IJN Kaga vs HMS Spray and Pray:
DC4 Secondary: 6+1-2 = 5 => 5, hit! Comproll: 7, UC2 Ammo Magazine is hit! 1 Armour Plating destroyed!

The ranging shot turned out to be a highly accurate shot that tore off some armour off Spray and Pray's hull!

IJN Kaga vs HMS Spray and Pray:

DC4 Secondary: 6+1-2-2 = 3 < 5, miss!

There was a sploosh as the shell missed the target by a wide margin.

Basically, you start the fight not knowing exactly how far your opponent is, this manifests in game as a -2 penalty. However, as you fire more and more you can dial in the range more and more.

Simply put, every turn you spend firing erodes this penalty. So next turn you're only going to have a -1 to hit, if you fire (and you must to erode it further).

Thank you. Do you specify that it’s a ranged attack to erode the penalty or do regular attacks also erode the penalty?

Keep shootin' and the penalty will become +1 to hit eventually.

Regular attacks do so. Piratejoe mentioning it was mostly fluff. Note that firing more guns will not erode the penalty faster, but you do need to fire at least 1 gun.

Fire main gun and 1 secondary at the Kaga’s unarmored Bridge Tower, and fire the other 2 secondaries at the armored Bridge Tower
