Bio: A long time ago, on the front steps of the Romorth University, a crying child was discovered in a basket before the sun had risen. That child was taken in by a member of the faculty, Herman Tiedemann, and he named the child Burhardt. Herman delegated much of Burhardt's early life to the servants who maintained the various facilities, but as Burhardt grew older, he was molded into a scientifically minded thinker by Herman. Burhardt's days were spent either buried in books, sitting in on lectures, or discussing various historical events with his adoptive father. Because of this wide breadth of study, Burhardt is knowledgeable on many subjects, but never reached mastery of anything while still at the university. Unfortunately, Herman fell ill and died soon after Burhardt came of age. Worse, Herman himself was not well loved by many surviving members of the faculty, and Burhardt's request to succeed his father's position and have a place to stay were denied. Burhardt was swiftly ejected, taking what he could carry on his back and a small purse of gold coins left by Herman.

Outside the world of Academia, Burhardt struggled to find a place. The common man needed work done and their bellies filled, or a strong sword arm. Burhardt, unfortunately, knew nothing of farming, hunting, or fighting. Before long, his coin was nearly exhausted, and Burhardt realized that the common man couldn't provide him a method to live. That being the case, he elected to aim higher. He returned briefly to the University. Though there was still resistance to him taking a position, being so young, he was able to secure a letter of recommendation as a tutor and scribe from one of the few friends that his adoptive father had had, Ziyurd Rafnir, an aged researcher of dark magic. With that in hand, Burhardt decided to try his luck with the Royal Family of Lastreodal, and perhaps from there he could find a noble house to serve comfortably.

That did not come to pass, however. Fortune was smiling on Burhardt when King Ingvar appointed Burhardt as Royal Tutor to his two young children, Gunvard and Eydis. From that day, Burhardt devoted several hours of each of his days to not only drilling critical thinking and study skills into the Prince and Princess, but also their letters, numbers, history, and many other disciplines. At most other times, Burhardt availed himself of the Royal Library, ever expanding his own knowledge and expertise, the better to educate the two.

When the King and Queen were both murdered, Burhardt was shaken. Not only were two people whom he'd faithfully served for several years dead, but the once children he'd been tutoring had become the ruling body of the country in the flash of the blade. Burhardt believed that he would once again be set out on his way, but Gunvald suggested that he be retained as a Royal Adviser. For now, that is the position that Burhardt fills. His value in matters of the state is debatable, but his historical perspective could be valuable.

Over the past few years, Burhardt has been reviewing the research of others who have studied the island upon the The Lake Heart, hoping to make a breakthrough in safely navigating the isle for extended periods, but following the death of Ingvar and Eldrid, he has had precious little time to devote to such frivolities.

Bio: Morgan's origins are shrouded in mystery, seemingly even to themselves. They are reluctant to speak about events that occurred before they met Renee Caryle, and even then it can be a chore getting any useful information out of the odd mage. Renee and him have been practically inseparable ever since the two met, as well. They were practically adopted by the family, in spirit if not in name, and Renee deals with Morgan's various... peculiarities. When she was invited to become a retainer for the royal family, Morgan followed; while Morgan lacked in many areas, they were a mage of a fair amount of talent, and such skills were useful enough to justify Morgan's presence.

Personality: Alina is an honest, hardworking, dutiful girl who is just a bit timid and is in a bit over her head in a military unit. She's more at home with her nose in a book than with her feet in the muck, but her devotion to carry on the name of the Crimson Witch pushes her forward even if she doesn't really feel comfortable on the battlefield. That being said, Alina does have a burning desire to practice and refine her craft, and putting it to good use can only help her to grow further, so she's doing her best to not shie away from combat even if it is a tad bit terrifying. Really though, with all these big strong people to hide behind, surely no one will notice the little witch in training in the background, right?

Backstory: In the days of yore, legends say that the first Crimson Witch walked the land after the Black Dragon fell to the Executors and the world returned to peace. Some say that she was the child of one of those great heroes, or perhaps one of their apprentices, while others simply say that she was sent by the Goddess to help restore order after the fall of Ragnarok. Regardless of her true origins, all the stories agree that her extraordinary flames helped to cleanse the land of those who dared to take advantage of the chaos for their own selfish purposes.

And while all stories come to an end, the legend of the Crimson Witch has not. The first Crimson Witch took on a young apprentice, taught her her skills, and raised her to carry on her will once she was no longer able to do. That apprentice became the next Crimson Witch, who then passed down those teachings to her own apprentice, and this chain has continued unbroken to this day. Those teachings have become tradition, and the will of the First has become a duty for her successors to fulfill before passing on the torch to their own successor. And, through an ancient pact made during the civil war that fractured the Kingdom of Lotis, the Crimson Witch is permitted to roam freely throughout what is now the Kingdom of Lastreodal, in return for providing her services in times of uncertainty or strife should the call go out for her to assist.

