"Of course. That was never the problem in my opinion. The problem is allowing ourselves a weakness by allowing mortal factors to influence the shards. Thii for example, that one of the star bearers would turn to the Chaotic in order to increase their power. If the Eldritch were to find this individual and supply them, then the bearer may be yet tempted to subvert or break the barrier of our brothers and sisters' creation. The shard may yet allow them a way to study the workings of the celestial breastworks and in time, overcome it. That is what I fear."
Ma Dong crafts and weaves, disassembling a few bullets from his ammopack and interlacing them with his own essence. From these, Ma Dong created carp.
Care are a species of highly-polymorphic animals that resemble mundane carp.
Carp are born as small aquatic fries connected to a sac of egg yolk and spend the first week of their lives feeding off this, before moving on to other planktons and macrophytes. They remain in this infant state for two months.
Further development is dependent on the phase of the moon, specifically the presence of the new or full moon.
If two months pass and the new moon occurs first, the carp begins metamorphosising into a carp-like eel. Over time, it develops into a carp-like salamander and then finally, a carp-like serpentine biped with four limbs. These include a pair of arms and legs. Measuring around 140cm tall and 60kg in weight, These 'adult' carp are scaled like reptiles but possess webbed tails, gills, -and in some populations- webbed digits. Many possess fins or fin-like crests, spines, whiskers or carp-like tails. Carp have a wide variety of scale tones and patterns, quite similar to real life carp. In some respect, they resemble a small oriental dragon. These carp are inherently disgusting to the taste and contain an incredibly effective neurotoxin poison (not venom) throughout their body. These carp usually posses a strong communal personality and a strong attachment to family. The adults are omnivoresCarp from the same water body, or section if said water body is large enough, oft form the nucleus of a community. Adult carp usually care for carp fry and the various polymorphs, treating them as children. Those that mature around the full moon are cared for to a lesser degree. To aid them, carp will often bring along animals to drink from the waters containing full moon carp. As new moon carp juveniles grow, they are adopted by carp families/clans. Some may be blood related to their new family, others not. Some communities may opt for communal rearing of children rather than adoption.
New moon carp have the ability to communicate with their Full Moon counterparts regardless of form. In general, new moon carp are known for intelligence and cunning. Carp breed externally as adults in a manner similar to other amphibians, releasing thousands of eggs as a result of breeding. These carp live to around 70 if disease or other factor does not strike them down. This includes their phases of metamorphosis.
New Moon Carp are also called Shuili.
Those carp that mature during the Full Moon do not metamorphosise the same way as their kin, but remain fry. They instead begin growing extremely hardy scales and bones, as well as a sharp needle-like tooth. These carp eventually begin waiting near the water's edge, attempting to be swallowed by drinking species. Being extremely small, this is not oft noticed. Those that are swallowed begin burrowing into the host, forming a cavity all the whole secreting anaesthesia; the host is not usually aware of the carp. After creating this cavity, the Caro's body begins disintegrating into a mass of fleshy hyphae, filling the cavity. In the process, the carp's neutral system is decentralized throughout the hyphae network, rather than being centralised in a brain. Utilising the nutrients of the host, the carp grows yet more of this mass, expanding throughout the body. The target of this growth is the creature's brain or equivalent. Upon locating it, two things can happen.
If sapient, the carp simply latches onto the brain, melding itself with the host. This massively improves the sapient's reflexes, cunning and intelligence. Over time, thoughts from the carp cross over into the host's, allowing for communication between them and the carp. By this point, the carp has been secreting a great deal of hormones that make the host desire to maintain and indeed, befriend the carp. The carp has no other effect on the host's mental faculties or personality. The carp, does not want the host to die and should it find the host unconscious and in danger, will take control of the body in order to protect them.
When the host is not sapient, then the carp will instead take direct control, imbuing it with the aforementioned reflexes, cunning and intelligence. Further, the host will begin developing carp-like features.
Regardless of host, the carp will eventually grow to entangle more of the host's organs. By doing so, the carp improves them or begins forming ancillary organs, aiding the host in these functions or adding new ones. Examples would be secondary hearts, compartmentalisation of stomachs (if necessary), more efficient livers, etc. Attempting to remove the carp at this point often results in the death of the host, as much of the host's organs are either carp or heavily modified by carp. Furthermore, carp hyphae has grown throughout the body, making total removal difficult. Should the host die however, the carp will take control of the body. Regardless of host state, full moon carp can carp breed by producing carp egg 'clones' which are released in bodies of water should the host find itself in one. They often release many thousands of these. The ensuing fry oft have features of the host creature. Hypothetically, full moon carp live as long as their host, and should they be able to take control of the body after the host dies, can live to be 150.
Additionally, these carp are fully capable of communicating with new moon carp, regardless of form. Mainly, this is done via the release of pheromones into the surrounding air/water
Those with sapient hosts live in the community of the host, oft being unknown to the greater community. Should the host expire, the carp will try usually try to remain and be useful to the community. Some may leave or join carp communities.
Those with nonsapient hosts usually join their local water body's community.
Full Moon Carp are also called Jinli.
If for whatever reason, neither a full moon or new moon appears at the end of a fry's initial life stage (or is at least not visible), several of the fries will begin coalescing and wrapping each other into a spherical mass. It is bio luminescent and non-sapient. This carp blob is known as a Muli. Muli have the single function of acting as a surrogate moon, changing colour and glow in order to imitate the phases of the moon. Muli are sterile.
