Winter, 1890, Revision & Refit Phase. The Mk2 is an improvement on the original Mjolnir increasing the range and speed and replacing the black powder for lorem powder for the explosive charge.
Efficacy: 6
The modifications we have done to the Mjolnir are fairly substantial. While a flywheel is quite important, it can only keep spinning for so long before it runs out of steam. Luckily, he have come up with a admittedly convoluted, but still workable system. With the implementation of a more traditional small engine inside the torpedo designed to spin the fly wheel and keep it going, we can increase the range substantially. While the engine is on, the Mjolnir will have a wake, as that is unavoidable with an engine, however we have put in place a useful solution. A timer. After a set amount of time, with the maximum being the largest range the engine can go, depending on the timer which is adjustable before launch, the engine will stop and the fly wheel will continue to do what is needed without giving the enemy a wake to look at for another good 600 yards before the torpedo will run out of power. This little system has increased the range quite a bit, but it does reduce the advantage of not leaving a wake to an extent, it also naturally increases its speed.
We did not replace any black powder with Lorem powder...For one, the warhead uses guncotten, not black powder. And Lorem powder is propellant, a low explosive, not high explosive. Additionally, despite the relative complexity that one may presume comes from the new design, it is not that much more expensive.
with the completion of the light gun project it had been noted that despite having barrels that used less material than the old built-up guns were costing more due to the construction methods used being more time consuming. the goal of the revision is to improve on the manufacturing methods of the barrels to bring down the cost with out compromising the quality of the guns.
Efficacy: 1
Well...We tried to streamline the manufacturing process of the gun barrels to cut down on cost, yet despite our best efforts over some time, we couldn't quite figure anything out, well other than what won't work. There really isn't much else to report other than that the attempts to speed production up failed due to the fact that quality was demanded to remain while at the same time increasing quantity, yet at the very least we know the things we can't do. We might find a way to do it without ruining the quality, but it certainly won't be today.
With new guns seems only prudent that we look into improving the shells as well. the program see about implementing the latest in metallurgy and steel forging techniques allowing for better amour piercing characteristics of AP shells and thinner walls for increased HE capacity for HE shells. Additionally AP shells will have a soft metal cap to help resist shattering against against hardened steel improving armour piercing further.
Efficacy: 4
We quickly and easily went to work putting new shells, with good propellant and better made for our modern guns, to the testing range. And the tests have went well. A few tweaks, such as better steel making, soft metal caps on AP, thinner walls on HE without risk of rupture when firing that would cause the shell to explode...We actually did have an accident with that last one, but we got a good reliable and safer walling for the HE that'll allow us to push more explosives into it for the more soft targets that that ammo will be fired upon. Over all, our work was just fine. Nothing spectacular, but still good.
