Year 1Imagine two player are playing: Azriel and Baal. Azriel chooses the god of Good and Order, with a pink border, Baal chooses the god of Evil and Fire, with an orange border. Azriel chooses Expand as his first action. Baal chooses Build as his first action. Before play begins, neither has an castle, so are tied in turn order. Azriel's Divine Number is 5 (1 good+4 order), Baal is 8 (2 evil+6 fire), so Azriel plays first.
Azriel places claims and build a castle on 119 (he can pick either plains or clouds, as both are their favoured terrain). He then has two actions, but is limited to Expanding and Building. He chooses to Expand once, moving to 120. Then he uses his free Expand (from his Selection Bonus) to take 121. Then he uses his second action to build a Heavenly Spa on 121. He then picks Build as his selected action for Year 2.
Baal's only favoured terrain is lava, so he picks 45 for his starting castle. Then he expands once to 63, then to 84, then he uses his free building (from his Selection Bonus) to build a Punishment Factory in 84. Baal chooses Recruit for Year 2.
Year 2Azriel starts first again, and can choose actions out of Recruit or Build. He builds a Castle for free in 121, as Clouds are also his favoured terrain, and then recruits. He Recruits one Angel, which he places in 120. He then has another action, but there's no legal action to make so he passes. He doesn't like how close Baal is getting so he picks Wall for year 3.
Baal builds a Happy Hunting Ground, then he takes Recruit, which allows him to take up to two beings. So he gets a Fae and a Devil, placing them in 63 and 84 respectively. He could ordinarily recruit another being as his selection bonus, but he hasn't spent any of them and his buildings are full, so he passes. He decides he wants to get closer to Azriel, so he picks Expand for year 3.
Year 3Baal is now going first, as Azriel has more castles than him. Baal can Expand or Wall: he's going to Expand of course. So he Expands to 101 and 102, and uses his free expansion to take 103. No way Azriel can protect all those terrains! He picks Conquer for Year 4.
Azriel has three actions now with his second castle, plus a free use of Wall. Unfortunately, there are 5 borders with Baal's land. He thinks it might be a good idea to wall himself off in the corner in safety, so he Expands to 118, spends his Angel to expand again to 117. Then he Walls 118|101, 119|101, and uses his free wall on 119|120. Finally he picks Domain.
Year 4Baal is up, he can Conquer or domain. He spends a Fae to ignore the wall at 118|119, then he Conquers 118. Because he selected Conquer, he gains 118 immediately rather than at the end of his go. So he continues the conquest. He spends a Devil to Conquer 117 for free. He has one more action, but it costs two actions to take a castle. He could conquer 120, but Baal instead uses his Fire Domain action to firebomb 121 (from 103, a lava tile adjacent to 121), destroying the castle. He picks Conquer, for Year 5, aiming to finish the job.
Azriel weeps a single tear. He's back down to one castle, and surrounded by the enemy. He had picked Domain, but that was foolish, it gives him nothing useful to do. He wants to Conquer his land behind the wall back 118, but can't take 117 because he didn't begin his turn adjacent to it (and doesn't have the Conquer selection bonus). So, he then takes 103 and calls it a day. He picks Wall for Year 5, knowing he'll go first and be able to take back 117 and then hope to close the gap...
