Head towards the box with the smoke and see what meal the human is referring to. Try to not get detected, if the human sees you, say “no harm” to it

The smoking box does seem like a source of food, but I'm also curious about the anxious man.

Wherever we go we need to make absolutely certain that we can get back here. We don't want to have to leave our Ali behind.

Well, they weren't going to kill you, they were only trying to stun you, they were shooting you with something like a TASER.
Of course you didn't know that at the time. Nor did you know what they were going to do after they caught you.
Just like you don't know what is going to happen with the family you've found yourself in. They might also be a danger. The adults don't seem to like you very much, after all. Or they might not be a danger and this might just be usual difficulties for a family.
Non-violence is almost always an option, but it might not always be the easiest or the best option, it might not always be the option that will lead to you surviving and thriving.

EDIT: BTW, I usually wait for some time or a good number of supporting votes (around 3) before I start writing a post.

Head towards the box with the smoke and see what meal the human is referring to. Try to not get detected, if the human sees you, say “no harm” to it
You quickly cross the bridge, legs bent, staying as close to the ground as you can. You dash from hovercar to hovercar, using them as cover. When you're close enough to the human with the box, you peek around the corner to see what sort of meal he is referring to. You see him holding two sticks that he has used to shower skewer small pieces of burnt meat. The meat smells like real meat, not the fake meat you're used to having. The scent makes your stomach rumble with anticipation. But the quantity per stick is small. You'd need several sticks to satiate your hunger.

There's currently another human in front of the box. He says "two" and gives two grey credits to the man with the meat-sticks. The man takes the credits and gives him two meat-sticks in exchange. As the man who gave the credits leaves, the man with the meat-sticks goes to grab a knife and happens to look your way. You quickly hide behind the hovercar, but he's already seen you, or at least caught a glimpse of you. He starts yelling angrily, he yells several things, you understand "leave". You stay hidden and after a while he stops yelling. It doesn't look like he's chasing you.

Welp, while we're out here, I'm curious...
Find an out-of-the-way spot. Attempt to breathe fire.

I'm not sure why we'd think to do this, but I want to know if we can breath fire too, so +1

while we're at it maybe we can find some rats or something in an alley.

What are we trying to burn?
Anything! Everything!
But at the moment, nothing in particular. We just want to know whether we can.

say “no harm, want meat”
Ehh, that guy seemed pretty fervent about defending his stock from us. Talk isn't gonna get us anywhere with him.

Search for credits, then come back and give them to the man in exchange for meat. We saw it work with the other human

About the fire, without burning humans, try to find an exit area that’s quiet, but close enough so we don’t lose a way to our house. After practicing with the fire, blow it out and return to our house

We need to avoid burning humans, that would cause attention

If we don't find any credits, we should see if we can come up behind the box guy, maybe by gliding?  That might let us gulp down some meat.  Then we run.

Try asking for food. Maybe we can work something out.
