Well, that stinks. Enchant the remainder of our metal (except the forge) into a set of small decorative pieces---little figurines and doorknobs and decorative stakes to top fences with and whatnot. That way we can spread them around innocuously about our little dwelling or wherever we may need to. Scatter the figurines around the cottage enchanted if possible to explode into flames on mental or vocal command. Keep the rings on us in case we need them.

Head into town and proceed to the castle. Enchant a ring to make people around us believe we are very trustworthy, and enchant another ring to make our plain robes appear to be normal apparel for a poor scribe. We'll then proceed direct to the castle and introduce ourselves as a trained scribe, who recently completed her apprenticeship and who wishes for a position suitable to her talents. Court scribe (keeps track of courtly business), note-taker, treasury administrator, whatever.


I guess we ought to take the GM's hint about not going off and hermiting our way to ultimate victory.

Separate from the above proposal, it also occurs to me that we can enchant people’s doorknobs, coins, and other such metal things that are likely to get handled often with innocuous psychological effects like the trustworthiness one on the ring, just by brushing past them.

You put your hands on your hips and smile a bit at the metal decorations you shaped from the iron objects you stole. They weren’t much to look at, but you never really had much of an opportunity to express your creative side. And very dangerous, since you imbued them with explosive potential. A darker part of you was pleased with that too.

Explosive enchantment learned

Eight rings in your pocket and two on your fingers, you teleport to the outskirts of the village. The sun was harsh and strong today, burning onto the backs of the farmers bent over their fields. You strode forward, exuding an aura of trustworthiness, and wearing the illusion of a minor scribes robes you saw scurrying around when you were Sealed. The farmers glanced at you for a bit. A few of the younger men gave half hearted waves and a quick smile before returning to work under the gaze of their elders. Their bodies are leaner than you expected from their yields. Perhaps they had a time of hardship recently.

Learned Illusion

You enter the village proper where there are women running errands back and forth, the smith arguing with a customer,and children at play. The voices are muted, however, and you don’t feel the same sense of joy and contentment that you felt around Applegate. A bulky guard, his gambeson stained with sweat and grease, swaggers up to you. He smiles and leers at you,

“Good morning miss, what brings you to Goldenfields? Yah got a man with you?”

You tersely reply, “ I am a scribe, recently trained, and am looking to find a position here at Goldenfields. Will you take me to your lord?”

The guard looks surprised but shrugs in agreement, “Sure, follow me.”

You follow the man up to the squat keep. In the yard around the keep a table was set up. Two men were brawling in front of the table, and perhaps another half dozen men lounging in the shade. To the side was a man chained to a whipping post, his back bloody and raw. The hatred in his eyes when his gaze met yours causes you to flinch slightly.

A potential champion, should you prove worthy of it.

What was . . .? Ahh, you recall the voice. Malenias. A low chuckle at the edge of your awareness confirms your suspicions.

The guard notices you jump and reassures you,  “ Oh don’t worry about him, miss, the boys were having a bit of fun with him since he stole all those tools a day ago.”



The guard walks up to the table and gestures to you, “Sir Brant, this scribe wishes to work under you.” You can feel the eyes that gaze at you and light laughter echoes around the yard. The lord Brant doesn’t rise from his seat and smirks at you.

“Now what brings a tart like you to my humble abode? We don’t have much need for scribblings but I’m sure we could keep you busy.” Loud laughter from his men follows his words.

You feel anger rise within you, but you tamp it down and open your mouth to see if you can convince this idiot of the worth of a scribe. . . but no words come out. Puzzling, you back refuses to bend in a bow.

Girl, you are now the daughter of the Titan of Authority. You bow to no one.

You blink. The plan was to gain his trust and work from the shadows, it is a good plan you soundlessly protest.

A quiet laugh reflects the laughter from the thugs around you now. Ahh our power is to rule and command, such that the world itself reflects our wishes. A power such as that could not submit to another without breaking. That was my curse, and how I am now a shadow. It is part of your curse now, though you may overcome it. But there will be a cost.

You feel her presence withdraw now, weaker than before. Her words had cost her, you felt. You turned your gaze to the smirking lord, whose smile turned ugly. You feel your power rumble inside you as you slip your hands into your pocket and into the rings. You aren’t sure what you are going to do. You could still fool them, you feel. But it could be the effort would be wasted on these fools.

Are they worth the cost?

