Gimli Corvette
A light attempt at a vessel that could engage torpedo boats as we currently lack torpedo's of our own, the Gimli Gunboat was designed around its dual pair's of triple expansion engines, in order to best chase down and kill torpedo boats before they could threaten their bigger Viking cruiser class cousins.
As of now, the Gimli gunboat is estimated to have a speed of 19-21 knots. In order to actually give it the bite necessary to fulfill its role, The Gimli is equipped with 2, single turreted 4-inch guns and 2 turreted 2-inch guns of the current models available to us. In a decision made around its most likely use as a defensive ship, considering the new nature of our navy, The gimli has cut some of its coal bunkers, decreasing the amount of time it is capable of remaining afloat at sea in exchange for a thicker armor, around 1" of protective plating.  It is estimated that the 60-meter length ship will have a displacement in the range of 500-600 Tons.

I am going to vote for the viking, but since we have several designs, I say we build a torpedo for one of them.  Something good to add to smaller classes of vessels and eventually a dedicated torpedo boat.

Mjolnir Class Self Propelled Torpedo

An unguided torpedo that operates underwater with a contact explosive at the front and a propeller powered by a flywheel, based on the American Howell torpedo.  A gyroscope is used to guide hydroplane fins to maintain course and depth.  The front of the tube has a warhead packed with basic gun-cotton and an explosive cap trigger attached right before launch on the front.

Not sure if we should go more advanced?

The Howell is fine. Designed in 1870, so it should be simple enough for us to procure.

Need to get those torps setup first so we can design destroyers and torpedo boats around them next turn.  The capital ship shouldn't miss them too badly.

We only get six action dice a turn (and can save 4 of them), while ship designs take four dice verses normal designs which only take three. Thuis, we can't do the torpedoes and the ship design this turn.

Personally I think we should do the torpedoes this turn, spend one dice on revising something at most, and then save the other two dice so we can do 2 ship design actions next turn with the new tech. Maybe we can revise better rangefinders or armor or something this turn before we make a ship after all...

The big thing is that we are going to need a ship this turn, no matter what. No ship, no funding. Besides, the cruiser doesn't need the torpedoes, and we do have three turns.

No sense in putting the cart before the horse after all.

... but we literally can't build a ship until turn three.  Funding is completely irrelevant until then.

Don't take it personally, but I'm with Happery on this one.
I'd rather nail down the torpedoes and bank enough dice to roll two ships next turn.  Ideally, one could be your Viking cruiser. It'll save us a revision dice in the near future.

The GM piped in on discord. Funding is irrelevent until we hit a shipbuilding turn, which is the third turn. So if we end up making torpedoes on turn 2 we'll be building ships on turn 3 instead of designing a kind of ship that can use them.

I'm only voting for the torp so we don't end up with a tie, anyways, having a torp now keeps us from finding major flaws too late. We don't want to be like the US Submarine Service in early 1942 with every other torp being a dud.

One way or another we'll have plenty of dice to fix that, especially with the traits we picked. Won't be difficult to fix those bugs.

If I voted for the cruiser we would be in a tie, I just want to get through this.

Pregame Design Phase of Turn 1:
Mjolnir Class Self Propelled Torpedo

An unguided torpedo that operates underwater with a contact explosive at the front and a propeller powered by a flywheel, based on the American Howell torpedo.  A gyroscope is used to guide hydroplane fins to maintain course and depth.  The front of the tube has a warhead packed with basic gun-cotton and an explosive cap trigger attached right before launch on the front.
Effectiveness: 5 | Cost: 2 | Bugs: 5
The somewhat amusingly titled Class of self propelled torpedo, the Mjolnir, is a intricate and good weapon. The torpedo is capable of a speed of 26 knots and a range of six hundred yards, packed with gun-cotton with a sturdy and reliable cap trigger. Testing has shown that the torpedo is quite powerful, and likely will disable or sink even the largest ships we can make, and it has also found that even at unfavorable angles, the torpedo will usually detonate so long as it hits the target, unless its at a particularly steep angle.

When it is launched, it keeps its course and depth as intended, thanks to a pendulum and a gyroscope, even with harsh waves, further showings its reliability. Even better is that due to how its powered, it leaves no wake. However, there is a cost. Despite the simplicity of the warhead, the inner machinery connected to the flywheel, along with the gyroscope, makes it a bit more costly than expected, and it needs to be spun up like the torpedo its based on to be able to actually fire, which is a bit noisy, however a few techniques have been done to reduce this noise. Most of the cost for the torpedo would be more for the launcher than the torpedo itself, but, its still cheap for a torpedo, and reliable, even if anything made to launch it might be a bit expensive.

It is now the Revision & Refit Phase of Pre game Turn 1. You have 3 dice remaining to spend on Revisions or Save for the next turn.

I see no need to do any revisions. Ship rush next turn?
