Speaking of !!!FUN!!!
does anyone have advice on deck building? I'm just not sure how to start building around a small set of cards you want drawn.
While I don't claim to be an expert or anything, what I do is take a theme, then build around it - I'm rather proud of the current deck I've been running: I just went 4-0 with it on the "2-wins in a row" XP event that's currently running.

This one's theme is killing and creating creatures. I started with that base, taking Corpse Knight (deal 1 damage to opponent when a creature comes into play), Cruel Celebrant (When something you own dies, deal 1 damage to opponent and gain 1 life), Rising Populace (when something you own dies, it gets +1/+1) and Teysa Karlov (if a creature dying causes a triggered ability, it happens twice; also, all creature tokens get lifelink and vigilance). I then paired that with the best creatures I could find that checked those boxes: Orzhov Enforcer (deathtouch, when it dies, it spawns a 1/1 flyer), Ministrant of Obligation (when it dies, it spawns two 1/1 flyers), and Hunted Witness (when it dies, it spawns a 1/1 lifelink soldier). To improve hardiness, I also added in Blood for bones, which allows me to turn a single creature token into two creatures back from the graveyard, one of which goes straight into play.
If left alone, these can quickly overwhelm anything. Of course, since your opponent is rarely so kind as to just sit there, I also added a bunch of removal: Mortify (creatures, enchantments), Take Vengeance (creatures), Prison Realm (creatures, planeswalkers), Bounty Agent (anything legendary) and Kaya (creatures - even ones with hexproof).
I've then got some cards that usually end up being "win more", but have pulled my ass out of the fire a couple times: Revival // Revenge (bring back an important creature from the graveyard or double my life to stay in the fight) and Ethereal Absolution (stronger creatures for me, weaker for opponent (autokilling 1 toughness) ... and, perhaps more importantly, grabbing creatures out of his graveyard to turn into 1/1 flying tokens)
Add in enough land to make it so that I can pretty much guarantee what I need - in this deck, 3 mana (or heck, two mana, as long as it's white and black, in a pinch) is really needed for 75% of it, which is usually long enough to pull that needed 4th mana for Karlov and/or Blood for Bones.
As far as getting what you want out when you want it out of your deck, you've basically got three tools - put more of them in your deck (obvious, but two cards make it twice as likely to be drawn, and four makes it twice as likely again), raw card draw (the more cards you're drawing, the more likely you'll get lucky) and "tutors" - cards that allow you to search for what you're looking for. The deck I just talked about basically runs entirely on the first - I've put in a lot of the cards that I think I'll need. I also cheat a bit - using Blood for Bones, I re-use the same cards over and over, so even if I don't draw new ones, I'm not stuck.
