Constantly knocked over (not in combat) in fortresses?
« on: November 29, 2019, 07:17:33 am »

I am finally getting the hang of adventure mode (I think...) and having a lot of fun... but one thing is starting to get more tedious than anything, and that is that it seems like every other step I take in a crowded fortress, I end up on the ground. I put away all my stuff in a back pack, thinking that might intuitively help, but it doesn't seem to. Is it the cats bumping into people that knocks them down? I'm not really sure what else in the announcements could explain it. Is there a way to avoid this?

you can fit a surprisingly high amount of beings into a single tile, however, at any given time if more than one being is in one tile then only one can stand, the others have to kiss the floor if they wanna be on the same tile.
And no, the player has no priority in this, its just yet another being of many. If you want to force them all to lay down at all costs then take a warhammer and smash their kneecaps.

I'd say that's something that should, in my opinion, be changed. It's just annoying, and not really realistic or adding anything if infinite beings can be in the same tile. Maybe if there were a certain threshold of beings in one tile reached this should trigger, but not just 2 or more. I've never fallen over because someone else was standing in the same 5 foot space as me in a crowd... Anyway, is there a DFHack or any other method to remove this behavior?

Oh brother, back in the day you had to manually make your character lie down and crawl through people's legs.  What we have now is a sort of improvement - the convenience of being knocked down. A bit silly, sure.

Some ways to mitigate it without DFHack - set your crawling speed to the max and it'll be similar to your walking speed, which is the biggest annoyance. Avoid very noisy areas unless you need someone or something, the flood of messages, especially when slowed, is the real annoyance. Otherwise, there's not much to do about it, unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip on crawl speed! That does mostly take care of the most annoying aspect of the issue, and is the kind of advice about unknown unknowns for newer players I appreciate on these forums. :)

I don't mean to sound entitled in complaining about something, I know I am owed nothing and it's just a game and I a new nobody in its community... but wow, that background about having to have laid down and crawled manually before, yikes. In fortress mode I expect for there to be things that are tedious, but still fun, due to managing possibly hundreds of dorfs and animals, but I had not run into anything as annoying as this in adventure mode up until now, and I suspect seasoned players know of situations potentially even much more annoying. This is a game that tracks the molar mass of objects, after all, so you'd think it could track the spatial relationship of objects in close proximity to each other too :P, but no matter, the crawling speed trick really helps!
