I actually got my maths wrong, and 6 players fighting each other once is only 15 games, not 30. So I would be happy to go up to 8 players in the league (28 matches). We'll see what the interest is!

I'm tempted to combine magikarp and caterpie, but I know that would not be fun to actually use.

You are saved, since neither of those is currently available as a starter. You'll have to trade RGU for Caterpie, and Magikarp is #129 so you'll have to buy it as a rare pokémon. Magikarp would actually be a pretty decent choice, though, since we're only looking at types and not stats or moves.

Also, keep in mind that since we're on Gen I, Steel, Dark and Fairy aren't a thing.

Type is the only thing, though rare pokemon like magikarps get you more fans. You can't use caterpie as there's already one in the game already, but you could use weedle if you wanted.

You have to pay for each half (as TricMagic just did).

Huh, that's weird. All the rest have transparent backdrops and come from the same site, so that might impact it for your browser.