What do you do?
A. Integrate yourself with them. You came this far, and while they seem to lack all appreciation for the work a scribe and administrator can do, maybe you can convince them otherwise. (25% experience)
B. Dominate their minds. They really aren’t worth the trouble of degrading yourself. Leaving you free to rule openly or from the back of the room while puppets dance to your tune. (100% experience)
C. Kill them. In all honesty they probably deserve it. You could move on to better grounds and the village would be better off probably, or you could stick around and help them out. (100% experience)
D. Teleport out. You are just not ready to deal with this today. (0% experience)

(So here is a glimpse into the experience system. You get experience for overcoming challenges. One of the drawbacks to having the Titan of Authority’s power is that it doesn’t like to submit.  Since you are still coming into your power you can overcome that resistance, but your power won’t grow as fast. If you keep determinedly deciding to bow and scrape before others, you can eliminate that curse but with the opportunity cost of not picking a different upgrade. Avoiding or bypassing challenges by teleporting or running away earn 50% to 0% experience. For example sneaking through a castle gets 50% of the value of killing everything inside, plus the full value of the objective. Running away will usually get zero. Twisting foes into your service or killing them gives you their full experience value. Completing objectives also rewards experience.

Never mind this. Switch that illusion to make us appear much more threatening and regal in a notably...well, Evil is such a rude word nowadays...morally flexible way.

Enchant a ring to freeze the guards in time (because we're just THAT COOL) and physically immobilize the lord with a telekinesis derivative. Kill any guards we can't freeze and that try to stop us---stop their hearts with an enchantment. We'll revive them later. If the citizenry behaves, anyway. Telepathically extract knowledge (this isn't an interrogation, this is us using our immense power of Authority to know everything our new subjects have ever done or learned) of what kind of person this lord is, how he treats his subjects, etc.

Learn why his peasants are starving and how many guards he has and how much contact this fiefdom has with heroes and how often we might see a hero in this part of the realm and if the lord of this castle has a liege-lord of his own and how they determined that that man was guilty for stealing. In short, bring ourselves up to speed on this lord's fiefdom and the world at large.

You can totally freeze people in time, however I see that as leaving them unable to be effected by outside forces, which would prevent telepathic interrogation. You might want a different form of immobilization in this case.

Also since you don’t have a telepathic enchantment yet, we could define it a bit more? Are you asking his mind questions that he is forced to answer, or are you extracting/ examining raw memories?

(This isn’t addressed specifically to Madman, as everyone can make suggestions and write ins. )

Or simply "vanish" a section of time, like they all nodded off at once and aren't aware of anything going on around them.

I suggest as a longer time plan of action, that we first dominate/take control of this administration, and while we are in control (pulling the strings from the shadows) we gain information of the current state of the world. When we have had to time get our bearings, we get rid of our current puppets and replace them in order to avoid any suspicion raised by this landholding suddenly being managed extremely well.

Nine targets. You smile tightly as you slip your hands into the pockets of your robes. You alter your illusion enchantment as your prepare a ring to freeze the men around you. The illusion grows taller, robes blackening as flames lick its edge. Your face grows cold and hard as marble as your eyes glows red. The men cry out in fear and the guard who escorted you in outright faints in fear.

Sir Brant stumbles over in his chair as you raise your hand. A wave of power washes away from you, freezing the thugs in time, faces terrified.

That … felt pretty good.

You walk over to the frozen lord, and release him. He continues with his momentum, falling hard on the ground and rolling away. He raises himself to his feet, a wild look in his eye as you gesture again and seize him in a telekinetic grab. He struggles against you, but cannot overcome the hold you have over his body. He can only tremble violently as you reach into his mind.

His mind is a confused mess, a jumble of thoughts and knowledge. You try to pick out useful information, but you don’t have enough experience yet to seize what you want. Asking Brant questions, though, brings those thoughts to the surface unwillingly.

He is Sir Brant, lord of the village of Goldenfield and vassal to Count Albert who is vassal to Duke Caldiwan who is vassal to King Gareth of the Kingdom of Duane. He is a knight, sworn through vows to bear arms for the Goddess Lustria whenever called upon. The knights work with the priests to ensure order is maintained throughout the land. All must worship the Goddess daily, and heavy sacrifices are made in her honor. This, he believes, strengthens her in the fight against the darkness. The nobles, knights and priests pay less in sacrifices due to the sacrifice of their service. They also are allowed to partake of the materials provided of the sacrifice, as the Goddess is empowered by the act itself.