Young Alina was born an orphan in a mining town within the Kingdom of Lastreodal. Her mother died shortly after giving birth to her, and she never knew her father. And while her mother was not poor, Alina's relatives had no interest in raising a small, sickly babe when they could just take the inheritance for themselves. So Alina was neglected, and soon found herself in the hands of a rundown local orphanage where she spent her early childhood in discomfort once her relatives had enough of dealing with a toddler they had no love for.

Alina's life would change forever one fateful summer day, however, as a group of bandits raided the village she resided in. The local militia fought valiantly, but it was only thanks to the appearance of a mysterious, crimson robed mage that the bandits were routed. The Crimson Witch had arrived to save the day once again. Not that any of the villagers had ever seen her before, but who else would wear such eye-catching robes and wield such furious flames?

The Crimson Witch stayed the next few weeks at the village inn, occasionally making forays outside of the village to track down the bandits' hideout and deal with them for good. During her stay, Alina, too little to be intimidated by the powerful woman wearing such fanciful robes, approached the Witch time and time again. Being so young and a dirty orphan besides, there was little reason for the Crimson Witch to bother herself with Alina, or so the villagers assumed, but the Witch had spotted what none of the adults in town had noticed.

Alina had an innate talent for magic, and a powerful one at that. It was untrained and unfocused, and at such a young age there was no telling whether or not she would have the intelligence to make use of her gift, but the Witch was still young herself, and without an apprentice of her own. It would not hurt to try and teach the girl, and if she did not work out, she could always find another.

So when the Crimson Witch left the town for good, she took Alina with her. Most of Alina's earliest memories come from her time on the road with the Witch. The woman was not always patient with her, and was not particularly well suited for raising a young child, nor was her choice of activities exactly ideal for bringing someone Alina's age along. But she somehow managed to raise Alina with the aid of various inn employees across the Kingdom as they traveled around, and along the way she taught Alina how to use her gift properly.

But the stirrings of the Cult would bring an end to all of this. Shortly after Alina's 13th birthday, the Crimson Witch headed south towards the border where rumors of Cult activity had begun to spring up. Over the next several months, she began to investigate, dragging Alina along as she always did. But unlike before, the situation seemed much more dangerous, certainly beyond the Witch's ability alone to deal with, and as she was considering her options, the news began to spread that the King had been killed by an assassin.

The Crimson Witch received the call shortly after to head for the capitol to provide her services for the young royals until the situation had calmed down. However, she would never quite make it. As the pair began to head north, as fate would have it, a small village they decided to spend the night in on their way north was attacked overnight by the Cult. Alina's memories during this time are a blur, but one memory stands out vividly in her mind. A trail of blood, lit up faintly by the rising sun. Her master, carrying Alina over her shoulder. Blood dripping.

With her master... and with no other apprentices but herself, Alina found herself as probably the youngest and least prepared Crimson Witch in history. But she was still determined to take on the role... her master had... for her, and she wasn't going to let her down! So she headed north, spent what little money she had to get her master's hat and robes fitted for her own much smaller stature, and made her way to the capitol.

Did anyone expect that the Crimson Witch was really just an apprentice mage with a fancy title? Probably not, but they'd called for her, and Alina wasn't about to leave until she'd done what she'd came for!

Bio:
A young woman with dark hair, one eye perpetually shut, and an innately smug expression.

Conchita was born in a brothel in Lastreodal, to a woman of that particular profession.

Her mother claimed her father was no less than Fernand, the royal advisor and assassin; apparently in one of his drinking binges, he'd done the deed and Conchita resulted. At the least, her hair matched, though her eyes were her mother's. Eye, that is - Conchita is almost entirely blind in one eye, and keeps it shut out of habit.

The life of a prostitute isn't necessarily, hard, but it's far from easy, either. Conchita thought of the life she could have if her father recognised her as his daughter, and decided; she'd make the old assassin recognise her, no matter what!

The first time she snuck into the castle, she was eleven years old; she burst out in front of him, demanded he come back and marry her mother properly, and was promptly thrown out on her ear. She was back the next day, and the next - until eventually Fernand, both annoyed and impressed at her ability to avoid the guards, finally agreed to train her and send a sum to her mother if she'd stop breaking into the castle. A few months later, he decided to actually train her properly when he realised the talent she had.

