Does that mean it would actually be selected for revision? The Armory is meant to be a long-term design that will be able to keep us fighting even in the cold season. Having that much firepower protecting the bases will also reduce the Pact's ability to hamper us in those areas. I don't think the rifle is quite going to manage taking down floating tanks however. Cripple them, but not take them down entirely.

Well, I meant Embralian vehicles. We can always revise a 50mm onto the Wikiwiki for better anti-vehicle use.

I mentioned sonar because we will likely vote that this next phase. We are currently in the cold season as well, so any adjustments we make for that will be less important, given we will be fighting in hot season for the next few designs if I read correctly.

nope, next combat is against Embral. Pact will be a presence still, but only if we really push into their land.

Edit: we are attacking across the Strait.

A strategic facility design is a good idea, just not turn 1. Although to be blunt, even if turn 1 facility was a good idea, yours wouldn't be. "Effectively invincible bunkers and supply bases" is not something we can reasonably do turn 1. As you describe them, I have serious doubts it would be something we could reasonably do ever, because you seem to think refocyte is immune to physical force, and that freezing over makes it sealed against temperature changes. And if it was revision material, we would have better things to use a revision on on the grounds that we could instead make things that have a chance of working.

That being said, the idea of having resupply and recharge bases / defensive positions throughout our territory is a good one that we could do if we get on the backfoot. It would need to be notably changed from what you propose though. Fair concept, not very reasonable execution.

As to explain what twin means by not physically invulnerable, Refocyte can only absorb x amount of energy, then discharge it. It doesn't absorb all the energy, and can be bent/deformed. Therefore, while it's fairly tough, it is by no means invlunerable, especially as sheet metal.

The main issue with the strategic facilities is that they don't really cover our largest needs right now.
Against Embral, we need to make sure that their subs don't give them a naval advantage, especially with how much investment we've poured into our navy over time. We also will want to make sure that our guns shoot a bit farther if we intend to get into guerrilla and counter-guerrilla combat, which we're suited for, lest we end up on the losing side of ambushes consistently by forces firing from long range and fleeing. The sonar revision does the former, the M2 Haaheo does the latter through its improvement of the firing mechanism, and the Magic Bullets will probably also be nice.

Against the Pact, we're so goddamn far behind that for now there's not much we can do to turn the tide. However, what we can do is build up our basic capacities and start inflicting losses if we come up against the Pact again, and as probably the biggest problem we have with them in any possible engagement as that literally 2 guys in their lighter armor can tank an entire convoy of weaponry, the Magic Bullet and Haaheo should provide us the ability to start damaging their armor. Two dudes tanking an entire fucking convoy should become less plausible for them.

Design Phase, Hot Season 1938 AC

Proposal: M2 Haaheo Heavy Rifle
Quote
The Mark is an 8mm rifle of approximately carbine length, rifled, and with a similar, though slimmer, configuration to existing Refocyte rifles. Where it differs is the firing mechanism. The firing mechanism uses a thick, high purity plate, 6mm in Diameter and with twice as much mass as existing firing caps, and doesn't eject the plate after firing. Rather, once the trigger is pulled, a lead connects to the plate from a battery mounted in the stock, recharging the plate while the loading mechanism cycles the next shot, the firing plate retracting during loading and shifting forward once the bullet enters the chamber to sit against the base of the bullet. A firing pin (also Refocyte) triggers the plate. The loading mechanism captured the added recoil and uses it to actuate, retaining the Semiautomatic mechanism. The lack of firing caps slims down the magazine, and the bullets themselves are held in place in the firing chamber via a combination of thin steel rings around the base of each bullet and high tolerance machining. The steel rings have an external diameter of 10mm, an internal diameter of 8mm, and a flange that is 2mm thick that extends under the bottom of the bullet, with a center hole 6mm in diameter. These rings are ejected by the loading mechanism. The battery chamber is lined with Rubber, and a set of four latches hold the cover in place. The magazine is a vertical, spring loaded magazine built to accomodate the bullet rings. The bullet rings are cast from steel for optimal surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

There are two main ammunition types - a standard lead bullet, and the "Magic Bullet", used for Hardened targets. The Magic Bullet is a high-purity Refocyte bullet that is steel-jacketed up to just short of the tip as to limit direct interaction with the barrel. The Magic Bullet comes with a slightly modified steel ring, covering the bottom of the bullet with a thin layer of rubber. This prevents excess charging of the bullet during firing. The magazines for magic bullets are coated in rubber internally. The rifle has a bayonet loop under the muzzle, and comes with iron sights. Designated marksmen can attach a scope and a bipod for long range combat.

