check inventory
Inventory:
You are wearing cargo pants and a collared short-sleeve shirt.
You have socks and boat shoes on your feet.
You are wearing a tan boonie hat and sunglasses.
In your pocket are a note, keys, a cellphone, wallet, knife, and a tiny bottle of sunscreen.

You remember the note had a checklist on it!  You hastily read the note.

Read note:
The note is a checklist.  It is dated today and says:
      beverage
      flowers
      chocolate

Written at the bottom of the note, is the name of the island park you are to meet your lover on, and a meeting time: 1000h.

Oh no!  You forgot to bring the beverage, flowers and chocolate!  They are in your car, parked at the marina parking lot.
If you hurry to get them, it will take about 12 minutes.
You are certain you can make it to the park on time if you go get them.
You must make a decision.  You can either:
Go to your car, get the items, then come right back.
or
   Ignore the items.

Set sail
You will need to cast off (untie the docking lines) and then start the outboard motor first.

>remember way to the park
You have made this trip before, and you recall the steps:
Once you are out of the dock, you need to leave the marina to the open water.
Once there, you should switch from the motor to the sails.  Then you need to navigate to the island.
Once you are near the island, enter the marina there.
Then go to the guest dock and secure the boat.
Then, go to your ultimate destination, the park.
(the park is within walking distance from the marina)

>open locker
   Opened.

>take life jacket
   Taken.

>wear life jacket
You decide to put the life jacket on after you finish deciding wether or not to run back to the car.
You put the life jacket on the wheel for now so you can't possibly forget it.

>close locker
   Closed.

It is now 0636h.

I forgot something earlier.  :-[
>look at boat
A magnetic compass is set next to the wheel.

Go to your car, get the items, then come right back.
You jog through the docks to the marina parking lot.
You grab all the items from the car.
You lock the car and head back.
A pelican lands on the far-side dock.  Good old pelicans.  You feel happier.
   You board the boat.
You stash the items in the under-seat locker and secure them so they don't get knocked around.  You close the locker.
You put on the life jacket that was left on the wheel earlier.

It is now 0648h.

We should make sure the boat's radio works before we set sail, then remove the moorings and set sail.

We should make sure the boat's radio works before we set sail, then remove the moorings and set sail.
There is a radio in the berth.
You open the hatch and climb down into the berth.
You turn on the radio and listen to the weather report for the island.  The weather is clear with steady wind; good.
You tune to the frequency of the harbor master at the island marina and ask about the status of the guest dock.  The harbormaster reports that there is plenty of space.
You leave the radio tuned and listening to the marine frequency in your area.
You climb out of the berth and close the hatch.

Climbing off the boat to the dock, you untie all four mooring lines and put them on the boat.
The boat is now floating free in the slip.
You climb back onto the boat.

To leave the dock, you will have to start the outboard motor, then steer out of the marina.

Go get the items.
Do you mean the items in the berth?  We got the stuff from the car.

>start motor
The old outboard coughs and sputters to life.

>clip jacket to bimini top
You are now secured to the vessel.

>motor to marina
You back the boat out of the slip, then turn the outboard to make the boat point past the docks.
Slowly the boat picks up speed.  You now have steerageway.  You turn past the docks to go out the gap in the breakwater.

>motor to open water
Past the breakwater, the chop rocks the boat gently.  You are now in open water outside of the marina.

>turn off motor
The motor turns itself off, unexpectedly.  Good thing you won't need it again for a couple of hours.
You decide to set the sails before messing with it.

>use sails
Go to foredeck
You are now on the foredeck.
use sails
The mainsail hasn't been operational for some time, due to a broken halyard.
However, you are pretty good at sailing with the jib alone.
You set up and unfurl the jib.
The boat lurches ahead as tremendous forces seek equilibrium.  Good thing you are clipped in.

You are in open water.
Heading:   unknown
Course:   not set
It is now 0711h.

I looked it up, and here's some boat anatomy for people like me who don't know much about it:

And I think the halyard is a rope used to raise the mainsail.

"Heading" is the way the actual boat is pointing, and I think "course" is the way the boat is actually moving, which can be different than the heading depending on the wind and current.