She became a more regular sight in the castle, and Fernand grew fonder of her than perhaps he'd expected - she didn't think the older assassin had ever expected to meet any children of his. Of the two royal siblings, she met them as well, as a natural consequence - and while she got along with Eydis - being a mastermind on various childish schemes and general bad influence - she found amusement teasing Gunvald.

Bio: Fourth daughter of a Cestulon noble family known for their magical prowess, Kyva seems to possess none of that magical ability passed down through the generations. Though she was loved equally by her parents nonetheless, she was never made a priority when undergoing the traditional tutoring with her siblings in the intricacies of magic. In an effort to find her own talents, Kyva took to various other skills, eventually settling on swordplay. Though she also displayed no particular talent in that art, she was hardworking, persistent, and eager to learn. Unlike with magic this was an obstacle she could surmount - with no small amount of effort, she reached and even surpassed her own expectations.

But she also had to look to the future. Though she thought she held no strong feelings towards a political marriage someday, it was unlikely her family had much to gain from hers. Those looking to marry into their family valued more often than not the magical ability they were renowned for, and as always she was aware she had none. Even her parents' actions with her showed that they held no grand ambitions for her future, choosing to send her with diplomatic missions that curried goodwill but were not intended to create any lasting bonds.

It was through one of these missions in her youth that she met Gunvald. She was sent as a member of an expedition to Lastreodal to curry favor with the royal family, mostly a symbolic gesture of the Crane family's presence as she was too young to participate in most of the proceedings. Given ample free time and a lack of supervision, Kyva wandered off one day and met Gunvald by chance. They met more than a few times (perhaps she was a little too bored and a little too persistent at the time to pay too much heed to etiquette), not in any particular secrecy but definitely not in any official capability. Though she knew who he was - and even a bastard son of royalty was far above her own position - his kind and hardworking nature was endearing enough that she eventually allowed herself to consider him a friend. Inevitably their paths diverged when the expedition ended and she returned to Cestulon.

As she grew older the question of her future grew more pressing. Without any inheritance and not wishing to rely on her elder siblings' future goodwill, Kyva eventually grew bold enough to ask to leave home and strike out a path for herself. If she was ever needed back home, her family would know to contact her.

She traveled for a short while, living mostly by her skill with the blade, picking up odd jobs and learning skills here and there, but not finding anything that she was satisfied making a living of. Eventually, she thought of Gunvald. Though their connection seemed long in the past, she resolved to travel to offer her services to him, probably just for a short while. Part of her wanted to know how he was doing; another part of her knew it could be beneficial to have his favor in whatever she decided to pursue in the future.

That was less than a year before the assassination of the monarchs of Lastreodal. With more political turmoil on the horizon and Gunvald taking on new responsibilities, as well as other... strange happenings, much has changed very quickly. In any case, for many reasons, she still has no plans to leave his service anytime soon.

As a person, Kyva is mostly good-natured and fairly well-learned and well-adjusted. Her swordplay is quick and deceptive, and she relies more on her skill than heavier protective armor, probably somewhat to the dismay of the healers of the court. She is also unfortunately flighty, often unreliable, and hard to get to know. The fact that she has stayed this long in Gunvald's employ could imply at least some loyalty to him, but she doesn't make a habit of thinking too hard into it.

Backstory:

The Carlyle noble family is an old, respected house, one of the great noble families of Lastreodal and closely connected to the royal family and with extensive holdings and wealth… is what they would generally want you to believe. It is an old family, yes, and it does have some land. But that’s about it; it is a house of modest holdings and wealth, enough that some think it’s a moderately successful merchant family rather than a noble house. The founder of the house, Reynauld Carlyle, is in fact a respected figure, who commanded forces alongside those who would come to rule the newly formed kingdom. For his service he was granted land containing an abundance of wealth… but, as it turned out, the gold and iron veins in their land were shallow, and it wasn’t long before the family lost much of that wealth; the efforts of some business-minded Carlyles have managed to keep the family in the black, but over time they’ve lost much of their prestige.

This does not often sit well with members of the family - it leads to high expectations, pressure to perform and to ingratiate oneself with high society. The newest generation of the family was no different. Renee and her younger brother, Kenneth, had such expectations basically from the time they could walk. Often such expectations would breed competition and resentment - and had, among many of their relatives. But the pair were inseparable, spending much of their time together. Their time was often split between remaining home and participating in the traditional combat training of the family, and the castle interacting with nobles. To their parents’ delight, the pair made friends with the princess during this time.

