Compressing names as is the status quo is not satisfactory because it makes it harder to search for dwarves unless you get their name from somewhere it is not compressed. 

In a related issue, name compression also compresses the (travelling) indicator in the military screen and on titled dwarves compresses it away completely. 

I would suggest first discarding titles, then compressing the profession and other indicators like (travelling) to a minimum of three or five characters then just truncating the name so the compressed profession and other indicators fit.  There may be other solutions like making non-name information its own field.