The world is mostly peaceful, though there are occasional wars over inheritances that the nobles engage in to keep their skills sharp. Sir Brant served three years ago in one dispute locally, and there is one currently ongoing on the border with the Kingdom of Cenowas. But these are relatively civil affairs, with nobles being taken ransom and exchanges made. It's a game for them, you discover. The only ones to bleed are the peasants.

In Goldenfields itself, he is a petty tyrant. He keeps to the strictest taxes, which the Priest Yaras fervently endorses. They produce enough that he lives relatively comfortably with about a dozen men. The taxes are meant to be only used in wartime or when the goddess sends a directive, but discretion is left to the local enforcer.  This is enough to surmise that the peasants are lacking enough to fulfill all of their nutritional needs. Yaras the priest used his fiery words to encourage more and more sacrifice even as they grew thinner and he grew larger.

Heroes he hasn’t seen come through his village until two days ago when Lady Inglewine came investigating after Markos. He had told her about the Tomb of Albright and that he might have gone there. He had seen heros on campaign, however, numerous times.

And finally, the whipped man was Pellas. He had gone to war for Brant, and when he returned he found his parents dead. He lived with his sister for a time, and then he went away. When he returned he learned his sister disappeared. He blamed Brant for it, but Brant was there the night that Count Albert had visited and the pretty girl had refused him. Pellas grew sullen and reclusive, defying Brant whenever he could. When the tools were discovered missing, Brant took the opportunity to take care of this problem.

You ease away from Brant’s mind, and you ask one more question.

It was 300 some years ago when the Dark Lady Naomi was burned alive.

In blink in the daylight. The men still stand frozen in time, and Brant weeps as he floats in the air. You renew the enchantment on them all and walk to the man, Pellas, who watches you warily. You lay a hand on his bloody shoulder, and create a restorative enchantment. You watch as healing energies flow through his body, mending flesh. He gasps as you surmise that this healing is not a painless process. The process completes and he rests his head against the wood, exhausted. You give him a moment and then he looks into the eyes of your illusion.

“ You have given me more than the Goddess ever has. Thank you, truly, whoever you may be.”

Banishing the illusion of the terrifying Dark Lady, you give him a soft smile. “Call me Naomi.”

He gives a brief smile back, but his face hardens as he turns to the floating Sir Brant. He turns once again to look at you, and you see the fire in his eyes, “Give me him,” he points at Brant,  “And I will serve you with everything that I am and more.”

Learned Heal

What do you do?
A.Give him Brant, but tell him what really happened to his sister.
B.You got your own purposes for Brant, but tell him about the Count.
C. Refuse him outright. You don’t need another complication.

Now onto the Village, you got some ideas of how to improve things around here. How will you present yourself? And what do you do about the Priest?


A.Full Dark Lady.
Will terrify all villagers, but you can dominate them easily enough and they will come around once they see the benefits. Kill the Priest, not worth the trouble.

B.Behind Brant, he will have a change of heart due to his new advisor. Priest can be dominated or persuaded.

C. Rebel, you will be the adviser to Pellas who overthrew Brant. Kill or run out the priest.
Something else?

Now onto what you do for the town the next turn (Will last a week). You have about 240 units of Tier one objects to use, and a population of 117.

RESTORATIVE: Time to give back what was lost. Make and enchant rods that farmers can plant into the ground and the crops will grow back in a day. This will free up hands to work elsewhere. Enchant items that will slowly restore vitality that was lost to malnourishment. Improve housing and begin a flash education using enchantments that enhance memory. Find people of talent and empower them for further service.

MILITARY: Enchant the growing rods as well. The defenses were rather shoddy, and with free hands and your shaping enchantments you can bring walls up easily using local sources of stone. Set up an inner wall around the keep and an outer wall around the village itself. Have men who have military experience train as many hands you can spare, and give them enchantments that greatly give vitality. It may be painful, but it’ll give you strong and capable soldiers and a base of operations. Find local deposits of resources such as iron and other possible targets.

JUST LEAVE:


Write in: You can mix and match and come up with new ideas however you want, but indicate your priorities. Do you want to focus on making them happy future citizens or the beginnings of a revolutionary force? If you get critical successes where do you want them channeled? Also this turn will cover about a week, keep that in mind when coming up with actions.  Remember your administration skill gives you bonus for this sort of stuff!

(Sorry if I’m rushing through this bit, but I wanted to give you the chance to possibly run your own village for a bit, since that is what you created your character to be gifted in!
