forces rapid metalmorphosis into a highly taut wire the same gauge as the thin wire everywhere but the ends near the posts where the Miracle Metal concentrates. Wire Traps are initially installed in their taut form before being loosened by a button on the circuitbox so that the secured ends of the wire are the proper distance apart.

Casus Belli: Foreign Aggression and Subversive Actions

Rebels are a persistent problem within Askia, but one that the state has been able to manage suppressing and eliminating threats to national unity. This changed dramatically in the past couple years as insurgent cells have found themselves better trained and armed than anticipated, and beyond what should reasonably be possible without external aid (according to government intelligence and estimates).

So obviously Askian state intelligence agencies looked into the money trail leading from a number of extremist factions. Their independent unpublished findings draw a clear line from the arms and training rebels are acquiring to our border rival of Etroa. While some citizens could question the legitimacy of such claims, no independent agencies within Askia exist with enough strength or resources to refute the claims.

After proclaiming their findings and presenting evidence to their allies, it was decided to end the threat of Etroan aggression on the isthmus. Askians were nothing if not fiercely protective of their way of life, and even if there were disagreements with what exactly that meant, Askian factions were not willing to let a foreign power play puppetmaster with their future. After all, it would only be a matter of time before Etroa would take advantage of the turmoil they were definitely causing and impose their own will onto the people.

----------------

The writeup is intentionally written so that it is possible that Chijindate is at least partially responsible for recent issues so as to make an enemy to unify the people against. I'm leaving the exact interpretation up to twin since she's got her own ideas and also Etroa's casus belli to work with.
