Playing with "One arm open"
« on: August 03, 2019, 08:49:38 pm »

Hello my DF friends.

I recently was in a mountain bike accident wherein I fractured my shoulder and clavicle.  I have no use of my left arm for the next 8 to 12 weeks (and a couple surgeries later).

My question to the community is; are any of you living with a disability whereby you are playing DF one handed?  Are there any short-cuts?  Keyboard mappings? Etc that can make my DF life easier?

How does one play DF with one functional hand?

This forum is to put forth suggestions to Toady on how he can improve the game, pretty sure this thread belongs in general discussion.

Sorry to hear about your arm though, hope it gets better soon.

It's actually pretty terrifying to think about having all of your fat melt off into grease because you started sweating too much.

Of course, any suggestions on how to make the game more accessible beyond what players can do themselves are surely welcome right here. There's a whole "user-friendliness arc" coming right up, after all.

("Full mouse support" has already been suggested. Looks likely too, which I guess will help out all the one-handed players).

Whether you are playing dwarf fortress or typing emails/posts... your problem will be the same, you will need to use your right hand for anything your left hand can no longer do.

Remapping keys will just make operating your right hand more confusing. Turning the keyboard toward the right hand might make it easier.

There might be a voice-recognition system to enhance keyboard use, but those are more likely to be less useful for DF since they are designed to recognize full words instead of single keystrokes, and you expect use of your left hand back in just a few months, probably less time than it would take to learn to program voice recognition for DF use.

Consider... reading some books.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
