I just watched this episode of the debates, and it has a lot of parallels with Dwarf Fortress.  One of the reasons given for why we couldn't ever simulate a universe like ours is because of the lack of memory and processing power.  But that got me thinking - what if the speed of light in a simulated universe was just dramatically slowed down, as well as the other interactions.  This would reduce the computational requirements of such a universe. 

One day, might the Dwarves themselves be contemplating whether or not they are in a simulation as well?

Toady better be careful. One bug in the code and they'll bring down the internet. Or use it as a base for their future invasion of Earth. Nobody tell them how magma really works. Or physics in general, for that matter...

The dwarves do not even exist when we are not there to look at them.   

That is an argument against the Universe is a Simulation Idea.  Things in programs do not actually exist objectively in the form they appear to us, so we cannot *be* a simulated person in a simulated reality because the appearance is separate from the reality.  The 'reality' behind the appearance is a spreadsheet setup with numbers and the reality behind that is just pure meaningless numbers.