Renee might have been older, but it was her brother who seemed to show the most promise. He seemed to be good at everything he put his mind to, and it was basically a foregone conclusion he’d be the one to take over the family when the time came to pass on their title. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened. Renee, and the Carlyle family in general, keep quiet about what happened to Kenneth and the aftermath. Suffice to say, he was not around anymore. It was shortly afterwards, that certain events led to Renee meeting Morgan, and basically taking them home. They don’t talk much about that either.

In the following years, Renee redoubled her efforts to train, as well as helping Morgan out with, well, life. She was very protective of the new member of the household, and did her best to take care of him even with his various difficulties. Eventually, she got an opportunity to become a retainer to the royal family, specifically the siblings that she and her brother had befriended in her youth. Bringing Morgan (who showed significant magical aptitude) with her, she joined them on their journeys.

Bio: Nuallán was born to a small landed family of glories long past, the owner of an estate on Cestulon that had certainly seen better days. While the Subhne name had once been one of power and respect in the forested area close to Lake Heart, its fortunes had changed decades ago. The then patriarch broke with tradition and spent much of the household's wealth, favors and goodwill jockeying for more land and titles in the halls of power of Shesa. Unfortunately the patriarch was more ambitious than he was shrewd, and the Subhne lost most of their means and part of their land. They were forced to lick their wounds for the years to come while holding deep grudges towards many of the ruling nobles.

Though diminished the family still had their land, and while being impoverished compared to their former selves didn't result in living as commoners, it got dangerously close. The shrinkage of their territory and dire situation meant the family started to watch the common folk more closely, tending to their peasantry with more care, assisting more actively in their efforts and keeping them safer. The situation required innovation. The production of cheese in the nearby caves and wine in the wineyard close to the mansion, both destined nearly exclusively for the family, was ramped up by the disgraced patriarch's wife, who allowed increased access not only to the commoners but also to traders. Leather from local beasts and general foodstuffs were also shipped to Lastreodal, where the estate's production gained some recognition in certain circles. Because of such measures Nuallán was born into a household undergoing a slow and steady recovery process.

Nuallán grew healthy and happy, playing with the children of the house's remaining servants and studying diligently to become a child worthy of his family name. When the time came to take up a weapon and train, his brothers and sisters chose swords and spears to duel and attack from horseback or picked up magic, befitting a line with a fame for being fiery. The boy was the odd one out and ended up falling in love with the bow; its range, its power and the elegance of the movements used to fire an arrow captivated him. He was quick to let loose witty jabs at anyone who questioned his choice of weapon—siblings included—and when immobile targets became boring he started to join the occasional hunting party to bag game and train his archery.

It soon became clear that Nuallán was both confident in his skill with bow and arrow as well as very patient, an odd trait compared to many of his hot-headed siblings that allowed him to hunt properly. He wasn't as good a shot as the experienced gamekeepers and he quite disliked traipsing around in the dirt and mud, but he improved quickly and he'd taken up to hone his archery skills became a true hobby. Unfortunately, his newfound joy was ruined by local disturbances.

Though living in the borderlands meant bandits were a common nuisance, the Subhne lands had become compact and well-guarded after the family's downfall. The emergence of the Cult meant that not only the number of criminals and migrants rose, both escaping from the cult's predations, but game from the forest by the Subhne estate also took a hit due to brigand activity. Having one of his hunting partners wounded by a poacher left Nuallán unamused. He reinforced the militia with his own presence and drafted the hunters into hunting bandits.

Feeling like he wouldn't be free to practice his archery properly until some semblance of peace was restored to the border, Nuallán wanted to go on the offensive and hunt the true source of exodus of neighboring banditry: the Cult. His parents were more levelheaded and, scared by their son's vengeful wrath when he'd always been the calmest of the siblings, decided to send him somewhere safe before he put his plan into motion. The grudge towards much of Cestulon's nobility remained, and in the end they decided to ship off their offspring along with a trading caravan headed towards Alovine, carrying extra amounts of exotic meats, cheeses and wines both as a gesture of goodwill and to keep their capricious son fed. In Nuallán's pocket also went a letter recommending their son to discreet temporary service to any blue-blooded household of the capital in the hopes of keeping him away from trouble. It turned out his family's products were quite well-received at the royal castle...

Details: Despite what's expected from his tall and thin archer's figure, Nuallán has strength in places other than his arms. His hunting hobby means that he's gotten used to climbing, long walks through the woods and maybe running away from ferocious critters if things went pear-shaped (he refuses to admit the latter has ever happened). So used to eating and drinking well the noble archer is, he's likely to have some fine cheese and wine from back home hidden in his quarters and travel pack. He's also a good cook if only because his capricious palate is high-maintenance, though he's only used to making small portions destined for his own plate.