Difficulty: Very Hard
Result: (6+5)-2=9, Above Average

The Haaheo is an attempt by Initharian engineers to both reduce the cost of fielding rifles as well as increase bullet power. It was a success, in a way. A total redesign of the way we handled firing mechanisms was adopted, resulting in a change in bullet and cartridge design. Which was also affected by the "Magic Bullet" project. Somehow we got it to work out pretty well for us.

The Haaheo provides Inithar with a rifle more readily comparable to those produced in other nations save for the whole "refocyte" business. Using a larger plate as opposed to the lower-energy caps means the rounds can be fired effectively out to 850 meters. The 100cm gun is very stock-heavy thanks to the inclusion of a removable refocyte battery within the stock to power the plate between shots. This makes it somewhat awkward to handle when using the bayonet, and it is suggested that the bipod be deployed before firing. A somewhat shoddy 2x scope is also provided, though iron sights are more popular.

The uniquely shaped Haaheo rounds come in two types: standard and refocyte. Refocyte rounds differ from standard lead in that the bullet is made of high-purity refocyte in a nearly complete steel jacket. Refocyte bullets are capable of punching holes (not piercing themselves) through up to 25mm armor and will often cause spalling otherwise.

The Haaheo is indeed a heavy rifle weighing in at 9kg (including bipod). It's also quite a bit more difficult to make thanks to the fine machining involved in production of the ammunition as well as it's safety features (mostly rubber). The final product ends up costing 3 Ore, 3 Oil (Note: this is to make sure the use of rubber impacts cost and not indicative of a gun made of 1/3 rubber), and 4 Refocyte, making them (VERY EXPENSIVE). The Refocyte bullets are treated as one Expense Level above the gun in terms of distribution - currently a single gun has access to Refocyte Rounds. Currently the Refocyte bullets are only available for the Haaheo. If production of the bullets becomes more widespread their pricing rules will be subject to change.

The first engagements with the Salviosi Embralish are right around the corner. You have a single revision to make adjustments to your equipment before taking them onto the battlefield. Good luck!

IT IS NOW THE REVISION PHASE.

The Kona Gun. Strong, reliable, and capable of shelling most positions. Moreover, all that needs to be done is a few adjustments, and placing on a tow-able platform. And we have artillery.

Why stop there though? Adding in proper heaters into the deployment will allow our forces to properly load and fire for quite a while, so long as they have the ammunition that comes with such guns.

I'll leave others to write up an actual design, but we have the basis for artillery already.

Haaheo Rebalancing
The Haaheo is a lovely gun in a lot of ways, boasting better raw performance than any gun produced by the Refocyte-Smith's Fellowship to date (something that has raised some internal debate over whether this can be attributed solely to the refocyte-smith or due to the mixed-nature nature of the Grand Fleet Engineering Group), but it does have a pretty major flaw that inhibits its use as an actual rifle -- the balance is far enough off that it requires a bipod, which significantly increases the weight. Accordingly, the gun has been rebalanced, with the battery placed between the locations of the hands on the gun, and shaped along the gun as to not protrude majorly from it since there's no reason a refocyte battery has to be rectangular or cylindrical. The goal here is to change the gun's center of gravity so as to not interfere with the aiming and firing of the gun, expressly intended to make the bipod no longer necessarily to fire the Haaheo well, both removing its weight and allowing for more mobile usage of the gun.

Wikiwiki gun Trailer

A towable, 4-wheeled, steel trailer, this is a simple design modified from existing cargo trailers. 8 stabilizers - two for each side help keep the trailer steady during the main use of this tool - a 120mm Refocyte cannon turret from the Kaipo'u-Class Battleship, modified to fit on top of the trailer by removing all the armor and one of the 2 cannons, while retaining the rotation and elevation controls. Ammunition is stored in the back of the Wikiwiki.

Operators are advised to keep the Wikiwiki in park and chock all wheels before firing.

