Revision: "Brosh" Ship Retrofits

We shall shake make an effort to immediately replace all our old Tokamak drives on our fleet vessel.  Yeah, that sounds like alot but it's not so bad, especially if the whole modularity thing works out.  Either way, we should focus on the Peitho, Endexix, Hephaestus, and then the ITC if we can.  That may not cover "all" the ships, but it's probably good enough.  It's not like Brosh even goes outside anymore, so how would he even find out?  What Brosh doesn't know, won't kill him, eh?  Just make sure to put his name on it.  That should be enough of a distraction.

Turn 10 Revision Phase: The Network

Modular, Reconfigurable Reactor Formation; or SparkY Tetris
So, the SparkY is a good piece of kit, but we've literally just designed a bunch of ships we wanted to put it in, and apparently that's gonna take a whole load of work. Thus, this particular project is focused solely on making the SparkY more retrofit friendly.

The various components of the drive will be split out and modularised into a variety of equally effective but differing shapes so that they can conform to whatever space restrictions are available on the target ship. The Magnetic Nozzle Assembly will be streamlined, to reduce wastage and thus space requirements. Finally, the requirement for a large supreme of power will be looked at. Does it really need that much, can we crib spare power from the weapon reactors as well as the main reactor?

In short, this will make a SparkY system that is smaller in size and more fluid in requirements,,  allowing us to fit it in all our ships more easily.

The good news is that SparkY 2 works. The bad news is that SparkY Tetris works only if you change the dictionary to alter the definition of "works" to be a bit more generous. Luckily, we've already gotten permission from the greater Network to alter the dictionary like that. We've deployed flamethrower units to hunt down any remaining physical copies of previous iterations of the dictionary to ensure that the evidence is gone.

Oh right, this is the engineering report not the social engineering report. The Tetris setup requires a fusion reactor capable of maintaining fusion despite the continual siphoning of a substantial amount of plasma to provide combat thrust, then it needs to route that plasma to the magnetic nozzle assembly as quickly as possible to reduce the number and length of magnetic "pipes" required to move it around, oh and also now we want it to come in many different and undoubtedly suboptimal shapes.

The pipes melt. The plasma cools down far too quickly, usually by heating things we don't want heated to plasma-like temperatures. Any attempt at shrinking the reactor resulted in a reaction that died quickly once the plasma was siphoned to provide thrust.

We made some progress, though. We've managed to develop a working assembly to pipe plasma around, though the shorter the distance the better for all involved, and battle damage is a continuous risk, since unlike a hit to the reactor itself, a hit to a pipe won't stop the reaction and leave everything safe, it'll just keep spraying out fusion-temperature plasma until somebody or something notices what's up.

'SparkY' Tetris Another direct fusion drive capable of extremely high thrust, but requiring a very large fusion reactor (duh) and complex magnetic nozzle assembly. Now slightly more modular, theoretically. Several laboratories were harmed in the making of this modular fusion drive. Harmed quite spectacularly, in fact.

So we worked on refitting SparkY drives onto every single ship in our fleet. Apparently the idea of this process requiring a total rebuild wasn't quite communicated clearly, though the communique in question clearly states this to be the case. Furthermore the idea that it would principally be useful in propelling a "relatively light" vessel in proportion to the size of the drive also missed. Further furthermore the idea that maybe ITCs and Peithos do not, in fact, count as "light" vessels was missed in addition to all the other problems that were evidently missed.

We tried, though. The Peitho was first in the list and so we focused all our efforts on it to make this an achievable goal. The Peitho SparkY (AKA Pitiable Sparkplug) is a version of the Peitho that rips off the aft section composed of two whole Tokamaks, all gone. In its place we've built up a truly massive fusion reactor array and drive section. It does push the Peitho to Speed 3, though. The only downsides are the increased cost from the large fusion reactor array and a slight lack of armor on certain sections of the aft hull that were drastically changed by the refit. The gaps are filled with an ablative foam but perhaps they could use some better protection than this.

No other refits were even attempted because that would've been a silly idea.

Peitho SparkY Assembled with the new SparkY 2.0 functional direct fusion drive and with some cost overruns and maybe a hint of lacking protection, the Peitho SparkY is Speed 3 and retains the firepower and maneuverability of the original.
Cost: 10 SPPs

OK so update speed has obviously gotten worse and worse; I'm probably going to make surface combat progress much faster and space combat result in more damage in order to accelerate this.

Pending retaliation from the technate for the losses we've suffered, it is imperative to get our forces on the frontline refit and repaired.  As such, commissions have been issued for taking the Hephaestus from merely being an expensive idea, to a vessel to serve until the debt of it's development is paid.

