Ctrl-F5 is hard-reload. This can sometimes be necessary to get pages to reload all resources properly.

Try to copy and paste the image url into the browser bar to make sure you have a working link too.

Another thing to check would be whether where you are linking the picture from allows cross-domain origin, i.e. hotlinking. Another thing to note is that if you go to a website and see the image, then use it on a forum, other forumites might not be able to see the image. You can see the image (even in the forum) because it's already in your browser cache, from the original domain, however if the original site blocks hotlinking, then other forumites won't be able to view it. Clearing your browser cache can reveal the problem.

To add on and answer the question in your title, Imgur does work, but you have to make sure you have a direct link to the image and not a link to a gallery webpage.  You can tell that it's an image because it goes "https://i.imgur.com/JlBxUfO.jpg", where the JlB... is a randomly-generated identifier: note the image extension at the end specifically (png, gif, jpg, more rarely jpeg), and Imgur also uses the "i." subdomain for all of their image direct links.  Another note is that you may need to manually change "https" to "http" at the start: the forum software doesn't really seem to like the former for some reason, if I recall properly.

EDIT: Just tested with my own.  It definitely doesn't like secure HTTP.  If your URL has an "https" at the start, you definitely need to change it to "http".

You can also... not... use imgur, heh. Upl.co's been my go-to for a while. Generally with avatars I'd recommend using your own upload rather than trying to piggyback off someone else's, if you're thinking about just shoving some random picture's link into the avatar address box whatist. There's a fair amount of finicky stuff that can bypass.

Aye.  Reelya's is a good example of that in this thread, since it's 404'd now that the entire website backing it died. :P Also, more self-centeredly, some webmasters will retaliate by forcing redirects to some...ah, not-exactly-worksafe images, as the infamous story of the reaper image has gone.  More generously, it's also stealing bandwidth since they're paying for the data traffic every time someone sees a post here, which I and some others would consider a bit rude.

EDIT: Is Upl.co any good for organization?  I mostly transferred to Imgur in a mad rush in the wake of Photobucket's sudden demise (fair's fair, I transferred to Photobucket from Imageshack in the same way, and from SilentWhispers to Imageshack likewise) just to keep things visible, but their galleries are a bit awful for keeping images organized.

I have no idea, tbh. I don't even have an account or whatev', heh. It's been pretty solid for the simple/small stuff I do with pictures, but I don't do super much on that front, so... yeah. It's easily one of the least painful image upload services I've interacted with for straightforward/one-off screenshot uploads or whatever, though.

It says it offers folders, and the easy-upload reminds me of Imageshack.  I'll give it a whirl, then.  Thank you. ^_^

If you're using imgur, you'll probably need to take the "s" off of https://<your image URL>. I don't know if it's an issue with these forums or what, but a few years ago the regular HTTPS: links from imgur stopped displaying my avatar pics here, specifically.

Really wish Toady would make these forums use HTTPS. When DF hits Steam, there's gonna be a lot of new people here and I'm sure of them would be thrilled to know the traffic here is unencrypted.

As we're suddenly talking about these.

So many ideas for avatars (that I haven't used in other places), so little time. One day I might do it here. To link to the discussion (elsewhere, but touched on here) of upgrading the forum, I'd like it for on-site image repository (either straight to Profile or as a forum/PMs post attachment that can be linked to as we currently select an off-site host).

Then I just need to design just the right animated .gif to fit within the site-limit for filesize and dimensions so that it doesn't get refactored as static. ;)

And, honestly, I wouldn't make it annoying like most of the broken .gifs are. But, until then, I know quite well why I'm still without a working avatar after so much time. (i.e. a particular form of perfectionism)

I tried to set my avatar but it doesn't seem to work no matter how many times you reload
