Ahh... The famous legend of the turtles and the shroom-men...
It is well known that, in the temperate shrublands, there are no lettuce ! No lettuce means no feeding for turtles. They have to rely on eating fungi to survive ! And eat 'em they do !

They'll eat all the mushrooms ! They'll eat us all ! Hide away !!!

As much as I want the turtles to eat all the mushrooms I also want to see what happens in mushroom fortress.

Superdorf, you sneaky villain!

Zombie turtles don't eat 'cos they have to-- they eat 'cos they want to :-X

As the summer rolls in, quiet desperation holds sway in Deleradur.

The bones and hide of the slain packbeasts take new shape under clumsy shroom-hands. Crude armor, intended for the one shroom in Steelsoil with knowledge in the ducking of blows.

It's not much, but together with the woodcutter's axe it just might save him.

Thus armed, the hapless militia commander is sent into the fray. The hatch swings shut behind him.

Swift blows are exchanged…

...and Darål emerges victorious!

The hatch is thrown open. A second attempt at claiming the overland's bounty is made, this time with the militia commander standing guard.

Again too slow! A pair of ravens descend upon the fungal figures, skeletal and sinister.

Darål raises his axe...

...and flees, terrified.
The flapping tormentors are on Urir the armorer in a blink. His flesh tears succulent under their claws.

Spoiler: ouch (click to show/hide)

With a desperate change of heart, Darål wheels back into the fray.

It's too late for Urir.

The grief of the commander becomes blood-fury. The limbs of the dead fly, shatter at the weight of his anger.

A raven claws at his greaves. The bones protect him.

Death and death and death-- tiny skeletons soon litter the ground. Victorious at a heavy price, Darål returns to the earth-dark.

There is sorrow in his footsteps.

Robbers of the dead!

Desperate fury. The pick cannot be allowed to escape.

The bone-dance begins. It is a good dance.

Disaster.

Crawling, the commander finishes off those that remain. Nish the woodcutter scurries to claim the pick.

At last, the hatch may be sealed in earnest.

Desperation.

A family of five! And the skulls of the langurs still lurking about the entrance!

There is no time. The commander is indisposed. The parents must fend for themselves.

To her credit, the mother manages to fell both skulls after they cripple her.

The hatch is sealed. Crutches are prepared.

The all-important pick reclaimed, Atir the herbalist (now sporting a brand-new pecan wood crutch) sets to probing at the aquifer.

Jubilation among the shroom-folk! A passage is found to the good bedrock!

With much relief, a new chamber is marked for excavation. Here will a dining hall be raised, in time.

Desperation.

Darål refuses to move. There is no bucket with which to bring him water.

The surface is guarded, and only Darål has the skill to contest it. There will be no more wood-gatherings.

Only the caravan and its guards can save the ailing militia commander now.

It's a tossup, whether he can survive that long.

This "fortress" seems fun !
Are the shroom-folks super small or what ? Dying to mere ravens is a bit underwhelming...  :P

The fungal matter is known to be quite flimsy.

They're not beings of flesh and bone, therefore, they stand no chance.

Tiny bit smaller than dwarves, yah; maxsize 55000 to a dwarf's 60000. More importantly, they're boneless organisms composed entirely of soft plant tissue-- they break easily, and any damage dealt to their flesh is cumulative and permanent. These guys were never intended for Fortress Mode.

I'm tempted to make some creature tweaks at some point, now I think of it... a healing rate for the mushroom tissue (and a [SCARS] token for good measure!), and maybe a shorter childhood. What say y'all?

Too late for the broken hero.

There is grieving among the shroomfolk. Gently the planter Tecàk carries Darål's remains to a waiting coffin.

There are no bones, in the body of a shroom-- in time, Darål's flesh will crumble away to nothing. For now, he rests.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Life goes on. The caravan rolls by, and a contingent of pack-beasts detaches to make trade.

The hatch is thrown open in reception. Liaison Mistêm scurries ahead to do business with leader Zasit.

Spoiler: Imports (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Exports (click to show/hide)

A trade-guard follows, swift to defend her charges.

