Largely because I want to get something that'd let us get something a bit more exotic (and effective) than an ordinary, perfectly mundane rifle.

Glimmer Farms:

(Easy) 1 + 4 + 1 = 6

As it turns out, it isn't that hard to create 'Spirit Crystals'. Step one is to fill a tank with finished Spirit Brew. Step two is to drop in a 'seed' of already existing Spirit Crystal. Step three, seal the tank. Step four, trace squiggly symbols onto the tank and boil for precisely three point one four days. Step five: siphon away the Spirit Brew residue and remove a large, faintly blue crystal. We're still not sure what to do with the crystal...

Well, cutting cubes of the Spirit Crystal and dropping them into an alcoholic beverages reduces hangover and adds a hallucinogenic effect similar to the result of drinking pure Spirit Brew, but weaker. So that's an excellent use.

The one thing everyone's confused about is why the designer of this project named it... Farms. He must have been drunk at the time. Fairly normal around here.

Brew Master's Apron:

(Normal) 3 + 1 = 4

We've adapted and improved a protective garment into a proper uniform for our soldiers. A canvas jumpsuit with not one but two removable layers! A respirator facemask for protection from fumes and other gasses! Pouches for booze and ammunition! Unmentionables!

No indicators of rank whatsoever!

Probably not an issue.

Crystal Gem Power

By drinking a solution of diluted brew mixed with crystals, we hope to induce communication with these visions, and we are going to try and communicate with them.

Repost:

Firebottles

So we have a brew that catches fire now. Good enough. Now, let's gently boil it down to a low-density gel, and bottle it in a cylindrical flask with the catalyst added in before firing via a ball wrapped in brew-soluble coating.

Spirit Possession
We are now making bullets for our basic rifles and pistols out of Spirit Crystal instead of lead or iron or whatever we dug up. By carving specific symbols passed down from our ancestors, we can invoke those ancestors to guide the bullet's path, making a near-miss into a hit, and a hit into a guaranteed kill.

Further, the vengeful spirits of our fallen will affect the enemy hit by one of these suckers - if they don't die, they will be plagued by violent visions, but we are aiming to kill. A kill however, leaves a vessel empty, prime for possession by the spirits of our side. The corpse will usually rise after a couple of minutes, attacking the enemy from behind their lines, and will last until the crystal bullet fully disolves. Usually somewhere around half a day, we estimate.

Sprit Possession:

(Very Hard) 3 + 1 - 2 = 2

The good news is we now have exploding bullets. The bad news is they always explode right after they're created and we have no idea why.

Well, what can we learn from this?
Try for technology before magic? Or make it so Magic is less better understood before we make magic?

I'd like to learn more about our failure here, and this would seem to be the only way to do it.

Or in words similar to our GM's style of writing:
"No magic, study magic."