Shipyards are tooled up and forces assembled as ITCs are scheduled to arrive in orbit.
Commissioned from one shipyard, the Hephaestus class support vessel, christened the "Never Give You Up" is put into service at last.  (4SPP)
Commissioned from another, an Endexi class vessel named "Blunt Object" is put into service.

"Never Give You Up," "Blunt Object," and "So Much For Subtlety" proceed to planet Charlie routing through Alpha, and regroup at the edge of the system, awaiting supplies, and looking threatening.

The transports arrive in orbit, and begin the loading of BMU-8 equipped with Trephines and Hammers, and taking on cargo containers of additional hammers to distribute to the forces fighting at F who lack the weaponry.  When loaded, the transports turn around and proceed to Alpha.

"No More Mr Nice Guy" is ordered to Charlie to seek repairs from the "Never Give You Up" when it arrives in the system.

The remaining Logos and Peitho are to remain in the system, and interdict forces that are equal in number and power.  If met by outnumbering forces, they are to keep distance.

*sigh*

So to summarize our turn thus far, we got a plasma cannon that we haven't installed on anything, and we STILL don't have speed 3 (except for a new version of the Peitho that might make it explode.)

So in terms of deployment, we dropped off our boys on F and our ITC's are almost back at the Hub.  Our only Peitho is holding the orbit with two obsolete Logos each with one foot in the grave.  We just made an Endeixi, but without SPD 3, it's two turns out from F.

On the upside, their magical-bullshit-aircraft-that-fight-in-space-but-don't-take-damage-like-a-spaceship were useful in slowing our invasion landings, but should be less effective now we've got beachheads.  (GM alluded to this five months ago.)  Also, our battle losses from long ago finally coughed up their SPP.  And our ITC's are finally home to load those idle 6 GPP.

That being said...

Quote from: Plan Finish It

Overall concept is to finish the ground push on F, to deny OPFOR its resources.

Peitho holds the line in orbit at F, while the two badly damaged and obsolete Logos withdraw C to A.  (We cannot afford to lose those 6 SPP for so many turns.)  The new Endexi pushes to C, staging for F.  Both ITC's return to Hub.  ITC-05 loads reinforcements and turns back around to A.  They are joined on the way out by a newly produced Endexi and a Hephaestus RV.  ITC-01-LIFT stands by at the Hub.

Given the 'emergence' of our adversaries Slaughterfields, our Emergent squadrons are costly deathtraps (6GPP total!).  Unfortunately, we don't have transports headed out there anytime soon.  As painful at it is, we should destroy them before our adversary does.  They'll be a loss, but better now, than later.

In terms of production, 9 SPP (of 10) are spent on an Endeixi and a Hephaestus RV.  5 GPP (of 6) are spent producing a new BMU-8 with new Trephines and Hammers.  (Finally using that Dozer!)  They'll also pack an additional set of Hammers for eventual delivery to BMU-2 on Foxtrot.

Endstate:

F: Peitho, with 3 BMU's on surface
E: 2 BMU's
D: 2 BMU's (with scrapped Emergents)
C: 2 Endexi and one Heph RV in transit to F
B: nothing
A: 2 badly damaged Logos enroute to Hub, 1 loaded ITC in transit to F
Hub: 1 ITC-LIFT standing by
(1SPP and 1GPP unspent)

Quote from: Design: 'Hawk' Air superiority fighter
Our past forays into air combat frames have been utter disappointments.  As the scrapped Emergents has evidenced.  While they had benefits, their overall weakness as we face down real airpower is a stunning reminder of the failure of that particular panel of designers.  We need something that can operate on the same or superior level in the same role.

The craft in question is a swept wing aircraft with 2 wing hardpoints and 1 belly hardpoint, as well as a chain railgun in the nose, expected to fire 20mm slugs at 1,000rpm.  The hardpoints could be wired in order to launch missile or bomb at air or ground targets.  Or utilized as external fuel tanks.

However, the entire airframe is built for maneuverability.  The hardpoints are of secondary consideration, and would come with covers to cut out any drag the exposed connectors may generate, minimal as it may be.  Internal oxygen tanks would provide oxidizer for the fuel, to allow operation in atmospheres without sufficient oxygen, and allow for hypersonic flight.
EDIT: Clarity edits made
EDIT2: nose cannon changes.  Credit to C5 for remembering, and credit to Kashyyk for making the original design.

Quote from: Delta Lofstrom Inquisition
We have given the Delta Lofstrom team plenty of time and funding to achieve their results, and all they have offered is abject failure. The odds of this happening naturally is 1.5%, and so command has mandated a full audit of activities. All personnel will be reviewed, decisions analysed and results scrutinised. We're not saying some of them have been compomised, just heavily implying it.

Once any negative assets have been removed, the team will no doubt complete this task with ease.

((Mechanically, this is another go at the Delta Lofstrom Loop, I just wanted something more interesting than "do it again but better"))