Taking advantage of the brief opening, a few Steelsoil shrooms make haste to gather the surface-logs! Safety and wood: it is as much as the struggling fortress could ask for.

Steelsoil has little to offer the merchants from mountainhome. A few fresh-carved pots are swapped for similar measure of silk, as a show of goodwill.

This done, broker Zasit takes his leave.

Horror in the stockpiles!

Restless and vengeful, the armorer Urir looms ghostly over the corpse of miner Atir's four-year-old child. Atir stands beside, paralyzed by grief.

Having regained her faculties, Atir prepares a memorial for the specter— lest it take another of her sons.

Urir will be remembered as a victim… and as a murderer.

Atir's husband takes it upon himself to raise the slab.

The flesh of Shorast is laid to rest by Darål. Together the two will molder.

Atir descends into the earth, to forget her troubles in labor's rhythm.

Only a little ways down, the stone burns warm at the pick--

So close to the surface!

A capturing chamber is prepared, where the living stone is known to be. Smelters and forges will draw here from the earth's fire.

Up above, a second band of migrants makes itself known.

More relatives of the herbalists!

It's not long before a flock of raven-skeletons sights the procession.

Clad in Darål's old equipment, commander Led is sent into the fray.

Young herbalist Goden, nephew of Led, rushes to join him.

Chaos.

When all is done, and the hatch closes again, eleven new caps may be seen in the fragile safe-dark. Two maimed. None dead.

Most are marked for the military-- the maimed are assigned other labors. The fortress erupts in activity.

A strange peace settles over Steelsoil.

Yeah !! Mod-in [scars] and recovery; and make the shroom-men breed quicker.
You may even make them have more than the boring 1 youngling. Let them have 5 at a time (spore reproduction is quite prolific after all)
Go for anything you want really, it's not like there were any rules in this thread anyway...

'Tis done!

Shroom-folk will now accept medical care; wounds and fractures in their flesh close and scar at a rate of 500. Shroom-children reach maturity at the age of five, and shroom mothers will (hopefully) give birth to twins and triplets on a regular basis.

...my laptop ate my DF session  :-\
Will give the new RAWs another spin through Steelsoil sometime tomorrow, all going well!

Like mushroom soup strained through the fabric of reality, a mighty power courses through Deleradur. The flesh of the shroom-folk twists with new life, and the minds of the shroom-folk turn to a new idea. A strange, sudden hope.

Clumsily leader Zasit binds the wounds of the maimed with thread and cloth.

Slowly the weeks trundle by, as the mushrooms go about their duties. Succulent flesh twists under cloth, moving, changing in new and wondrous ways.

Slow but sure… the wounds of the maimed fade away.

Jubilation among the shroom-folk! The cripples walk and work again!

One fine winter evening in the safe-dark, planter Tecàk trills the songs of birthing.

Three fine shroomlings, trills Tecàk! Sons and daughter of their father!

In truth, he would have been proud this day.

Strange doings over the aquifer.

Four fine passageways the shroom-folk sink, by pumps and clay.

Stange doings over the earth-mantle.

Many fine hammers the weaponsmith Rorul prepares.

There is prosperity in Steelsoil.

And here's the save! That was fun. :)

- Food supply will require some micromanagement, moving forward. I've been cooking flour and whatever meat is around, with a well for drinking water. Plump helmet consumption is cannibalism, and should be avoided if possible.

- Smith Rorul's hammering out a brace of hammers for the current militia now. They're unarmored, for the most part. Very squishy.

- The aquifer pierce is... functional, if a bit tangled. Be careful messing around in there-- aquifer is heavy-flow, and will absolutely flood the fortress if you crack it open wrong.

Beyond that: enjoy the shroom-ness. All luck to the next overseer!

(assuming there'll be one)

I have no idea how to fortress.

. . .

Mistake, friend, mistake! To fortress is to live. I live, therefore, I fortress. That's the secret behind it all. It has nothing to do with, you know, mushrooms!

See, you gluttonous fungal hoarders? See, what your teaching has brought upon this world? But I am telling you, you don't have to eat the mushrooms! Those are lies and trickery, spread by false mycoprophets! Join the mushroom indifference movement today!