Haaheo Rebalanced

The Haaheo is an excellent rifle, with the stock heavy balance being the primary flaw. To correct this, we will move the Refocyte battery (reshaped to be a 2 inch diameter, 1 inch long cylinder) in front of the receiver, mounted under the barrel. This reduces the amount of weight in the stock, and by running the Nickel connection under the wooden grip under the barrel, the connection remains secure. The Refocyte battery is held in place by two latches which release by tightly gripping both sides of the connector. The Refocyte battery is contained in a rubber-lined sheet metal casing, with a small circular glass window inset into the metal (but not in contact with the battery itself) on the side facing the wielder. This feature allows the user to see how much charge is left in the battery. Finally, to improve accuracy at long range, a simple screw is added to allow adjustments to the rear iron sight.

Propaganda Contest: Hakau Sione and the Whistling Jungle

When the fleet left the home islands, among its civilian members (the “support staff”, officially) was a cadre of actors and a film crew or two. The justification for them and their equipment taking up some of the limited berths was “to support the morale of the troops and support staff via entertaining films.” Also, they paid for two extra ships, and brought their own equipment.

While the first productions had targeted their continental enemies as bloodthirsty conquerors who coveted the honorably won and long supported Mainland Territories and the bountiful Home Islands, upon sighting of the Embralian fleet their objective changed. Admiral Vaea requested a change of subject and provided the teams with a few amateur scholars among the soldiers, lacking proper experts due to the assumed lack of Old World nations on Harren.

Their first film attacking the evil Embralians is Hakau Sione and the Whistling Jungle, starring Tavita Peleki and Ailani Kahele. The film follows the heroic explorer Doctor Hakau Sione, of the explorer’s fellowship and a veteran from one of Inithar’s minor wars before it’s neighbors banded together to strike it and one of the best in his field. The adventurous explorer goes further beyond Inithar’s borders than anyone of the age, and discovers a strange foreign land. The people seemed to be ambling along in their jobs without thought, muttering to themselves in an unfamiliar language. They didn’t acknowledge his existence, let alone his questions. Nobody would speak to him for long before he met an attractive young woman who gave him warnings: be quiet and act normal, or else they’ll come. Do not drink the water or listen to the music, or they’ll have you. He could not ask who “they” were before she ran off. In the night, there is a commotion outside of the abandoned building he took as shelter. He hears a whistling noise, and when he looks sees several people, bound and gagged, being taken by men dressed in black with horrific masks that seem to be producing the whistling noise instead of talking.

Hakau assaults them, trying to stop what seems to be a kidnapping, but they get away. One of the men he’d taken down starts screaming, and the townspeople come out and try to mob Hakau - except for one, who instead saves him and helps him hide. He introduces himself as Katon, a member of the resistance and spy for the heroic People’s Union of States. The Embralian empire, through it’s poisonous water and mind controlling music, took this town among many others on it’s borders, influencing them to blind loyalty until they were but drones who existed to serve the emperor. The Sikari that they had just fought had taken most of the rest of his cell, including the woman who had warned him, Caia, for “re-eductation” in the capital.

From this inciting incident the film follows Hakau and Katon’s investigation and pursuit, and Caia’s efforts to remain herself in the reeducation camp. The former find evidence that Embral is preparing for something very dramatic, while Caia stumbles across Harren refugees in the camp who had been interrogated for all they knew. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that Embral is planning to conquer Harren Island and steal it’s resources, first to wipe out the Union and then to conquer the rest of the world and bring them for it’s emperor. The pressure is on when Caia, due to her resisting of interrogation and reeducation, is chosen as a sacrifice to the Wells, a primitive blood ritual meant to give power to the soldiers of Embral. Hakau and Katon manage to reach the staging grounds where the military is being assembled just in time, battling the depraved head of the Sikari, who uses his magic music to mind control Katon to fight his new friend. After Katon is wounded, he manages to fight off the mind control long enough to hold the head of the Sikari long enough for Hakau to kill them both. Hakau then saves Caia and detonates large amounts of ammunition, setting back preparations by months. While it would make him the happiest of men to stay with his new love after bringing her to Inithar, he declares that he must join the military once again in order to battle against Embral overseas.

Being filmed primarily on a ship and in a frozen wasteland, a large amount of improvisation had to be done for sets and props; but many of the civilians helped in the effort, and the highly skilled actors making stunning performances more than made up for it’s limitations. It has been played often in makeshift cinemas aboard the transport ships since the fleet made landfall.

---

My bit for the lore contest. If I've got the time I might do an actual script for one of the scenes. The idea is one of those schlocky propaganda films that countries made in WW2, demonizing their enemies and glorifying themselves and allies.