Haughty and confident, it might come as a surprise that Nuallán doesn't belittle the lowborn. His family's past means they created a bond with their servants that's closer than normal for noble families as a survival mechanism, and he's spent most of his childhood playing games with peasant children, which has kept his highborn's inherited superiority complex in check. His snarky comebacks might also sting, but he tends to save anything rougher than teasing for the deserving.

Bio: Nuallán was born to a family of glories past, the owner of a fief in Cestulon that had seen better days. While the Beaumont name had once been synonym with power and respect in the forested area close to Lake Heart, its fortunes had changed decades ago. The then patriarch broke with tradition and spent much of the Marquis household's wealth, favors and goodwill jockeying for more land and titles in the halls of power of Shesa. Unfortunately the patriarch was more ambitious than he was shrewd, and the Beaumont lost much of their means and part of their land. They were forced to lick their wounds for the years to come while holding deep grudges towards the Langris family and its allies, who ruled the council at the time.

While impoverished, the family still had their land, their people, and a burning thirst for revenge to keep them afloat. The dire situation meant the family not only watched the common folk more closely, but took more care of them to ensure they would stay and flourish. The production of cheese in the nearby caves, leather and furs from wild beasts and wine in the wineyard around the mansion, originally destined nearly exclusively for the family, was ramped up by the disgraced patriarch's wife. Both commoners and traders received access to these luxury goods, a good part of which found its way to Lastreodal, where the estate's production gained some recognition. Which was just as well; the family had been so slighted as to prefer selling their fancy products to a rival nation.

As the heir of the family, he was taught etiquette, manners and management, and was sent on trips to both Shesa and Alovine to acquaint himself with the nobility of both countries. Due to his heavier tutoring, he was the child who took the longest to decide on a weapon to dedicate himself to, as well as the one whose choice surprised his parents. While his siblings fenced wielding fine swords or picked up fiery magic tomes, Nuallán was the odd one out and ended up falling in love with the bow; its range, its power and its elegance captivated him. When hay targets became boring he joined the occasional hunting party to bag game and train his archery.

While officially the archer is out on a diplomatic mission to make new alliance and act as the spokesperson of what had now developed into a brand of luxury goods, the actual reason of the mission is supposed to be keeping him out of trouble.

Details: Nuallán is tall, thin, athletic, and quite obviously smug. His hunting hobby means he's used to climbing trees, traveling on foot and running away from ferocious critters when things go pear-shaped (he refuses to admit the latter has ever happened). So used to eating and drinking well Nuallán is, he's likely to have some fine food from back home hidden in his quarters or travel pack. He's able to cook, though the small portions he makes are destined for his own plate, and thanks to his high-maintenance palate he's only used to fine ingredients.

While he is haughty and confident, it might come as a surprise that Nuallán doesn't belittle the lowborn. Bio:

House of Feuermahne, just a hundred years ago, wasn't even a House at all. The family history started with the wealthy merchant Friedrich, who, through trade in silks, furs, musk and alcohol, get himself acquitained with the high nobility of Lastreodal.
The relationship between Friedrich (and later on, his two sons) and the nobility continued, until the noblemen had a few favors to pay off to Friedrich's family.
The collection of aforementioned favors, over the period of just scant few months, culminated in Heinrich (Frederik's only grandson) being promoted to the rank of nobleman (along with surname, Feuermahne, for the family's affinity for red hair). With the strong mercantile base and friendship of few other low-ranking noblemen, the family only grew stronger.

Next came Otto and his beautiful wife, Adelheid, who had six children: Friedrich, Albrecht, Dietrich, Hedwig, Konrad and Evelin. The first five children were either married off to the noble families (Dietrich, Hedwig) or groomed into specific positions within the royal army or the court (Friedrich, Albrecht, Konrad).
Finally, the only one left for them to propel into fortune and prosperity was their youngest daughter, Evelin. Evelin, however, unlike her siblings, wasn't one to follow the lead and instead demanded to be let go, because 'all others are already doing important work, so let me fight for the kingdom along with our countrymen!', but Otto was going to have none of this.
He planned to marry Evelin - for she is nowhere hard on the eye, you know - to one of the sons of his friend. The fire-haired soldier girl was quite depressed about it, until the unexpected happened - the King and the Queen were assassinated, leaving the two royal siblings in charge of things. Very quickly Evelin seized the opportunity to worm an idea into her father's head.
After several stormy discussions and few shouting contests, the elderly Otto finally relented. With the help of few friends in the higher places, 'the grand plan' was set into motion - not only was Evelin going to fight for the country, just as she wanted, she will do so at the side of Prince Gunvard, as his bodyguard!
